Great video, thank you for sharing. You know you've made it when a legendary company like Sega is paying you to play their games before official release. One question -- as someone who loves story and has never played the original (but meant to), when I play this, are the stories different enough to warrant two full playthroughs, or is it more of "vengeance story serves as an addition to" the main story like P4G / P5R? Put another way, if I just play the vengeance story (and not the original) does that set up for a worse overall experience with the game? Thanks!

@@Ronjonbify The stories are notably different, but the 'route' is similar (similar areas for the most part). It is worth playing through twice, but there are common features between the two stories, so for example you'll know what the trajectory of certain characters will be no matter what route you choose second. I don't really want to say more than though, spoilers weren't my intention for this vid.

Sounds like you're describing sometime similar to Tales of Xillia (the one with Jude and Milla), at least in terms of mechanics, although we're not talking dual protags here. Well, maybe we are, appreciate the no spoilers thanks for that. Anyway based on your thoughts I'll plan on playing it through twice, understand each playthrough is around 60-70 hours which to me honestly feels on the short side for a mainline Atlus game. Sincere thanks for the quick response and the continued good content!

Yeah, this is not a good long term business strategy. I'm waiting too. Which means less sales for new games on release -> which means lesser popularity and less earnings -> which can lead to no repackage like Royal or Vengeance down the line or even worse

All the QoL changes sound rad and fix most of the gripes I had when I played the original. Stoked to start playing today!

I just dislike it so much that Atlus has the habit of releasing a definitive edition in the same console lifespan for full price. I mean, I would've bought the extra content at a dlc price, but I already paid for most of the game so I don't feel like paying full price again. It's a shame really.

SMT may not be my kind of game, but even so, I still think that the Nahobinos hair looks fabulous. It is so long and pretty. I love it.

Regarding the resolution, other people are reporting they can use 4K and 1440p @ 120hz at least, so it shouldn't be anything with the game.

My monitor supports 4k 120hz, so it wasn't a compatibility issue. But there was a day 1 patch on release day, I wonder if the feature wasn't there when I played.

@@TheKisekiNut Yeah, could've been some specific software compatibility issue maybe. Happy to hear that they didn't drop the ball and released a poor 1080p@60fps port or something. :)

I played and beat one run through the vanilla version of the game on switch. I am so excited to play it again because it really captivated me and I was always telling people that it had amazing gameplay and cool atmosphere. I’m glad more people are getting a chance to play it now. It deserves it.

As a person who has other responsibilities to worry about, save anywhere is a greatly desired feature. Yes, I could just put the Switch in sleep mode if something comes up while playing, but saving cuts down on the chance of losing progress.

Even in the original release you could just teleport back with one button press and save. It wasn't hard to run back to where you were either

Fun thing i notice when i choose what story to follow, it felt straight up like a SMT 1 reference

Auto-battle was actually in the original SMT V too, and it's in most Megaten games, all it does in most games is have everyone just use their normal attack. It also speeds up animations too. Vengeance just also added an "Auto-skill" option where you can have all demons automatically target weaknesses if you know them.

Hi Nut. Like your videos. For the graphics settings, I think it may be tied to your output source because my PC is connected to my 4k tv and the setting for how high my graphics can go was also 4k.

@@misanthropicattackhelicopt4148 It's to make the game feel smoother when it can't reach high fps, so if a game runs at 30 fps then motion blur on actually is meant to "feel" better and in racing games in particular it adds a sense of realism / speed. I absolutely hate it but mostly because I game on PC and get 60 fps minimum and usually way higher. First setting I check on a brand new game is motion blur and I turn it off. I absolutely hate it lol. It feels disguisting and like you say makes me want to vomit! Hurts my head and eyes, it has to be turned off for me!

The feature to get a demon and if you do bit have space to be able to get it as soon as you have space for it is not a new feature though. It was in the vanilla game as well.

Yeah, I picked this up the other day, the steel book edition actually! Pretty keen to get stuck into this bonus story soon!

That was the plan, then I realized that there's a Konosuba game out for Switch, so I'll hold off on this.

Just got it on Ps5 love it so far! Definitely worth buying it again

@TheKisekiNut Hopefully you can help me out with this question I bought the deluxe edition and learned that it comes with dlc that makes spawn rates of certain enemies that give u more xp, gold, etc increase and was wondering should I turn off that dlc for first playthrough? Or maybe turn it on midgame instead of early on because some people said it kind of ruins the early game experience because u get way more of them than u normally would, so ur really overleveled.

