Shiloh Sharps 1874 Quigley in 45-110 an hour of your life you will never get back

Спорт

This is all the finer points of the rifle, questions I had, things I learned.
if you are interested in buying a rifle from Shiloh I highly recommend buying it through Bill Goodman www.shiloh-ballard.com/.
he charges a fee and gives you a prepaid for spot in line. save years in the wait time.
Brass is Norma 45 basic sized and cut to actual chamber length.
Bullet mould is can be found here www.buffaloarms.com/446-diame...
Patching paper can be found here www.draftingsuppliesdew.com/s...
Or here www.draftingsuppliesdew.com/s...
Patching paper notes. Most recommend 9# onion skin paper. well that's hard to find. The Seth Cole 55W is 8# and is just under .002" I've never used it so i don't have a dimension. The Seth Cole 55Y is 7# and measures .0012" and yes I used a Mitutoyo 50 millionths micrometer. On a .446" bullet this calculates to be .4508" but due to wet patching, stretching of the paper and shrinkage upon drying the bullets measure .4495"-.4498" which is perfect. Patching to bore is the best solution for a long range load in a 45-110 powder compression is minimal as you can seat the bullet anywhere you like since you are not worried about the lands preventing you from seating long.

    When I ordered my 30-inch heavy barrel 45-70 Hartford Model I made sure to get the shotgun butt-plate. It's great fun to shoot, especially with black powder loads. I used an Axtell midrange rear sight originally, but I eventually switched to a Left-Hand Kelly Soule. I waited 5 years to get mine (way back in 1997!)

    For $6,000, I could easily buy some hyper-acurate super precision 338 Lapua Magnum that would absolutely be objectively superior to this gun in virtually every measurable way. However, I would definitely rather have a custom-made Shiloh because it's subjectively superior in virtually every measurable way.

    I have built better rifles for less that are more accurate, more forgiving to the shoulder and cheaper to load for. That was not the point of this rifle. But I get your point. Yeah if this was my only long range rifle i'd be pretty stupid for buying it. But since I own three precision long range rifles this thing is a novelty to shoot

    @@SudsyMedusa53 I guess that would be a subjective opinion of what one considers to be better. This is stepping back in time and accomplishing hits that are tough to make with todays modern day scoped rifles. Billy Dixon knocked an Indian off his horse at 1538 yards on June 27th 1874, with I believe what was a 50/90 sharps he supposedly borrowed from Bat Masterson with vernier sights, that was later marked off for distance by the U.S. Army. Even Billy later on considered it a scratch shot, but it goes to show what these rifles can accomplish in the hands of a marksman. Again, this rifle is a piece of history you can hold in your hands that is so well made you can take parts from this rifle and put them on a circa 1874 Sharps and they will fit perfectly. Pretty sure I can comfortably say that Shiloh Sharps is unrivaled by anyone in the world when it comes to fit, finish, and accuracy these historical buffalo rifles. Although Winchester gets the credit for it, Sharps rifles cleared the way for Winchester to be able to claim to be the rifle than won the west. As a side note, this also where the term Sharpshooter derived from.. Sorry, didn't mean to be so long winded, and certainly intended no disrespect to your comments. I received my custom ordered 45/70 from Shiloh just a week or so ago and it truly is a magnificent piece of artisanal old world craftsmanship combined with todays metallurgy and machining. I doubt that I'll be up to shooting to it's potential for quite some time...if ever!

