Shimano Auto Shift - How Auto Shift Works In Reality

Спорт

The new Shimano Auto Shift and Free Shift systems are potentially some of the most ground-breaking tech in the mountain bike world in recent memory - but how do they work when it counts in the real world? Steve Jones took to the hills around Riva del Garda to put the system through its paces.

    A system like that is reactive whereas a good rider is proactive. Good for noobs I guess. The one feature that genuinely looks useful is the ability to shift while keeping the pedals level. This could be handy if you are going downhill through a gnarly section and you know that there is a punchy climb coming up, you could shift down, ready for the climb without having to risk clipping your pedals.

    Why does shifting under load matter? The tension on the chain is on the top between the chain ring and the first few teeth on the sprocket. Where the chain is changing gears from the derailer, there is actually not much tension at all

    Linear progression is one thing where a semi-smart power ratio dilemma can be solved easily. However, the instantaneous progression over obstacles is quite a different story. If you can have both running simultaneously, using both modes, or all 3-simultaneously. So manual and terrain settings might make it worthwhile. If he said it’s possible, I didn’t hear that.

    I tried one yesterday and, while I liked it a lot in manual mode, I was less than happy about its gear decisions in A1. On a decent gravel road I went from a nice downhill gradient around a curve to a similar uphill. The A1 setting kept me in 9th gear struggling uphill where I would have expected 4th or even 3d gear. I kept waiting for it to shift and finally went manual to 3d. If the rain lets up I'll give it another go today.

    I can see the autoshift and freeshift being useful, especially on commuter and cargo bike applications. Not sure autoshift is something I would like on an eMTB though. I upgraded my eMTB to SRAM Transmission and shifting under load has been great feature when I shift late. Hoping to see a more robust/waterproof and serviceable Shimano EPxxx series motor in the future. If not here's hoping aftermarket motors designed to fit Shimano motor mounts become a thing. C'mon Bosch, get it done! :-)

    Rode a cargo bike Urban Arrow with auto shifting (not shimano) in my past job, it works really smooth, but I miss the sound of my rapid fire shifters. Gearboxes excite me and I want to try them and I'm excited to see them evolve in the future, but the biggest turn off is the current inability to shift under load, this is the greatest weakness for gearboxes on emtbs when even if you are currently in the right gear to climb, your angle and traction constantly changes on a challenging climb and you're left having to cut power to shift. Sounds extremely complicated to make autoshift work with a gearbox

    How is shifting under full load going to prolong your drive chain? If it decides to shift based on load then its always shifting loaded. Im not sure, looked and sounded cleaner when you shifted manually before the climb

    Noisy shifts... but if the chain and cassette are designed to take that extra abuse without shortening their life then it seems like a great idea. Now we just need Shimano and Sram to collaborate and combine linkglide and the new derailleur mounting system into an industry standard... probability wishfull thinking 😂

    The new system was designed to withstand shifting under load - they specifically designed the chain and tooth profiles to withstand it, which in turn allows a system like Auto Shift to work.

    Road bikes, smooth riding, single track and chill stuff, this is probably a good system, but truthfully, absolutely no way do I want a computer making decisions like this for me when IT cannot see the terrain I am riding, it cannot compensate for sudden terrain changes and personal ride adjustments - I believe this will do a few things - give uneducated shifting based people more excuses to not understand active shifting and just snap chains and cog teeth, and never actually teach them anything, make riders even lazier and just not actively think about what they're doing - I love innovative Analogue AND E-MTB tech, but this for me is too far, integrated gearboxes, Yes, Automated smart gear changing based on ride style, nope, On Yer Bike Pal!! :D good video tho Steve :)

  • @petef15
    @petef15 Жыл бұрын

    Only a good idea if they implement a continuous gear system. You really don't want the gears shifting without warning under load. Plus it's an unnecessary strain on the drivetrain.
