Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. Once you achieve an understanding of algebra, the higher-level math subjects become accessible to you. Without it, it's impossible to move forward. It's used by people with lots of different jobs, like carpentry, engineering, and fashion design. In these tutorials, we'll cover a lot of ground. Some of the topics include linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, systems of equations, factoring expressions, quadratic expressions, exponents, functions, and ratios.
About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

If anyone is still reading, I would like to explain how to move horizontally (h) If you wanted to move the curve 3 to the right, you would want to get the point (3,0), assuming you didn’t move the curve up or down You would have to get y to 0, starting from y = x^2 when x is 3. The way to get y back to 0 is to subtract the 3 back from x, so y would be 0. The final equation would be y = (x-3)^2

Omg you guys this video almost helps completely understand vertex form and the inner workings of the parabola. So the vertex form is as follows, f(x)=a(x-h)^2+k This video shows you: -x^2 is the general form of the parabola starting from the epicenter of the graph -"a" reflects down if negative and up if positive. Also that a is the stretching and narrowing of the parabola. |a|>1= Wider and slower in growth, while |a|

Not really, I do understand where you're coming from tho, I'd recommend watching this video after you've learned almost everything there is about parabolas and graphing quadratics, this should be the very last watch imo. Once you know the basic vertex form equation and stuff, I'd say this video perfectly summarises and intuitively explains all that you would've previously mathematically learned.

LET ME HELP EVERYONE OUT! I was able to figure it out after messing around with graphing. It is all about INTERCEPTS. Do you know y=mx+b? "b" is the y intercept. y=x IS a linear equation. Just like y=mx+b. y=x equals y=x+0 Meaning the y intercept is zero. When you have y=x+5 this means the y intercept is 5. So when x=0 y=5 on the graph plane. If you didn't get the above, learn what y=mx+b is/means and what b is, it is the y intercept (learn what the y intercept is) Now for HORIZONTAL shifts. y=(x-3)^2 if you graph it you see that where it intersects the x axis is at positive 3. This is because positive 3 is the x intercept. Where x intercepts the x axis. You just make to make the equation equal zero. Another ex to get my point across y=(x-1)^2 Yep you guessed it, the x intercept is 1. That means this parabola starts on 1 instead of 0 for y=x^2 You are welcome, idk why the 82k people who watched this never mentioned the whole point of shifting is INTERCEPTS lol edited 4 years later hi

when you understand it. so, we subtitute 0 into our function. it does not give as y as the output. it gives us y - k. so if we are at 0, but we know that this 0 on the y axis is when we subtract k from y. we have to move up on the y axis to get to where our output is. it is a simple equation: we have to be at k, coz if we subtract k from y we must be at 0. like k = 2; you must be at 2 on the axis this logic is also applicable on the x axis.

The higher up you get in KA the more complicated it gets, not complex but complicated. They begin skipping too much, assuming assumed knowledge, and before you know it you’re behind forever because they never took the time to explain every step, and do a poor job with explaining the why an action occurs for intuition.

+Nicole Volek In his video, H basically shifts the graph left or right, and K shifts it up or down. For example: With the equation: y = x+3 Substituting k = 3, the graph would move 3 units upwards, and substituting k = -3, the graph would move 3 units downwards. Likewise, if I have y=(x-k)^2 And I substitute k=3, it becomes y=(x-3)^2 If you substitute in a x value, you will notice that the graph would shift 3 units to the RIGHT. ( And no I didn't get left and right mixed up) Similarly, y = (x+3)^2 would make the graph shift 3 units to the LEFT. Best way to make sense of this would be to graph the following: y=x^2 y=x+3 y=x-3 y=(x-3)^2 y=(x+3)^2 Hope this all makes sense
