Sheryl Crow - "Redemption Day" LIVE feat. Johnny Cash (2014)

Музыка

It's been nearly two decades since Sheryl Crow released her chart-smashing, self-titled album in 1996, but the pop-gone-country chameleon is still soaking up the sun with a brand-new live concert video featuring a collaboration with Johnny Cash on her critically acclaimed album track, "Redemption Day."
See Where Johnny Cash Lands on Our 100 Greatest Artists List
Set to a new arrangement of the tune with Crow and Cash exchanging verses, the video is a compilation of Sheryl Crow concert footage and scenes of Johnny Cash living the good life in the Seventies, all interspersed with gritty, historic scenes of American war involvement throughout the 20th century. In one shot, you see American soldiers running through tall grasses in the jungles of Vietnam, before seeing dozens of bombs being dropped out of U.S. Army helicopters. In another, Cash is shown performing in black and white, later riding a train and contemplating in front of a gravestone in bittersweet technicolor.
The tune was originally written by Crow in 1995 and included on her Sheryl Crow album, inspired by an eye-opening visit to Bosnia in the same year with Hillary Clinton. "I really experienced something I'd never seen before, which was what it looks like to be in a war-torn area and meet people who had suffered through that," Crow explains to Rolling Stone Country. "Part of [Hillary's] goal was to speak to the women and children in those villages. The moment we went into Bosnia, the whole genocide was happening in Rwanda and we sat back and watched it, yet Bosnia seemed to be kind of a stronghold in Europe and we needed the military presence there. I came home really struck by the question of why we invest in some countries and other countries we don't."
The same question was still being asked by Cash in 2003 when he decided to cover "Redemption Day," calling Crow to grill her and gain insight into its inception. "He really wanted to understand what had motivated the song to be written so that he could sing it and he wasn't just putting his voice but his actual standing in the song. That's really why I believed everything that Johnny sang; his words had real meaning and real connection to his spirit."
Although the deliverance of Cash's rendition was stalled due to his death a few months after recording, it still remained relevant, "...particularly after invading Iraq and nobody really understanding, even after the realization that that had nothing to do with 9/11 and that there were no weapons of mass destruction. That question is always looming: 'Why are we in areas of the world when we have very little to do with our relationship with that part of the world?' And that was one of the reasons I think Johnny was interested in the song," says Crow.
"Then he died a couple months later, and it took years, and I'd made many phone calls to Rick Rubin and asked when this was going to be out. But for me it was so interesting because of what was happening in the world and I felt like the weight of his voice and him being such an iconic figure in American history and in the American art form of country music that it would happen when he said those words."
It was ultimately included on American VI: Ain't No Grave, Cash's posthumous album released in 2010, and after hearing the recording, Crow was eventually inspired to combine their individual takes into a new arrangement for performing live with the new video. "We talked to John Carter, Johnny's son, and said, 'We feel like adding his voice to this and it really brings it home. We're all feeling the weight of the chaos we seem to be trying to navigate through - politically, socially, everything in the world is supposed to be interconnected, and there's so much unrest and so much hostility. I mean, he's singing about peace... it was really in line with his belief system and Christianity. So we asked if we could mix his voice in and John Carter loved the idea, and we just used footage of him looking like himself - all aspects of himself through his career - so you see that and you hear his voice, and it's very profound and impactful when you see it live."

I watched her from the 4th row sing that song. By the end pretty much everybody I could see was in tears. There was a long moment of silence and then a roar. That song clearly means a lot to many of us, but it means different things. No matter. Johnny Cash and Sheryl Crow do the impossible and unite us. Even for a minute.

For me and my dad, we fought different wars, but our memories made us mild for those who fought against and with us, but furious about them who made us kill.. For what? Their games I think. So be it, It's our redemption day..

I just came to this song with Sheryl Crow's Treads album, which has to be the frontrunner for a Grammy in its category. Fantastic song written by Sheryl, performed with weight by the legend Johnny Cash, who clearly believed the song meant something to him, and the artful combination of the two with a new piano and orchestral arrangement, unforgettable. This will receive many plays, an instant classic.

