Shimano Deore 11-Speed Shifter Cable Pull
Ғылым және технология
Shimano's Deore SL-M5100 11-speed shifter is one of their mountain bike shifters. In this video, I'm going to measure the cable pull of this shifter and determine the pull ratio of compatible 11-speed derailleurs.

Excellent measurements! I've done an identical test on my deore 11 speed shifter and found an avarage cable pull of 3.45 to 3.5 mm for the 2 measurements series I did. I was using a very old 50mm travel dial gauge I had 'lying' around and it was a bit sticky so there are some errors in between the measurments. I have also done some measurements on the deraileur travel, but they were quite a bit more tricky. Although the derailleur I used was quite new, what I observed was that the movement of the derailleur depended in part on the chain line. In the highest and lowest gears the chain is not travelling in a straight line to the front chain ring (i used a 1 by setup) and this actually works a against the cable pull. So the larger pull at the both ends will to a certain extent counteract this restriction. (it was a new chain I used with very little sideways flex). The reason I did this was to design a cable pull adapter which would allow me to use a drop bar ultegra 11 speed shifter with the deore derailleur which would allow me to run a 11 to 46 MTB cassette. I had one of these a while ago but it didn't work reliably enough so I drop that idea at the time but I am now back at this project. In the meantime I am using a flat handle bar with the deore shifter, but would like to get back to the drop handle bars on account of the winds here in scotland. I have also done the cable pull for a 11 speed ultegra 6800 and found an avarage cable pull of 2.47 and 2.51 mm for the 2 measurements I did. Excllent work!

Thank you! Regarding derailleurs, it's really tricky to measure them since the jockey wheel is moving all around in 3 dimensions. Good luck with your cable pull adapter project! I know J-Tek has produced a lot of them, but I also wonder if it's possible to 3D print one. If you want to go straight to indexed 11-speed Deore, you could try Microshift XLE drop-bar shifters. You're measurements for Ultegra 6800 line up with my measurements for ST-R8020. Good work!

@@boothsbikeprojects I totaly agree with your commnt on derailleur measurements. They are tricky to perform reliably with gauges, but I was able to use a high precision 3D scanning system to do the task. The reason why I have to design my own "j-tek" typeadaptor is that my fram has internal cable routing and with the deore derailleur there is VERY , very limited space between the point where the shifter cable emerges from the chainstay and where it goes into the derailuer adjuster. Even for normal operation I hade to remove the adjuster barrel to get an acceoptable near 90 degree curve in the 45mm long jacket . PS I will have a look at the microshift XLE shifters
Can you do a Deore 10 speed hyperglide shifter, I have Linkglide 10s cassette with 10s hyperglide shifter and derailleur, and it works, I am guessing the pull ratio, cable pull and cog pitch are very close.

@@rafailloparev2070 For me, I needed I-Spec EV (not available in CUES) for my SLX brakes, I have SL-M4100 I-Spec EV (10s) Shifter + M5100 RD (11s) Derailleurs +11-48T 10s LG Cassette + 11s LG Chain, works perfectly.
