I say don’t stop the rambling tangents. Loving the banter. The Lumin is a bit rich for my circumstances, and no need right now as I recently bought the Cambridge MXN10, your review helped my decision. These are great products to bring an older system up to date. Roon rocks.

Thanks guys. I am a happy D3 owner. Just a tip: if you do not like the app, there is also Tidal connect that is very easy to use. I also use the d3 as a pre amp for my Marantz 40N in power amp mode and that works fine for me.

@@is3commander No, only compared it to the in- build streamer/DAC of the Marantz 40N. I wanted to get rid of HEOS, Roon-ready/Qoboz,/Tidal connect and in silver. Got it for testing a week from my dealer and was convinced by its SQ. :-). It is in a set with Spendor Classic 3/1s and it sounds musical and natural.

Actually, Auralic Altair G1.1 is without digital out - it is little bit confusing when it is marketed like Digital Audio Streamer, more appropriate would be DAC with streaming function, because it has bunch of digital inputs, whereas Lumin D3 has not.

Lumin has this funny design where the top plate covers up the binding post. Just wondering if it would get in the way of some of these chunky interconnect we can see sometimes? That said, I really like the clean Lumin overall aesthetic, even better, in the silver version. Cool review, thanks guys!

The space has been increased slightly in newer models - mostly around the power socket (as it's now inverted), but yes, the overhang is still in place.

Ah, HFR of blessed memory. I happened to have the July 89 issue on the couch beside me while watching the latest excellent Riff. A youthful Ivor Tiefenbrun on the front cover, proclaimed as "The Big Yin". Amusing to note that it was another three years before Ivor was considered to be worthy of an MBE, but HFR's then Assistant Editor is now a Knight of the Realm.

Noel Keywood told me a good story about (Sir) Ian Rankin. He said that when he was working with Chris Frankland on Review, one day Ian announced that he was "off to write a book", and so was leaving the mag. It would be fair to say that those in the office weren't too impressed, at the time, as I understand. But history proved them wrong...

Try the Lumin U2 Mini - same as the D3 but no dac and a host of digital outputs.

I think Chris Frankland's other record was Earl Klugh's Soda Fountain Shuffle. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I'm not long back from Portugal. The Lisbon branch of El Corte Ingles (roughly the Iberian equivalent of John Lewis) had the DMP A6 "Masters Edition" at 800 Euros. UK price is £1200. I was sorely tempted, but for post-Brexit complexities.

Had the A6 with the upgraded PSU, upgraded to D3. Eversolo sounds much cheaper than it is compared with the Lumin. As a streamer and/or streamer and DAC, didn't matter.

Btw, not that it matters much, but the 9028PRO is already a few years old. Maybe it's new to Lumin but it's far from new in the market. It has long been superseded in the ESS line.

Yes, it's not a new chip, but it's a departure from the D2 which used a Wolfson. Interestingly, our most award-winning player ever, the LUMIN P1 uses a pair of ES9028PRO DAC chips.

There's no DAC out? I thought I saw a BNC socket clearly labelled 'digital out' in the split second you showed the back of this thing. C'mon you chaps, you can do a bit better than this.

Looks like Tidal and Spotify are on the ropes according to reports online. I’ll stick with my physical media. Also the Lumin app is very temperamental constantly bring broken by updates.