Pewter nose cap. The other is a Montana Rough Rider, 34" heavy barrel, semi fancy wood stock, color case harden steel shotgun butt stock, polished blued screws, pewter nose cap, hooded front site, and a longrange vernier rear site. I am a craftsman who prefers working wood and metal. The old guns are precisely that. I have made 1874s in the past from scratch. When you add up the machine work and fitment work, 6000 dollars is a steal. The receiver is insane complex in terms of all the rotary milling setups required. Shilo uses inductive heating of aerospace grade steel and investment casting. They also have one of the very few if not the only 5 gang barrel boring machine used to build Garrand barrels in World War Two. Tom Sellic designed this gun to reflect historical precedent. That is why it had an 1859/1864 patch box which is not standard on the original 1874. The 1874 is one of the finest big game rifles ever made. Shilo Sharpes is one of the finest guns made. My next attempt of the 1874 will be a similar rifle in 50-140 with a sillver Snabble and the rose collar. Simply put, this is a gun for keeps!!!

    Hi Kerry. Like I said, my original order was for a .45-100 2.6, but at the time, I had every intention of loading smokeless powder. BAD IDEA. So, I changed the order to a .45-70 in order to have the versatility of off-the-shelf ammo. My kids will inherit this rifle, and I'd rather they don't blow themselves up. :-) Personally, I'm going to learn to load black powder and use it exclusively. I have plenty of brass on hand, as I use a Henry All-Weather for moose hunting. ANYWAY ... it's a Long-Range Express, 30" Full Octagonal, Standard Wood, Steel Buttplate, Custom Bed, Pewter Tip, No fancies (I plan to do a lot of shooting with it), LR Soule and #113 MVA Globe. It's VERY similar to yours, in that it's a working gun and will see a great deal of use. I plan to get into Cowboy Action Long Range and other long-range shoots. I found your video VERY helpful.

    Thanks. I think you are the only guy so far, to really review the Quigley. I took your advice and did not order a Quigley. I agree the site is difficult to figure out all they why’s, wherefore’s and differences. Some of them look pretty much the same as other’s. After some confusion, consternation, procrastination and frustration. I missed out on a couple which sold before I could make my mind up. So I ordered one. Now I’ve paid the non refundable deposit. Didn’t the exact one I wanted become available the next week. Dang it, now I’m going to end up with two. It will be a couple of weeks before it ships. Figured I might as well upgrade the sights a bit. Still not sure what to go for.

  • @kcstott

    @kcstott

    2 жыл бұрын

    Tell me the caliber and what you intend to use the rifle for and I can give you advice on sights. Mainly it comes down to how far you intend to shoot and how good your eyes are. Mid range tang sights are good to about 600 to 750 yards. long range sights will get you to about 1200 yards. you will need a spirit level front sight for long range shooting. you can also opt for scope mount drill and tap so down the road you can buy an MVA scope and mount it with little effort.

  • @johnmacdonald1878

    @@kcstott Hi, it’s a #1 Sporter, 45 70, Standard 30” barrel, with Steel but plate, semi fancy wood, brass screws and bedded whatever that is. With buckhorn and blade. So a fairly basic rifle. I would be happy with it as is for a while. Until I get comfortable with it. Sooner rather than later, I will want to try longer ranges. So rather than have to ship it back I was thinking of upgrading the sights. My first thought was add a 113 front and just an MVA base plate. Shiloh can do this, The buck horn will work with the 113. They also advise it would be better to set up the sight as well. As you point out, the cost adds up in a hurry. So part of my hesitation is budget. By the time I add sights it is ball park Quigly price. It’s all kind of exciting, I had a plan to slowly save up for a nice gun, with lots of time to consider all the trimmings. I kind of told my self when I hit the submit button, I wouldn’t go to crazy on extras. But I want to get it done right. The other considerations, authenticity, soul or not, I have heard the soul was a later innovation and used more on target rifles. Authentic sporters were probably target rifles or wealthier armature hunter’s. Not sure what to do about the ordered gun, I have at least a couple of years to save up for it though. In the mean time, I will have a nice gun, I can use. I want it to be a gun I can use and enjoy and learn with. Thanks, again your comments steered me to prioritize nicer to use. Which is why I wanted a sporter with the shotgun stock. Rather than a Military Stock which is I think more typical of more original buffalo guns. I am a history nerd. And I grew up watching westerns.

