Shingetsu - The Moonlit Soul (Yamato Choshi)
The Buddhist term 'Shingetsu' refers to the clarity of your kokoro, or mind, body, and spirit. This is played on a 2.9 Jinashi shakuhachi that I made.
This traditional piece (Shingetsu - Yamato Choshi) was composed and played by the wandering komuso monks of the Nara area. Like the birth of this song from Nara, I believe chat it is also symbolic of a beginning. The Yamato area is the birthplace of Japan, which in 2010 celebrated its 1300th Anniversary. Shingetsu is also a song representative of true self understanding and our place in this world around us. Similar to the Shingon Buddhist meditation on the moon, Gachi-rinkan, it is symbolic of a beginning.
This song is from my album "Mahoroba":

Your soulful music shimmers like moonbeams over water... impressive acoustics outdoors! Shadowy and melancholy all throughout. Loved it! I'm always delighted to have a new Shizen Style video to enjoy with my matcha...More music, please.

Hello from USA First time on your channel. Came thru you tube algorithm . The video that popped up on my screen was “ 5 Japanese life concepts for self improvement “ Very very informative video. I have always been in love with Japanese culture. There is so much to learn from them. Followed macrobiotic lifestyle. Always go to Japanese stores for grocery shopping. I will definitely binge watch all your videos. I don’t know which country you are in right now but I got the feeling that I could ask you anything about Japanese culture or Japan and you will be able to answer it. Few things I wanted to learn more about is container gardening which Japanese have in front of their homes. It looks so pretty. How do they keep the roads so clean . What is their daily routine of cleaning the area in front of their homes. Also I had heard that they make salt triangular mounds/ in front of their homes every week to ward off negative energy. Would like to know more about that.

Hello, Thank you for the message and I'm glad you are liking the channel. Let's see, many people realy do take care of the small space in front of their houses. I've seen people sweep in front every day, as well as pour water over the cement to cool it down throughout the day. The triangle salt mounds are a Shinto ritual that some people do to purify the space and ward off the bad spirits, like you said. You also see the sumo wrestlers tossing salt up in the air before a match, to ward off the negative energy. Salt is a purifying element.

Again, I was amazed by your talents! For a moment, I wasn't in my room... hard to express what I felt in english. In french I would say : "Le temps s'est arrêté" (time has stopped in a special zone of the mind) Since I heard you playing the shakuhachi, I've been listening to many other performances on youtube. I can recognize that you have your own unique style. You are so intense and soothing at the same time. Have you been playing this instrument for a long time??? The historic of this musical piece is also very interesting. Thanks for sharing that too. Was also touched by the images. Especially when the moon seem to be dancing on the waters...just beautiful! Can't wait to hear more of your music and buy your album "Mahoroba" (Please can you tell what it means?) Domo Arigato Joshua! Greetings from cold Québec!

Thank you so much. I've been playing for about 20 years now. Mahoroba refers to what we would call "a Paradise," but is also an old reference to the Nara prefecture. The song Shingetsu came from the Nara area and I used to live there so I feel a closeness to that area. I'm so glad you were open to the sounds and you allowed it to take you to a place of "calm awareness," or Zanshin.
