The bearings are size 3/32” There are 26 of them in each pedal. So a set of 52 is needed to change them all out. You can buy them at Condor Cycles, they’ll order them in for you. I paid £15 ish for 104 ball bearings. Enough for two pairs of pedals. You could buy a new tube of the Shimano premium grease (the yellow one) or a good waterproof grease or paste at the same time. Regular servicing of my pedals has eliminated all sorts of squeaks and noises I used to have. Plus, these pedals are £200 a pair now, it’s well worth looking after them.

Nice in-depth video. I’ve always just take the pedal body off. Filled it with new grease. Then as you screw the axle back in it forces the new grease in pushing the old out. Repeat a few times until it’s consistently new grease being expelled and job done. ok it’s a little messy and you waste a little grease but it’s easy and works well!

Useful tip about magnetic screwdriver for the bearings. Another option which works v well is the cap from a bic crystal pen - a dab of grease on the end of the clip bit and it works beautifully for picking up bearings (i.e. using the cap bit as the handle). Like your videos - keep up the good work.

When I opened mine I was absolutely floored. Whoever at Shimano OK'd a design with a completely open ball bearing mechanism where you can easily lose every single one of them when you take it apart had zero care for serviceability whatsoever haha

Ball bearing, bearing, ball. Are they different or the same things? The rest is useful and clear. Thanks.

Thorough guide, thank you! I've experienced a problem with lateral play with PD-M540 pedals. I found out that the axle guide (Y45E98040) contains two small sleeve bearings which were worn. I think it's the same construction with other Shimano pedals. Problem is you can't replace these bearing, if you're lucky you'll get the axle guides separately but mostly you'll need to replace the full axle assembly. Technically it wouldn't be a problem to replace the sleeve bearings but where to get those?

The play is sometimes not from the bearing assembly it comes from the expanded white plastic ring sleeve collar that’s on the main section closer to the crankset pedal mount that’s why you get play on the crank side even though the pedal is properly assembled on the ball bearing section.

Extra tip... A touch of epoxy layered on the front lip of the pedal prevents the wear of unclipping on the pedal body.

Any idea on how to fix a broken tension spring on these pedals?

As a rule of thumb, after how many miles do shimano bearings need servicing ? I have durace 9100 pedals.

Hi, i´ve tried this method on my R8000 Ultegra pedals. I have a problem that when i put new grease inside, the pedal spins extremely rough. When the spindle is out, it spins nice and smooth (tried adjust the freeplay and nothing changed). When the spindle is back in the pedal it spins extremely rough almost hard to turn. I did not find anything similar on the internet, do you have any tips? Btw the pedals were fine before this happened, just spinned a bit faster.. Using Juice Lubes bearing juice grease. (PD-R500 pedals did this method and works lovely)..

You're most likely feeling the tension from the new grease applied.

Hi, Are the axles interchangeable between the dura ace and ultegra pedals? I’m planning to buy a dura ace pedals but i can’t find one with extra 4mm. So i will just swap my 4mm axles from my worn ultegra to the new dura ace shell. Thanks

Look pedals don't feel as serviceable. I like the fact I can take a Shimano pedal apart completely (excluding anything on the pedal body).