  • @kcstott

    @kcstott

    Well you're on the right track. I'd say the 113 front is a very good choice especially if you plan to shoot beyond 600 yards. you need the spirit level to keep from making really bad shots. The rainbow arc of these rifles will not appreciate a canted sight picture at distance. You're not going to like the buck horn sight and it will not work well with the 113 globe sight. I mean it's not bad but it's not conducive to accuracy at all. Sorry for the delay. you tube seems to bury the comments in the notifications I guess I need to change some settings so i get an email instead.

    Fantastic video! I know I missed something's and I'll have to watch the video another 20 time's just to be confused. My shoulder's are in bad shape and I'd have to get my son to shoot these day's, but I would love to watch him shoot it. I've always been a lever action guy and as I was blessed at the age of 19 ( 1976 ) to meet Chuck Conner's the rifleman and got to spend 1.5 hour's one on one with him. My greatest memory from my youth! Oh yeah I'm a big color case harden guy so that would be a must. If anyone is interested as far as I know Tyler Gun Works is the only company who color case harden brass.

    Brass can only be chemically treated to resemble color case, There is a company called steel FX you can buy all the chemicals there to do any color you like on any metal you choose. As to your shoulder my suggestion is get a rifle with a shotgun butt. like a long range express, a business rifle, or a Creedmoor. And get it in a caliber that would be less punishing on your body. like a 38-50

    Being a bit of a Car guy myself I absolutely get the Gray Ghost RR comment. If it was a Lambo it would have to be a Miura. If I was to compare or try to match the Shiloh 45-110 to a car it would have to be something like the Duesenberg. Not to sound like a cliche. It's just that shooting this thing with a proper load of Blackpowder and extracting any kind of accuracy takes an enormous amount of work and self education. It would have been far easier to get a 45-70 and shoot smokeless but wheres the fun in that. Just like restoring a Duesenberg. It would be far easier to buy a Honda Civic. Not that I have Duesenberg experience.

    You can mitigate some of the recoil by using maybe a 420 grain bullet in lieu of a 535 or 540 grain 45 caliber bullet. Just seat the bullet down onto the black powder with a bit of compression. Oh by the way use a powder compression die with a card wad ontop of the powder, then in a separate operation seat the bullet down on the powder. Use a good black powder lubricant like DLG or SPG on the bullets grease grooves or use a grease cookie over the card wad.

    Why did you go with 45-120? I'd call Shiloh and get that changed to no bigger than a 45-110. It's a waste of powder and you will not see any improvement over the 45-110. Not to mention as you have seen the difficulty in getting brass. Not that 45-110 is any easier to find right now but at least Norma makes it I got my brass from Gun broker when they had it in 2018. Bought all my gear for the rifle years before I got it.

    After living 66 years of my life, and lusting after the life that was 150 years ago. Reading everything I could get my hands on about the mountain men, the frontiersmen, the hunters, and adventures of the old west. I let myself completely go, and purchased & traded rifles until I had worked myself to be the owner of a Pedersoli Sharps. The adventure has just begun. I would like to pull the stocks off and refinish them with a oil type hand rubbed finish. Sorry, I have never in my life had a rifle that was not to be shot and used, it would be a great sin to have a rifle like the Sharps and never fire the rifle. It would be like having a beautiful girlfriend, and never kiss or make love with her!!! Vaya Con Dios I would really like to see someone pull the butt stock off of a 1874 Sharps or one of the fine replicas, that are out there! And in all reality, some of the replicas made today, shoot as good as the orginals. If you don't mind, I would like to watch someone pull the butt stock, and replace it??? Thank you!!

