    Hi Francis. Do you find there is much difference in the nature of the wood between a root ball and an ordinary junction where a branch meets the main trunk?

  • @FrancisMcCaffrey5

    @FrancisMcCaffrey5

    Yes the handles are more unique and less carving is needed. But the roots are so hard to dig out

    @@FrancisMcCaffrey5 Thanks Francis. The reason I asked is because I've already dug out twenty saplings and I was curious. They're hanging now in my shed. I'm gutted I have to wait three years though lol

    I really enjoy your channel. Would you be willing to demonstrate a few self-defense moves with a shillelagh. One or two self-defense moves someone in his 70s could use to gain time to get away if attacked. Do you know of any online instruction for self-defense with a stick I could learn from? Thank you for helping.

    Hi Stephen , there are a few such as Antrim Stick , Doyle stick fighting , black velvet , floro systems and this group from Russia do a lot of good video also. I’m no expert on fighting but I have used my own stick for self defence twice over the past few years. Once against an angry guy who confronted me at the back of my store and once on an aggressive drunk.

    Awesome! I have bought a few from Olde Shillelagh stick Makers. I love them. I am seriously considering one from you too. I love the Natural look of yours too. What Is your thought on Lead loading? Do you load any of your sticks?

    I don’t lead load as I use real blackthorn also I don’t attach the hand you get a one piece stick from me not 2 piece

    I have made several vids chatting about this I’ll make another next week if you like. Lead loading was done to ash sticks in Limerick area and to loaded butts. Lead was added to lighted wood sticks to give it a heavy feel like blackthorn. Blackthorn is a dense heavy wood so no need to lead load. Also their are several issues with lead loading sticks.

    Question: Since blackthorn knobs are subject to cracks, why not fill the cracks with a contrasting-colored epoxy? I would think that would be pretty cool since you'd be sanding it anyway. And most knobs won't be smashing concrete blocks to bits.

  • @FrancisMcCaffrey5

    @FrancisMcCaffrey5

    I personally think coloured epoxy in the cracks looks terrible and kind of a tacky gimmick, who wants to see blue or some unnatural color in a traditional rustic walking stick . As you can tell I really don’t like it on walking sticks. I’ve seen some tables that it’s look ok in that’s about all

    @@FrancisMcCaffrey5 Ha ha! Yes, definitely a gimmick, and a different type of product / customer you'd be going for. If you want to be strictly traditional I agree, don't do it. I just binge-watched a bunch of your videos and a couple times I heard you say there were customers looking for a Gandalf staff or things along that line, and also many sticks end up as firewood, so I thought to turn rejects into a resource instead. Maybe sell them to someone with that clientele? Love the videos!
