Shigellosis (Shigella) “A Cause of Bloody Diarrhea”: Pathophysiology, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

Shigellosis (Shigella) “A Cause of Bloody Diarrhea” | Pathophysiology, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment
Shigellosis is a gastrointestinal infection that is caused by Shigella bacteria. There are 4 species of shigella bacteria that can cause this condition, all of which are gram negative, non-spore forming bacteria. Shigellosis can cause key characteristic findings, including high fever, bloody diarrhea (depending on species that is causing infection), and a left shift of white blood cells. In this lesson, we discuss in-depth the pathophysiology of this condition, how it’s transmitted, the signs and symptoms, how it’s diagnosed and how it’s treated.

Thanks so much for the information, which reminds me that I once got a Shigella infection when I was 17-18 years old. I got PR bleeding and serious abdominal cramps.

When I first had it, I couldn't even walk and had to crawl to the bed and was taken by ambulance. I was hospitalized for three days, tried every antibiotic, and finally they found one that worked. I was discharged with an IV port in the back of my hand, and had to go to the out-patient hospital for five days to have antibiotics put in my IV!

So I had this over a year ago. Was tested again several months later, and it was still in my stool. Was tested negative for HIV, and other immunocompromising diseases, and was told I could be colonized. Why would this happen? And what do I do now?
