Ship Hull Protection System

#sacrificialanode #ICCP #hullprotection
Ship's hull corrosion is one of the biggest worries for seafarers as the vessel works in a highly corrosive environment, which may lead to structural failure and damage. Sacrificial Anode and Impressed Current Cathodic protection system or ICCP are popular ship hull protection system.
The seawater acts as an electrolyte and different types of metals used for the construction of ships make a perfect galvanic cell leading to the generation of corrosive current and aggravated corrosion of the ship parts.
This Video Explain how these ship hull protection system works and why Impressed current cathodic protection on ships is better than the sacrificial anode.

    Electron current doesn’t pass through the electrolyte, only metal ions dissolve in the sea water . Its a very important point and i hope that it gets confirmed by anyone because i started doubting my self

    You are correct, there is only chemical action occurring between the metal(s) and sea water, not electrical action.

    How we can check zinc plates and where we must put cathode anode in engine room bottom?

  • @drj9162
    @drj916223 күн бұрын

    The anode (e.g., Zn) is where oxidation occurs and the electrons produced are transferred to the hull (e.g., Fe), which is why the hull is called the protected cathode. Right? But what is being reduced? Fe in the hull? Doubtful. So, are the electrons are just being routed through the hull back to the "anode". I don't understand what is being reduced. Is the Zn2+ produced in the anode being reduced back to Zn? If so the the terminology leaves something to be desired since the cathode should be where some reduction is occuring.

    Is it okay to install the sacrificial anodes on already painted steel surface? Or do we need to grind the surface first before installation?

  • @JeremySteamsack

    You need to grind the surface before installing. Having a reliable electrical contact with low resistance is critical

    Nice One! Whether for this ICCP do we need a Electrolyte to present?? I am looking whether this process can be used in Trucks or auto mobiles to prevent corrosion??

    But sir control panel will measure only the corrosion current between the particular metal, here in our case plantinum and it will be more as compared to anode?? Then How the slightly the more current wil protect the anode??

    Fully understood how ICCP protects corrosion by keep the metal hull negatively charged (feeding electrons to it, correct me if wrong) but this only resolves between seawater and steel (cooling system and hull). Can't find a good explanation how this works against sea creatures growing/sticking on the hull. Is the impressed current strong enough to shock them off? Anybody?

  • @ivankukuljan7282

    No, ICCP is not used to prevent marine growth. This is done by means od anti-fouling paint on the ships hull. But for pipes that lead sea water througt metal pipes we use Marine Growth Prevention System so that the valves, pumps and inside of the pipes dont get plugged.
