Shillong in the 1990's - images of change in the Scotland of the east

Hindustan Ambassador and Fiat Premier Padmini cars still predominate the streets of shillong back in the 1980's!
Shillong is aptly called the Scotland of the East, for its scenic beauty and beautiful slanting roof houses tightly packed 4,908 feet (1,496 m) above sea level. In 2016, Meghalaya was voted "India's Favourite Hill Station" by HolidayIQ.
The Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians still stands strong in the heart of the capital although the church got destroyed in a fire in 1936. This cathedral falls under the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Shillong, which administers similar churches in Meghalaya's Khasi and Jaintia hills.
The jacaranda trees are seen in full bloom. It is heavenly to behold when this purple layer of Jacaranda flowers covers the car tops, paths, lawns, footpaths, and roads of Meghalaya. Some young women are also seen walking down the road wearing kurta with popular Chinese pop hair cut which is now back.
Taxis in Shillong were mostly Ambassador cars, Tata Sumo in the early 80s and 90s. These local taxis are now defunct. Omni vans and Maruti 800 were also popular cars.
This footage is part of the broadcast stock footage archive of Wilderness Films India Ltd., the largest collection of HD imagery from South Asia. 5:20 Bawri Mansion, Dhanketi. Those good old days when my father used to drive us through shillong towards silchar on our Maruti 800 back in 99. I remember picking and collecting the pine cones, stopping by the woods to take a stroll or accompanying my parents to Bara Bazaar to shop for fresh veggies. Listening to "As long as you love me" by BSB, watching the then 20 year olds wearing black jackets and riding rx100s and wishing to grow up soon. Ah god if i had just stayed young.

From 2007 or so, Guwahati changed drastically and Shillong from 2014-2015 but it's still gradual.

Less cars no traffic jam, no congestion. City buses and Ambassador taxis plying in the street. I remember that time i am a school student studying in class 6 at pynthorumkhrah school. Green field of Golflink is very clean and free from plastics and dumping garbage...but now shillong has lost it's natural beauty and development is only new buildings and new cars. I want to give a lot of thank to this fellow who make this video.

Some officially declared advanced tribe towns in Nagaland have not yet reached even a quarter level of what Shillong was in the 90's in terms of development and infrastructure. Let's say ....it's been more than 2 decades now.

There are so many young people from Nagaland here in Shillong. Generally they are really bad in studies. They are really into fashion and partying. Not saying it's bad to have fun but it seems most of them are here just to have fun.

@@yashmakhija8888 Pollution level is Great at minimal level. The rain is constantly washing the city clean. So , It is still the Finest and awesome place to Stay. But The Traffic is Crazy on normal days( Before Covid) it would be advice to stay near your work place . And if you do stay in Shillong, Please throw your garbage in the Dustbin. This is not Delhi or Mumbai . And If you dont follow rules , you will run out of Luck.
