Sherpa Crestone PEAK SERIES Roof Rack - Walk-through, Install & Review

The 4Runner got a pretty awesome upgrade a few months ago that I’d been looking forward to for quite some time: the Crestone roof rack from Sherpa Equipment Co. I'm excited to share this rack with you, how to install it, and what my experience has been like with it.

Great install video, thank you for taking the time to record it and do the voice over an edit. I know how much time that consumes. I’m hoping to install my Crestone on my. 4Runner in the next 1 to 2 weeks (fingers crossed for good weather), as I bought mine during Black Friday, and they received it just before Christmas. Really eager to get it installed, and wife will be happy to get it out of the dining room lol.

Great video! Thanks for sharing your experience. Been deciding between Sherpa Rack ans Westscott Design racks. One caught my attention about sherpa was the rubber blocks. That is really a well thought design instead of applying a sealant. I might go with Sherpa esp they have the Crestone Sports series now and it suits my needs. Looking forward to your videos. Cheers!

With the spring loaded inserts into the rails, do you have an issue with finding the right length bolt to use for different accessories? I assume there is about 1/4 inch distance until a bolt will bottom out on the rail. This differs from racks where the bolts are in the rails pointing up vice screwed down into the rails. I'd prefer not to remove the side raile to slide in bolts with threads pointing up. Tks

Thanks, Gari! Yeah, the rack is high-quality for sure and I’ve looked at Prinsu, but it’s tough to beat Sherpa. The Crestone costs about $300 more, but the difference in price is well worth it.

Awesome video! I’ll be between the Sherpa and Westcott Designs now. Weird question…have you done voice acting for games before? Your recorded voice-over sections sound soooo much like a narrator in something, but I can’t remember what…

Thank you! I’m glad you found it helpful. I’ve gotten to know some of the crew at Sherpa and they are great people. The company as a whole is very genuine and authentic. Definitely feel good about supporting them. No, I’ve never been a voice actor before, but I’m flattered you think I’d make a decent one haha

@@nickmcdvtt if I ever find the game I’m thinking of, I’ll be sure to let you know, haha! My primary motivation to the Westcott is they have the optional floor panels that let you create a platform. I want to be able to occasionally use as a photography perspective for Timelapses and stuff. I’m sure I could achieve something similar on other racks with plywood, it just wouldn’t be as refined looking. But I’m trying to find the best of all worlds. Sherpa is def on the short list though!

Sherpa has panels that allow you to do that and they have two different sizes, I believe. They also have a whole suite of brackets and accessories.

I did exactly the opposite, I looked into Sherpa roof rack, and eventually chose Southern Style Off-road because of how their brackets designed, which are made of steel with gussets as reinforcement to reduce the repeat stress caused by swing force when off-roading. Everything is equal, we know the steel is a lot stronger than aluminum, plus the gusset making even more stronger. The L shaped Sherpa brackets are made of aluminum, it’s been bent already with stress, it will be fragile and easier to break after repeat stress.

Bottom line: the SSO is a good rack and I enjoyed it, but it simply doesn’t come close to the overall design, strength, and versatility the Sherpa delivers. Material thickness is not the only thing to consider in a rack’s design but if that is a large concern, Sherpa uses thicker, 1/4” aluminum sheet metal for added strength. Fatigue and ductile failure only occur in metals after repeated deformation and a certain number of cycles to failure, depending on material properties and part design. To my knowledge, no component of a Sherpa rack has ever bent within its tolerable load limits and I haven’t had that issue in my field testing, which includes off-roading in more rigorous places like Moab. It’s a more solid rack and even if a part does fail, Sherpa would take care of me because they back their products with a warranty. You’ll definitely enjoy your SSO. It was good to me. I was just ready for something much better to meet my future adventure plans. Thank you for your comments and support. Enjoy your rack and have fun on your adventures!

If your bending 1/4” plate aluminum on a roof rack you are severely overloading your rack. I think if your hitting trees maybe, but even then you can’t go wrong with Sherpa. I have one myself on a 3rd gen Tacoma

Have a UpTop Overland roof rack on 4Runner. Stronger and have more confidence. Sherpa has only 2 mounting points in the factory holes. UpTop Overland has three secured mounting holes… much stronger. Rubber blocks will degrade over time, that’s just science, good Automotive RTV silicone with rubber better. 4:11