Saw this live sept 20, she did this at the rascal flatts concert in toronto, hadnt heard it before then, and the minute she explained the story of the back ground, she got teary and choked up.. you just knew it was gonna be a great song. but when johnny cash started to sing, i got duck bumps, and it was like every hair on my body became electrified.. i understood her choked emotions.. at the end of the song the crowd went nuts , we were standing in ovation for a song that hits so close to home, in this crazy time of ISIS, holy wars, and corruption...

I bought the CD this song came on new while deployed somewhere for the Air Force and this has always been my favorite song on it. I just acquired the Johnny Cash American series and have been listening to them a bit at a time. I saw that this was on American V and listened to it first. Now Johnny was in poor health when recording these last tracks, but it gives a haunting depth and character to those songs. He and Rick Rubens really made great choices for the compositions. I had no Idea that Sheryl had done this collaboration with his voice. It was really moving. I've always liked her and her music. I'm glad she did this, it's a pretty timeless song.

I've wept for those who suffer long But how I weep for those who've gone Into rooms of grief and questioned wrong But keep on killing It's in the soul to feel such things But weak to watch without speaking Oh what mercy sadness brings If God be willing There is a train that's heading straight To heaven's gate, to heaven's gate And on the way, child and man And woman wait, watch and wait For redemption day Fire rages in the streets And swallows everything it meets It's just an image often seen On television Come leaders, come you men of great Let us hear you pontificate Your many virtues laid to waste And we aren't listening What do you have for us today Throw us a bone but save the plate On why we waited til so late Was there no oil to excavate No riches in trade for the fate Of every person who died in hate Throw us a bone, you men of great There is a train that's heading straight To heaven's gate, to heaven's gate And on the way, child and man And woman wait, watch and wait For redemption day It's buried in the countryside It's exploding in the shells at night It's everywhere a baby cries Freedom

According to the 'net, Cheryl wrote this song in response to how Western nations responded to the genocide in Rawanda (mostly hands-off) vs. the war in the Balkans where they got involved. The Rawanda-centered lyrics "it's in the soul to feel such things; but weak to watch without speaking," and "on why we waited for so late, was there no oil to excavate, no riches in trade for the fate of every person who died in hate..." The pictures behind the performers, though, don't make as much sense in that context - they appear to be a generalization of the massive commitments of US wars in the 20th century mixed with the flag. Unless, it's just to say look we've got the power, but how we use it is the point. Anyway, it's such a great song and the whole presentation is very powerful.

How was Vietnam encroaching on American freedoms? The U.S murdered innocent civilians, spent untold billions on a pointless war, the American public were lied to (secret bombing in North Vietnam under Nixon) and in the end abandoned the South anyway leaving untold thousands to be slaughtered by VC. Sorry forgot to mention roughly 42,000 American soldiers dead and over 100,000 injured. For what? American Freedom? You can thank the student movement and Congress for putting a stop to it.

Doesn't matter what you've done. Turn to Jesus. Repent. Godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted but ""worldly"" sorrow brings death. Your debts are paid for in full. But you must repent & receive it. It's like GOD put $500,000 in a bank account for you. But you don't believe HIM so you never tap into that account. It goes untouched. What a shame. JESUS. The answer to all problems. That NARROW PATH.

This is clearly a lie, Johnny can't be there. He died back in '03

@Vicealmirante Lindermann, there is no lie here. If you research this song you will find that Sheryl Crow originality wrote it, and a few weeks before he died in 2003 Johnny Cash did a cover of this song after talking with Sheryl about the song. Years later, Sheryl decided to honor Johnny Cash by doing an updated version of the song that combined Cash’s cover and her voice singing it - the result is this powerful rendition. She also did an amazing video for this updated combined version which is also on KZread. When Sheryl performs the updated version live (as she did here) Johnny Cash’s vocals are added from the cover he did before he died (it was in the news that the Johnny Cash Estate gave Sheryl Crow permission to use Cash’s cover in this way). It is amazingly beautiful and emotional to hear and see Sheryl Crow perform this updated version in combination with Cash’s vocals.