    While that may be true for a 45-70, this is a 45-110 shooting a 545gr Paper patched money bullet with 104gr of Olde Eynsford 1.5fg the bullet is leaving the barrel at 1400 fps Chronoed. there is no place to put the butt in the shoulder that is remotely bearable. Higher would just cause collar bone hits and more bruising. It's simply the fact that the butt plate is short, narrow and has two pointy bits that dig in and cause bruising. I'm no recoil wimp, I have a 458 Lott that drives 500gr dangerous game solids at 2300 fps, the Lott is 3 pounds lighter but due to a 5.5" tall 2" wide 1.25" thick kickeez recoil pad it is manageable and is very easy to shoot.

  • @kcstott

    @kcstott

    Ай бұрын

    Within reason yes. And what I mean by that is. To maintain any sort of accuracy you need to manage fouling. You can do that with a grease groove bullet and the appropriate lube on the bullet. What you need to understand is this rifle and the paper patched bullet is nothing more than a snapshot in time of the evolution of the rifle and metallic cartridge. You could step back in time a few decades before this rifle and shoot paper cartridges. Or you could step forward a decade from this rifle and shoot a 45-70. You could even go so far as to load a 45-70 with smokeless powder and not have to deal with all the cleaning. So yes you could just load brass lead and powder and call it good, as long as you take care of bullet lube and fouling control.

    For short to mid range work Grease groove or Paper patch makes little difference. It is at long range where the paper patch shines. They fly better. You can use smokeless in Shiloh's But not the 2-7/8" case. At least it's not advised as the case is just huge and there's no reason to use a case that big with smokeless. If I were to run smokeless in a Sharps it would be in a 2 1/8" case, A 45-70 or something similar. you can get all the velocity you need with a smaller easier to get brass case. Be careful though. Not all Sharps are rated for Smokeless. Nothing imported will be Nitro proofed.

    Interesting video. However, the rear sight on my Shiloh 45-110 works just fine out to 200 yards, 6 inch groups. Instant kill.

  • @kcstott

    @kcstott

    Didn't work out as well how? Two really different sights. Buck horn even a full buck is a quick and dirty "close enough" sight. and on bison I'm sure it's fine out to about 400 yards. but that also means you must have the correct front sight too. For the Buck horn rear you should have a silver blade front sight. For the vernier you nearly have to have a globe sight. The vernier sight is a more precise and repeatable sight. It's just horribly slow to adjust. and if you wear bifocals like I do it's difficult and time consuming to read and set

    kcstott Interesting observations. I first had the blade front with the standard buckhorn. With my eyes, I need bifocals too, the blade sight wobbled too much, so I put a globe sight on. That was much better. Much better, 3-4 inches at 250 yards. I then got the vernier peep sight, and my groups opened up to more than double that. I burned a lot of powder to see if it improved, being careful to load the cartridges exactly the same as when using the buckhorn. I even weighed the slugs to be sure there were no air bubbles. It was a fail. The groups refused to tighten up. Back to the buckhorn. All was well again. And I hit my bison cleanly.

    Denis Degamon most of my problem is my eyes. Never were all that good in the first place, and age is not helping much. I don't do any competition shooting, so I've probably got the loads as reasonably accurate as I can expect. For hunting at no more than 100 yards, it will do. Oddly, much of my shooting enjoyment is smelling the black powder smoke--I never use the substitutes--and the thunderous boom. At the local range I kind of get a kick out of usually being the only one with a real wood stock. It does get a fair amount of comments.

    To be clear. An FFL is required in every state these rifles are shipped to in the US. Black powder has little to do with it. The exemptions that apply to modern made replica black powder firearms are Muzzle loaders (Match, flint, wheel, or percussion) or breach loading percussion. The firearms are exempt and not recognized at the federal level as a firearm. The replica antique firearm exemption only applies to muzzle loaders. The Shiloh sharps fires a fixed cartridge. Regardless of propellent type it must go through an FFL. A real sharps from the period would be labeled a true antique due to manufacture prior to 1899. and is cash and carry nearly everywhere.

