Thank you for the demo. I decided to get Valhalla cause I detest the circle of sales that is going on in the DSP world with up to 99% off at times. It is just silly and has lead us into a black hole where you get fooled if you buy anything that is not on a huge discount sale. Valhallas policy is sane. "We feel that $50 is a fair price for the plugin. In essence, the plugins are on sale, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We don’t play games with the prices." /Valhalla homepage

Thanks for the review John. It perfectly answered my current question about the Eventide. Our generation will forever be addicted to that Lanois/Eno/Gabriel soundscape. It was like a never heard before heaven on earth that made our imaginations soar. Heck to a great degree Sean’s passionate mission was sparked by this same reverberant nirvana at the time. And yeah like you, Valhalla makes my imagination soar like nothing else. Eventide can’t compare here. BUT thanks to your review I’m getting it for sure as well. Valhalla Shimmer is the kind of vast backend soundscape you have to build a mix on. It often starts as the catalyst for a sound or composition for me, shimmerverb is clearly less vast and weighty through its absent bloom. But it is exactly this that makes it a better choice if you need shimmer well into a mix and you want it to sit within where your faders are already at. It is less of a carpet and more of a sprinkle if you know what I mean. IMHO Blackhole is more down the same esthetics as Sean’s shimmer than their latest release. My favorite Eventide verb is Stereo Room 2016. 😳 Now that thing just sits in a mix like nothing else I have. Thanks again for your time!🙏🏻 Best, Peter

nice job and especially a big thank you to whoever called out Tritek plugins. As a longtime Eventide H3000 D/SE owner, its great to see a new generation of plugins compete with the established masters. There is obviously no right or wrong here for any of these plugins, its all to taste for whatever you are working on. Thanks for making this cool comparison!

Valhalla Shimmer was partially modeled after the old AMS DMX 15-80, which has a cascading architecture that "blooms" in a very distinct way. Not sure exactly what's going on under the hood, but Sean tells me the diffusion network in Valhalla Shimmer is extraordinarily sophisticated. As far as I can tell, no other shimmer effect plugin has matched this enormously diffuse sound. Other shimmerverbs sound shrill and the pitch shifting is too sudden.

I think modulation (mod rate/mod depth on the Valhalla one) plays a big part in that lush sound. The omission of which can result in a bit of a shrieky sound, especially within the higher registers.

As a huge Valhalla fan, I have found that Shimmerverb is a great addition...more control over certain parameters & the decay option is a great insight, perfect for sound design. I own both, plenty of differences & equally excellent.

I’d have liked to see Tritik Irid included in this comparison as well. I compared it with Valhalla Shimmer a month or so ago and ended up preferring (and buying) Irid.

I have both. my opinion, for me each one has its own character, they sound different (in a good way) and generate different results, it all depends on what the sound and music require at a particular moment.

I was really torn between the two. I love Valhalla and I prefer their shimmer for how huge and lush and sweet it is, but even more for how organically it grows out of the dry signal. Eventide by comparison feels more like lucre added on top, a bit disconnected from the source. But I do prefer Eventide's features, esp. the two pitch shifting lines and being able to crank them up or down by 24 semitones. And, honestly, Valhalla's absence of presets and even of a bypass button makes for a somewhat rough UI. But it does sound so thick and lovely! Then I thought, maybe much of the Valhalla's superiority lies in its awesome diffusion algorithm? So I put Valhalla Delay after Eventide ShimmerVerb, both 100% wet, used no delay but 100% diffusion in the Quartz mode, and... omg, I died and went to heaven. Seems to give the best of both worlds, and I think this combination sounds even more awesome than either of the shimmer plugins solo.

First paragraph: I am 100% with you. I think Eventide nailed it with this format (the overall experience and the awesome "shift strip") for the _Blackhole,_ but not the ShimmerVerb. Valhalla's has got something more and it's really in their DSP. I shit you not but IIRC on a forum (KVR?) the guy from Valhalla or at least a knowledgeable dude said that VintageVerb is closer to the Alesis Midiverb (classic techno/IDM reverb that's lush but very collected), while the Shimmer is closer to the Quadraverb (terrifyingly lush) in nature. Second paragraph: the double reverb trick is apparently actually a thing, there's a Hainbach video where he puts two Quadraverbs in succession and it's fucking ace. It elevates classic cheesy subtractive synthlines to very serious stuff.

Been using Valhalla for years and it is undoubtably the king of Shimmerverbs, tried the Eventide ( I use Blackhole all the time ) and TBH not overwhelmed by it. Sometimes with these one off algo plugins they dumb it down too much.

I LOOOURVE Eventide and have done for three decades but the Valhalla sounds better. You can hear the Eventide works totally differently under the bonnet though, they use FFT based maths while the Valhalla doesn't and its more grainy.

When Valhalla released Shimmer, I was really shocked about what is possible today for only 50 bucks. This is a no brainer, all Valhalla plugins are. On the other hand, the instant cinematic sound from Valhalla Shimmer is nothing special to anyone who has ever worked with Eventide hardware, beginning with the Orville in the year 2001 up to today's flagship H9000. There were dozens of preset algorithms that sounded like this (and better, because some fine-tuning modules like band-dependent compressors were engaged in most cases) already in the Orville, and a lot of custom VSIG files with such effects; not to mention the crazy power of the H9000. Eventide has not released any plugin that is as complete as Valhalla Shimmer for a native platform yet. I understand that. But if you want to stand out, Shimmer won't help long. You cannot not tweak it anywhere near to what you can do with the "real" Eventide stuff. Admittedly, though I one some real stuff, Shimmer is often a "first-in" solution, and sometimes makes it to the release. Damn I should start making videos to demonstrate what I mean :) And if you want to make your own Shimmer, take a look here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/g5aHpaiEfJu3ltY.html. Nice.

I find them both to be very different. At first I thought it was a mistake that Eventide didn't study and try to improve on ValhallaShimmer - but the more I've thought about it, I think they tried to made a different less intense type of shimmer reverb so that you could have both.

Just demoed both. Vallhala by far wins. More options, more control, more lush sounds. Eventide, sorry is very limited in comparison. Valhalla wins. If you want to have one get V. Eventide is different sounding, cool as well but you will get more out off V.

Obviously, this type of reverb isn’t intended to provide a realistic ambience - they’re special effects that change the texture and character of the sounds that “inhabit” them. For me, Valhalla’s king of that hill.