@@originsource if you were never answered turn it off completely till your done with the story and use it to get to the super bosses cause grinding to lvl 99 is a pain

I don´t really understand what´s up with the two different story paths: is one just the original story and the Vengeance part is an alternative version? Or is it more like a final chapter? I haven´t played SMT V yet, working my way towards it, so does this mean I´m supposed to play this game twice, or can I jump directly in to the Vengeance part? Or are the two stories almost the same but some sort of "light" or "dark" version of the same story...? Please enlighten me! 🙂

First half is the same second half is totally different. Directors say to play Vengeance route first.

Thanks for the video. I’m currently deciding between this and Eiyuuden chronicles. This admittedly looks better but I already played the original (I know, brand new story but still I played a part of this already) and I feel like Eiyuuden chronicles will be rarer in the future while I can wait for a sale on this game. With how hyped this game is I imagine smt 5 vengeance will not be hard to find on sale in the future.

I recently completely SMT 3 my first play of the mainline series and omg it was such a pleasant experience very different from the spin off persona.

Best spin off is Devil Survivor. It’s like SMT Tactics. It’s actually even better than the main series. Play that if you enjoyed SMT.

@@corey2232devil survivor IS modern. Two games are remastered for the 3DS, which is just a generation ago, considering the n2dsxl came out in 2017.

I just picked this up and I am excited to finally play through it. I am going to play through the original story line before doing the new Vengeance story, but does anyone know how that works? Will I just have to start a new game for that story or can you do new game plus and then go down the Vengeance route?

You can do a NG+ run and choose your route again. NG+ will give you the option to start from scratch or carry over your levels/skills.

So as a brand new player to this series, should i just start off with the Vengeance storyline? Is there any point in playing the original as a first timer?

Both are fairly different from each other, but start with the Vengeance route I'd say.

Autobattle was in regular SMTV but it default to just everyone doing regular attacks with no way to change actions. In vengeance you can auto battle and I believe they gave the option to prioritize weaknesses if available so that way you don’t waste time whacking an enemy if they have a weakness to fire and you have agi in your skill list.

I don't remember seeing the auto battle feature at all in the original - but then again, I wasn't really looking for it. I don't see the point of auto battle in these games.

I intend to next month pre ordered Sparking zero and Visions of mana but SMT V: Venegence sounds like a W massively overhauled from switch cant wait pick it up on PS5 🔥🔥

I'm only getting this because I haven't done a run on hard when playing the original. Here's hoping for another banger like Shiva's track.

Very odd that 4k wasn't available for you. I am playing it on a 1080p display but forcing 4k 120fps for higher a dpi. Compared to most other J-RPGs on PC I am just glad there are options to boost the frame rate above 60fps. I had a weird issue where I couldn't run adaptive sync on my monitor as it was doubling the image which caused a horizontal line to move vertically through the screen, 1st game ever to do such. It hasn't even been a week and i am 30hrs into the game, the original is one of my favorites and I am just glad its more SMTV. The HD visuals really allow you to appreciate the demons and enviroments in the game. The water that spirals around Mermaid's rock is very mesmerzing, also noticing dettails on demons not easily viewable before is really cool. I own the PS5 version too, I might see how it compares soon for curosities sake.

I can hit 1440p and 4k on my version of the game on PC. If you have a 1080p monitor, of course you won't be able to hit that resolution, your monitor doesn't support it. If you're talking about texture res, etc, these settings can be changed via a .ini file inside the game's folder. I have no idea why they weren't included in the options menu whereas these options are usually there in Persona titles.

I wanted to get my hands on the original smt v for christmas, but I didn't get it, so maybe I'll have better luck this time

my main question i have is: does the canon of vengeance have the same requirements for TDE as the original SMTV

For a first playthrough, should i do the original path or the vengeance one, or doesn’t it matter?

It doesnt matter, but Vengeance have better story and more fleshed characters. And one more thing. Also if you clear Creation (True Neutral Ending) and import save to Vengeance you unlock special boss fight, and vice versa - if you clear Vengeance and import save to Creation you unlock another special boss fight.

So i can get this or trails through daybreak ?