    Denis Degamon When I was there Shiloh had several available. Not infrequently folks order them, and when they get the final bill they bail out. However, none were the simple models, none were 45-70 and most if not all had the better grade wood. All were beautiful. The Shiloh fellow there said they don't last very long at all, no matter the caliber or anything else. In our words, you don't have any time to ponder a decision.

    no not really. This is just my opinion, First off there is burn rate of the powder. in a 2 7/8" case 104 grains is all that will burn properly and not throw unburnt powder out the barrel. this is true will all black powder guns. second is all the 2 7/8 case gives you is an extra 30gr of powder capacity. what it really allows for is a heavier bullet to be seated further out. so your 45-70 shooting a 400 grain at 1400-1500 fps well my 45-110 can push a 540gr at 1300 fps. so that's 2000 Flbs/E for your 45-70 and 2267 Flbs/E for the 45-110 not really all that much different. I'm trying to get the loads up to 1500 FPS with the 540gr bullet but I don't think its possible. If I can that would be 2700 Flbs/E. Problem is you feel all of it on the shoulder. Not fun

    @@donrussell1881 Keep in mind. And I'm not recommending it. The 45-70 with smokeless loads, modern brass and Shiloh action can handle Ruger #1 load data. which is closer to 458 win mag. I also own a 458 Lott and I'm building a 416 Rigby on a 1917 Enfield action. Good stuff. If I was to take this rifle hunting I'd be using a reduced load. or a lighter bullet. Depending on the animal of course.

    A few points…Shilohs website is horrible…it’s hard to figure out. The worst part is they take your money but you don’t lock in a price…that’s a ripoff that I’ve never heard of…that’s the idea of making a deposit. Last, even their premium walnut stocks are fairly plain compared to that used for double guns like Fox. If I buy one bit would be through Bill.

  • @kcstott

    and those are the reasons I went through Bill, everything you mention. The issue with price protection, well they don't raise prices often. I've been drooling over that Quigley for a long time and they only raised the price $400 in 10 years so it's not bad all things considered. But yeah if you put a deposit down it should lock in the price

    Your wrong on the time. My first one the quigley was 18 months. That was four or five years ago. My last one in a carbine was 16 months which I’m picking up in July. Just saying somebody is blowing hot air.

  • @kcstott

    @kcstott

    Just because you got your rifle in 18 months doesn't mean I'm wrong. The lead time varies considerably on these rifles and It depends on when you order it. Little did I know they start production on the Quigley's late in the year at least that's what they did when I ordered mine. My rifle took 12 months to get with a jump in line from Mr. Goodman and the Bryant's were stating 2 years plus at the time. Keep in mind these are custom ordered so how you configure your rifle determines the lead time. Your carbine is a simpler build so less lead time.

    Everyone at my local range has an AR15 that is far more lethal and less expensive than the Sharps. Some may even be more accurate. still, if I showed up at the range with one of these Shiloh Sharps, everyone would come over to fondle it.

    That poodle shooter is no where near the range, accuracy, and lethality of a Sharps. They are some fine shooters for their own application if you pick the right one, don't misunderstand me, but Shiloh Sharps are in a class all by themselves.

    Ah that's ridiculous! I have one of these in 45-70, actually I own 6 45-70's of various makes models, a 45-110 is not that much worse than a hot 45-70. At first I will admit my shoulder was sore after 20 rounds, but I bought a good quality pad, modified it a bit, and now I will go out and shoot 40-50 rounds at one sitting, with NO pain what so ever. I am 64 BTW. Plus the pain is part of the fun.

    Right they are both made in Big Timber Montana, I understand they used to be one company but had a falling out. I was in Montana last fall, stopped at Shiloh and asked if they would look my rifle over, the guy took it apart checked it out thought it had only about 200 rounds through it, he cleaned and lubricated it, and even leveled my MVA sight. There are various video here on KZread of the factory, it looks just like that, and I have a picture of my rifle being adjusted on the same work bench they do final assembly.@@kcstott
