Shifting Gears- 12 Speed VOLVO FH

This is how a 12 speed gearbox LOOKS and WORKS like...
Its called 12 speed even most drivers counting the gears to 6..
Most drivers count 5 LO - 5 HI - 6 LO -6 HI or 9-10-11-12...
You will find 3 gear on the stick 1 range and 1 split button..
The split gear are just needed when your driving on steep hills or heavy loaded..
I begin to split the gear on the 4th gear..
4LO-4HI-5LO-5HI-6LO-6HI...
Over the years this turned out to be (my) best way to shift..
Hope you will enjoy watching this video...

This is one of those educational type films that is brilliant, but still looks complex, especially to someone like me who only ever has 6 gears to play with. I would have to drive this truck and feel my way round the gear changes with practise, and lots of it...ha ha - Brilliant Andy I can feel myself now driving a Volvo, well almost. :-)

    I drive '03 FH12 460 and i switch gears slightly differently: on empty truck: 2LO - 4LO - 5LO - 5HI - 6LO - 6HI 24000kg: 2LO - 3LO - 4LO - 4HI - 5LO - 5HI - 6LO - 6HI I use first gear only on uphill and when I need to go really slow for some reason. Ofcourse the I make slight adjustments when going down- or uphill.

I see the driver uses first gear a lot then skip shifts into third while the auto box only uses first on a hill. If I was driving a manual, I would use second high or even third low to take off loaded as does the auto box. Also, having driven the auto box I would drive a manual the way the auto box operates and not be afraid to rev it out momentarily then skip two or three (half) gears. For someone who is trying to get their head around this 'box, dont' think of it as a twelve speed, but as an six speed with high and low ratios for each gear.

You start with 1L - 2L-3L then Range 4L-4H-5L-5H-6L-6H.. If you empty you can stay on Low till 5th gear.. If your really going into the mountains it could be to use the High spilit also for the 1-2 and 3rd gear but thats not often happen.. Most the time you can shift to the 4th or 5th gear before you have to split for the first time..You know with the split you have 1/2 gear available if a hole gear is to high for the mountain..I hope that helped..Andy

Here in Brazil, more than 80% of the Volvo´s trucks is equiped with I shift and Scania going in the same way with Opticruise, including my Scania. I like to change gears sometimes, but the comfort of automatic gears box is the best for don´t stress in the traffic . Hugs from Brazil and have a good weekend.

the old scania 10 speed range change 'box you set off in 4th missed 6th (cos by time the rang change had changed in to high there was virtually no difference between 5th and 6th) and up to 10th, you only used 6 out of the 10 available,,possibly less if there was a V8 in front of it.

I school on a Volvo FH 12 420 HP, you think the instructor would be upset if I change like this? :)), What little it without half, just shifting gears, and here I mean the speed range of 3 to preparing for the 4th? It would be a wrong gesture for a beginner like me? : D, I'm asking this because I'm very impressed your driving style and how they change speeds, you think I do something wrong? Thank you!

Yes,thanks,it helped of course ;) i only didnt understand this ''If you empty you can stay on Low till 5th gear.." - so is it 5th gear on gear lever ( 9th gear) or it's like 3L ? And how happens the range changing ( big or little group) ? i mean the L or H spliter you must push at first and than clutch, and for example if you are in H gear (split) and must go down in the gears, you can already split down to L and it wont change yet, before you push the clutch BUT HOW IT'S with HI-LO range??

Andy explain me please how i must change gears, for example, if i'm hauling 24 tonnes and i'm starting to drive...with a cargo i always must start with the 1st gear, its 1L ,i'm right? than second gear ( 1H), than third (2L) and so on or it isnt necessary to switch all gears one by one? i think the most difficult thing in this is to switch gears down...

I think starting in several gears has something to do with the differential. My car is only suitable for starting with 1L when the load is 35 tons. With a load of 25 tons and starting with 2L, I don't think it is suitable. I'm at 100km/h at about 1400rpm.

Ok one thing i've got to tell you.... You are awfully lucky to have a Synchromesh transmission. Because non-synchro transmission the best way to get screwed is to drive on neutral... Anyway you must never and i said never drive on neutral when pulling or braking.... The compression the engine can give you help a little bit for braking... It's maybe a little bit but on a brake maintenance it make the difference....

  • @Bladsmith

    @Bladsmith

    9 жыл бұрын

Lucky? Only Sisu offers non-synchro trucks today and that's special orders only. Also, rolling in neutral will damage any gearbox, because the gearbox oil pump is driven by the engine. Aand the engine brake is used for fuel efficiency and eliminating brake fade on long declines, not brake conservation.

Depends on what engine it is. First truck I learned to drive was a Volvo FH 440. When I took my license for truck+trailer (gross weight was 53 tons and max weight is 64 tons in Sweden) I started on 1-lo. Then 1-hi, 2-hi, 3-hi, 4-hi, 5-lo, 5-hi, 6-lo, 6-hi, on plain road. Then I drove a Volvo FH 540 with I-Shift but empty weight on that truck was 16 tons without trailer and 28 tons with trailer. When you're transporting gravel and asphalt and only has 540hp when most trucks in the same line of work rarely has less than 580hp, it gets quite heavy.

I'm still struggling with those range-splitting gearboxes. When do you range and when do you split? You have those numbers on the shifter - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. If I go through 1, 2 and 3 then press a button and go through 4, 5 and 6, did I use the range gears or the split gears?