I just got it today on switch and thankfully it read my base smt v with my fully leveled idun and cleopatra love those two

Switch gets the bonuses of the save carry over which is nice, but I'd rather have the performance boost.

Yeah the performance boost is nice but i just prefer playing on handheld mostly except for some games like warriors or action rpgs that really drops frames if not on powerful hardware

It is so damned good now. And in 4k it's just fully drool worthy

So strange that I couldn't get 4k on my playthrough. My monitor supports it, and I have no issue with other games. There has been a patch since my playthrough though, so I wonder.

Boss battles are insanely hard. Maybe it has a even easier mode you can put. Should make the enjoyment better for me on this game. It runs very smoothly and graphics top notch

I played it today for 6 hours. Great combat and soundtrack.

I really like it on the Switch so I probably won't buy it again. the new addition doesn't seem to add enough. But for people who have not played it yet, you should try it!

They added a fair amount. Like I said in the vid though, whether you feel those changes are worth dropping another £60 on it is your choice.

PC can definitely be played at 4k. Try switching to windowed mode & back into full screen

Was debating preordering this. But have such a backlog that I doubt I’d even play it immediately, so I decided to hold off. Game looks cool, but also cements to me the whole “wait for ultimate edition for Atlus games” narrative, which I’m definitely going to do for p3r

Vanilla SMT V had some of the most addictive gameplay I’ve ever experienced in a JRPG. I really want to revisit but it’s gonna have to wait for now. Will probs get it cheaper later in the year.

"New Testement Tablet" is a cheekie reference to how the "rare candy" items ae called gospels and Jesus "fulfilled" the prohpets of the Old Testements by rendering most of what they said void.

personally not a must play yet at least for me because it looks like my biggest issues wasnt fixed so ill be waiting for a save editor or a table that lets me edit miracles before i get vengeance lol after all theres no way in hell im waiting until the final area to get access to all my skill slots again i just despise feeling nerfed for 95% of a first run lol

So, question for our host (and anyone else): I'm a guy who has long been fascinated by the Shin Megami Tensei series. The only installment I've actually played, however, is Persona 5 original release... and I kinda hated it. Most things people praise about that game I bounced off completely, with the only aspect I truly enjoyed being the battle system. With that in mind, is it worth me trying to get into SMT 5? or am I better off saving my time and money?

Battle System (Press Turn) in SMT series is considered one of best in turn based jrpgs, so if you want play mostly for gameplay, SMT V Vengeance is game for you.

2 Endings like SMT IV Apocalypse, one route where you side with Quaditsu (new Chaos), and one route when you side with Mastema (new Law)

I am excited for this, but I will have to wait to buy it. The original came out at the wrong time for me: I had too much going on in my life, reviewers were harsh on the incomplete story and there were other games I preferred to play. While its great that a more complete version has come, I'm still not in the best state financially or mentally to play a fully priced 40+ hours game.

I never played the original, I loved persona 5 royal, couldn’t get into persona 3 at all, does smt v take 20+ hours for the story to actually begin?

No, but it's much more gameplay focused than Persona. The battling, exploration & much more serious tone tend to turn off a lot of Persona fans. But if you think you'd like Persona without the social features & way more depth in terms of demon/skill customization, then you should enjoy it.

Just go through Vengeance, the 'route' of the stories is mostly the same. It's mainly the events that are different.

The PC version definitely supports 4K.

I have been playing for 3 hours and game is nice but I'm getting tired of that sand area. I expected something like Persona game where I can swap between two worlds increasing bonds etc. I hope that there will be different areas later cause I cannot imagine doing all stuff over and over on the desert for the entire game.

What is the point of this comment? Show how bitter and ignorant you are? "I didn't finish the original and I won't buy it again for some QoL fixes!" First of: Okay? Good for you? what are you doing here in the first place then? and Second, its not just "some QoL fixes" its literally an extra 80 hours campaign with a new story, characters, bosses and villains. Only reason they didn't call it SMT6 is because the game still uses the base games characters and locations. Had they change that too you can bet they would be calling it SMT6.

My biggest Problem with Shin Megamin Tensei V was the Genocide Ending. It makes zero Sense.

I get that Sega asked you to talk about the game, but for me it's a solid NO, because of the woke agenda pushed on it and the gender fluid style of the main character.
