Really nice to watch these old films and forget about the modern world for a while. So many strange looks and little red herrings... good movie.
Watson mumbling to himself---"Less ostentatious? [Harrumph]. It's bigger than a duck's eqq". Love the way Nigel Bruce's Watson mumbles occasionally.
Films today are all action and no acting. Such a pleasure to sit and enjoy true acting and how the the actors dialogue is so clear and prosaic. Watch the Sherlock series with two of the very best actors ever to portray Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson no others have ever come near to portraying the characters as well as Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce enjoy watching the films over and over again.

I read recently that in 1967 they wanted Basil Rathbone to make a new Sherlock Holmes movie but he refused because Nigel Bruce had already died and he didn’t want to make a new movie without him as Dr. Watson.❤

I loved staying up late on Friday night with my brothers watching old Sherlock Holmes movies.
The BBC used to put Sherlock Holmes films on tv in the 80's. Used to watch them after coming home from school on Fridays.

It was the late seventies as I remember ..... yes, they were riveting.
Been watching Sherlock Holmes for a long time and reading the books about Sherlock Holmes and Watson
My older brother introduced me to these movies in the early 1970s. Sadly, he's been gone for years, and I'm still watching the damn things and remembering him.

Small details like one where the door is heavy under air pressure from moving train, when Holmes is strugling to get back in is why this is better than some newer movies.

You are so right to notice that this movie is all filmed on a train! Now, to see one mostly filmed on a steamliner, look up, "Pursuit To Algiers." It has one of the most intriguing storylines I've ever seen.

I beg to differ. Jeremy Brett nails it right on the head even more neatly than Rathbone... who remains of course a historical face for Holmes, certainly.
The best duo to play Sherlock Holmes and Watson is unquestionably Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. And never does an authentic law officer hold a gun on any individual in the manner portrayed in movies, he would immediately be disarmed. And whoever it was that played the part of Vivienne Vetter is, or was, a drop- dead gorgeous lady. This whole episode reminded me of an Agatha Christie novel or the game of Clue, - a board-game no doubt long since gone. Moran's plot was a very good one; it was unfortunate for him that Holmes took this case, I've very little doubt that anyone else would not have discovered the ploy and Moran would have been successful. Going by train is an interesting way or mode of travel. Moving about is exactly like that; so many sardines always trying to get around one another. If you decide to do the same, I would strongly suggest you pay a little extra for a sleeping arrangement, either a car or a bunk at least. And don't get drunk, you will regret it. Mrs. Carstairs was odd, it was true that she cared much more for that stupid rock than the murder of her own son.
@theresabromar5415
10 ай бұрын
Yes, she hardly showed any regret over the murder of her son. And, oh, by the way, I really liked that fellow... his manner of speech was unique.
For me these movies from 1942 to 1946 are absolutely fantastic. Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce and Roy William Neill gave Sherlock Holmes new life. PS. This movie is from 1946 not 1933.

Would that have been in a rotation with Abbott and Costello films, Ma and Pa Kettle films, Bowery Boys films, Godzilla films, 50's sci-fi movies, and maybe the Marx Brothers. A local station in my hometown used to play all those on Saturdays between about Noon and 5.
The casting is amazing on the women's part. Wish these women existed today.
Just love these old movies..thanks again ❤❤🇺🇸
Great classic I still watch them today as I did 40 years ago ❤
❤ 😊🇬🇧 WRT. the previous comment about modern films having hundreds of millions thrown at them to no great effect. You have to appreciate the skill of the men and women who made up the set designers, costumiers, the lighting, makeup, especially the music, the sound engineeers that, with a half sober director, together, could create amazing atmosphere from relativly primitive kit. Combined with perfect casting and killer source material...never bettered, superb.
Awesome film, thank you Feature Film for uploading, I appreciate it!
Ah,Sir Basil,..you are my dream man.
46:12 - That's Skelton Knaggs. He's about 34 here, believe it or not - alcoholism did a number on him. He was in 2 Dick Tracy movies in the same time period; one as a jewel cutter, and one as a getaway driver to a bank robbery. He died in 1955, at the age of 43.

fun thing about the Holmes movies with some exceptions they use the same actors just in different roles with the exception af Holmes,.Watson and Lestrade
@kentvesser9484

That was common at Universal and other B movie studios during this era. You had a stable of contracted actors that were just assigned to films. Sometimes they might be loaned out to another studio, but often they were kept pretty busy going from one movie to the next playing a small part for a day and then the next day they would be at a different movie set.
excellence from a bygone era. has nobody noticed how beautiful Renee Godfrey (Vedder) was ?
Rathbone is the best Sherlock Holmes . Bruce was awesome as Watson .

The Terror by Night Movie was made in 1946, not in 1933 as you state, the Universal Sherlock Holmes series of Movies was produced between 1939 and 1946. A movie of a similar name was made in 1933 called Night of Terror. It was not a Sherlock Holmes movie but an early low-budget horror starring Bela Lugosi produced by Columbia Pictures.
