Shimoda Designs Explorer V2 Full Review! The best adventure camera bag out there?

The Shimoda Designs Explorer V2 is hands down one of the best adventure camera bags I have ever used. Loaded with great organization this bag allows you to have a spot for everything.
Depending on the size you can carry all your camera gear or breakdown the internal walls and use it as an overnight or extended travel bag! With side access into the camera cube on one side and a place for ND filters and smaller items on the other even the outside has tons of organization.
The harness system on this bag is amazing and incredibly comfortable no matter the occasion. With the option for hip belts you can take this bag on even longer hikes without getting the discomfort on your shoulders or back.
Everything about this bag is absolutely phenomenal and I can’t recommend it enough!

Hey Odie - great video! Truly helpful, thank you so very much. Just ordered the 30, a little worried it will be too big, but we'll see. Is there a water port for a bladder? I've seen conflicting information

Thanks for the detailed review. I'm still doing some research on a good hiking camera bag. Is there a way to store trekking poles on one of the straps?

Cool review. First time of seeing Explore 25 broken down. I got the 30. I’m a tad concerned because I like a small backpack setup, but my 22l lowepro hatchback is just a tad too small. But plan to buy both and return the one that doesn’t work for me. Looks like a solid bag. Nice job.

Great review, thank you ! Would love to get this bag. I currently own the Wandrd Duo and the original provoke. They are just not comfortable enough in the shoulder straps for long hiking trips. Looking for a comfortable and versatile backpack to get at some point, this one seems great, It's just a big investment that as a full time student I can't really make right now. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a black Friday deal to happen to make the jump!

Thanks for your review of this bag. Helped me make a decision on which one to grab. One question I have is which colorblind glasses do you use? How do you rate them? Tried searching your channel and didn’t see a video for them but maybe I missed it.

good review Odie, but you stated you had to open the back to get to the laptop but the top zip that allows lap top access(unless the 25 doesn't allow, I have the 35).

Can you by any chance fit in the Peak Design Medium cube in the same space of Shimoda's insert on the Explore V2 25? (I know its going to be a bit tight but wanted to confirm that!)

I'm doing research for my GFX system. Would the 30L version be able to hold the GFX and 3 lenses? Am I able to use the quick access with a larger DSLR camera?

This is the exact review I was looking for, thank you! I have the 15'' MacBook pro also, but really prefer the 25L explorer over the 30L. Do you see any problem with getting the 25L other than it being a tight fit in the laptop sleeve?

  • @OdieMatthews

Honestly that’s the only downside in my opinion. The 25L is damn near perfect besides the laptop sleeve.

The Laptop compartment is a deal breaker. Great video and it looks like a nice bag. But I use a 16” M1 MBP. I feel like any good camera bag should also be a tech bag so we can use it for excursions and work. Recommend the LowerPro Protactic 450

Got the green 25l, the pack is really something else, especially for the Kickstarter price. Before the campain went live I bought the prvke 21L and now I'll probably sell it. The quality of the shimoda is just on another level, the camera cube is miles ahead, the overall usability is simply stellar. Using the prkve I realized how much of a pain the rolltop is, I always access my stuff from the back panel, also I'm not sure if having all the weight connected to the main zip is a good idea in the long run. One of the highlight of the shimoda for me is the metal frame, it really helps when carrying a lot of stuff, I'm surprised that the weight of the pack without the cube is the same as the wandrd. I must admit that I still like the prvke for it's minimal design but I don't see myself choosing it over the shimoda in any use case. Still, there are a few thing I don't like about the Explore: - the side tripod/water bottle pockets, kinda messy, I would have liked some mesh webbing or something similar - lack of a small quick access pocket to put stuff like wallet and keys (something like the prkve has on the top) - shoulder straps too bulky, I also got the women straps that are much more streamlined, IMHO better for daily carry. - I prefer the hip belt system used in the prvke - my 13" MB pro is really tight in the pack panel, ther's also space to carry in in the front tho Will you still use you wandrd bags? Just curious :D

I will still use my Wandrd Lite for short camera trips where I don’t need as much but honestly for the most part this will most likely be my go to. I’ll see if anything changes when I get the PM Nomatic everyday camera bag though.

I'm also coming from the PRVKE. I will say disagree about the roll top. I definitely didn't love it at first, but after realizing I had room to remove layers in the airport/hiking etc. and expand my pack's capacity, I realized I appreciated that feature more than I thought I would. I definitely don't think it's very comfortable to carry though, and I agree about all the stress on the back zipper. I'm excited to try out the explore, but a little nervous that I'll actually prefer the PRVKE now that I'm used to it simply for the laptop sleeve, roll top, and water bottle pocket. Also that key pocket and hidden passport pocket are GREAT features too. Do either of you guys have anything to add now that you've been using the explore for longer?

@@Thedogofdoom1997 Hey Nick! About the roll top; you are definitely right, it's very handy, it's just that I don't like the accessibility of it in the Prvke, Shimoda also have a roll top line and they have an extra zip that let you access the top compartment without unrolling everything. I never really loved the Prvke so it's easy for me to say that I still prefer the Explore v2, imho it feels like the Wandrd is a bag that you have to adapt to, the Shimoda on the other hand is the opposite. I also bought a second Shimoda pack in the last couple weeks, the Action x30, on paper they are similar in size but the x30 can get to almost 40L with the rolltop. The Wandrd is a nice looking bag but the amount o thinking behind it, to me, was not that much. Stuff like black interiors, the flimsy way to get the camera cube in place, the kinda useless giant pocket in the front, the super small pocket on the side, the backpack top heaviness when full etc... The Shimoda is the opposite, every zip, pocket, buckle, everything has it's place and a specific reason to be there.

I believe you could but only one could use the laptop sleeve. The other would have to find a safe place somewhere else in the pack.

I love my 25L but if you’re going to try and make it a minimal travel bag with camera gear then 30L is the best option. As for giveaways hopefully soon. Next milestone I’m hoping to do a giveaway.
