-- PRESENTATION: SHINTO MUSO RYU JOJUTSU --
This school’s name can be pronounced Shinto Muso Ryu as well as Shindo Muso Ryu Jojutsu. It was founded by the famous Muso Gonnosuke Katsuyoshi at the beginning of the 17th century, after he studied for a long time to find a way to defeat the sword with a staff.
The specialty of that school is to use a combination of Tsuki (thrust), Harai (sweep) and Uchi (hit) techniques, using both sides of the staff equally. The movements are carried on continuously and should adapt to the opponent's movements and attacks naturally, as if the Jo was a part of the practitioner’s own body. That way, it becomes possible to knock down the opponent’s weapon.
Mr. Matsui Kenji, who is leading this demonstration, possesses a Japanese Menkyo of the Fukuoka line of the Shinto Muso Ryu, along with a Menkyo of Asayama Ichiden-ryu. He was a student of Takaji Shimizu and Ichizo Otofuji. He is also a scholar and author of several works on Shinto Muso Ryu’s history and lineage.

I would assume power is generated from the ground up The thrust of (what I assume is a quarter staff) we call spear strikes Going into a lower stance than your enemy enables you to get more power when thrusting into a upward position to the chin neck or chest Or to gain a better position angle wise

You will hear a hundred esoteric reasons for low stances. In reality, these deep stances Train a few things: a better understanding of Center and whether it is forward or back; it inadvertently strengthens the legs when training and allows for an unspoken understanding of where your power is derived from; It also teaches how to move your center from one stance or position to the next. Once all of this is understood, sometimes unconsciously, your body will move with the experience of the deep stance when you are fighting and moving in a more natural stance because of your body and mind's level of entrainment. All of this is something that is very lightly mentioned in martial arts books throughout history, but is rarely expounded on in the modern schools.
