His style is very curious, his hands are always down, close to his waist, but the style itself shows to be very efficient, full of deception movements followed by powerful strikes.

Great video, it's definately a side of Shaolin Kungfu that is unknown to many people. Most we see from shaolin kung fu is taolu (a set of pre choreopgrahed techniques/movements) which by no means reflects realistic fighting, what they show on this video is quite the opposite.

He truly is the best....I've never seen anything like this. Perhaps you are right about ambitious etc. But I think....he may be a little arrogant only because, he is actually that good. I have never seen anybody demonstrate this level of mastery of the principles of kung fu. in fact, most kungfu fighting today looks like dancing and is completely impractical. Shi Dejian knows the movements are just forms, its the spirit that fights.

There was a BBC documentary about an Anglican pastor who went to Shaolin to learn out finding the spiritual path. He did not find it in Shaolin Temple as it was to materialistic, but at with this master in his small mountain temple. Here they practice nei gong and qi gong in their daily tasks like farming and cleaning. These things like stance work are core in kung fu. They seem peaceful and it shows in their kung fu.

Real Shaolin is rare even in China, and many people, even after "learning" it, don't know how to apply it and panic. Unlike boxing, where you throw an impromptu combination hoping to catch your opponent with some of them since parrying is assumed to be impossible for all of them. Here, you'll have to train your body to react (mind AND body). As he demonstrates, after the first punch, you throw them off balance, rendering it impossible to throw a second one anyways

xiao hong quan means small red fist. it's misunderstood as small flooding fist. but the character hong in this context is for red. Xiao = small (shao as in shaolin means young/small like a kid or a sapling) Hong = red, quan (chaun) fist great form. a lot of stuff in it. even grappling.

@MechPhantom: Totally agree with you. It's always a treat watching Shi De Jian clips since you get an idea of how these arts are really meant to be used. Notice how he actually encourages his student to try and strike him in an unplanned, genuine way? You aren't going to find that in the states.

@MechPhantom Well all Chinese internal martial arts have fighting applications. It depends on the person's intentions of learning the particular internal art.

@MechPhantom: Well what I mean is that when he asks his student to attack, you can read that he encourages him to go faster, instead of many of these demos you'll encounter where the student puts no force into their attack at all and keeps their arm out there forever. As for Shi De Jian's speed, he might not be the fastest according to you, but he has true knowledge of the applications, which counts for quite a bit.

  • @Skillking22
    @Skillking2213 жыл бұрын

@MechPhantom Sadly, the reason is because many Kung Fu practitioners nowadays only focus on performing forms but not combat applications; Many of them don't or have little knowledge on how to apply their Kung Fu forms for combat. Some even think that forms are useless for combat and would resort to kickboxing instead, when in fact, forms are meant to teach combat applications as well as strengthening the fighter, building strong foundation.

@VizzeOne Right... and armbar won't actually *break your arm* and strangle holds won't *kill you* if held long enough. Not to mention most if not all BJJ black belts know how to break a man's neck and wrestling throws can be fatal if the other person does not know how to break his fall. What ARE these deadly techniques? Eyes pokes, a punch to the throat? Do you think people that train is BJJ and Muay Thai do not know how to do something so simple?

  • @MartialArtsCN

@VizzeOne What? The rear naked strangle/choke is one of the most common submissions in MMA! Jujitsu was the fighting art of the Samurai at one time, and Muay Thai was a boxing art used by ancient Siam, both can be used to kill and both are the core of modern mma. I do wushu and trained in sanda a little, but I don't worship the monks like they are some kind of super anime ninjas....

@MechPhantom Tai Chi conflicts with our general perception of martial arts as its movements are slower. Well, it is slow ONLY during practice to sort of create harmony with the body and generate internal force. Obviously in combat it will be done fast. It's kinda' hard for me to explain it. I think you should watch more documentaries about Tai Chi. It is strictly a martial art, not just a healthy exercise.

Flashyness, impressiveness, has value in combat although it might not be apparant. I agree that effectiveness must be the focus, but impressing on opponents can be effective as well in certain ways. There are different ways to skin a cat... think about it.

  • @Darrinrice22

@SimKoning it doesn't matter, in real life you have to close the gap, arts come from different times and are useful in different ways, so try and grab someone who is attacking what is vital to being able to see? get palmed in the face multiple times and hit in fatal areas before you cant even grab someone? its not like they dont teach to evade people grabing you in kungfu, MMA is a real well rounded way to train, this is just more spiritual and will make you a better fighter in the long run.

Gosh no need to get personal, mate. I was just venting my ideas. One instance could be finishing off one opponent in a quasi-flashy style. Of course you only need to show the other opponents that your skills surpass the perceived skills of themselves. If you sidestep a fight, you won that fight, one of the first things I learned in Jiu-Jitsu. No matter how. Of course you can't do that with all opponents, but to some. Running is another way. Killing your opponents yet another. Have a nice day.

@MechPhantom There's no such thing as the fastest martial art. Any style can be done fast and combat efficient. Each style has its own fighting principles, and Tai Chi relies on yielding and offbalancing the opponent using minimal force and locking opponent's movements so that the opponent would have hard time to even counter attack. Like I said, it's the fighter that counts, not the style.
