Excellent episode, one of my favourite Holmes stories. I wonder though why the producers felt it necessary to alter the story? In Conan Doyle's original, Holmes keeps Colonel Ross in the dark until after the race and only reveals Silver Blaze in the winners' enclosure.

Following is a quote from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's autobiography, "Memories and Adventures," perhaps the producers wished to be a bit more realistic in their portrayal. "I have never been a racing man, and yet I ventured to write 'Silver Blaze,' in which the mystery depends upon the laws of training and racing. The story is all right, and Holmes may have been at the top of his form, but my ignorance cries aloud to heaven. I read an excellent and very damaging criticism of the story in some sporting paper, written clearly by a man who did know, in which he explained the exact penalties which would come upon everyone concerned if they had acted as I described. Half would have been in jail, and the other half warned off the turf forever. However, I have never been nervous about details, and one must be masterful sometimes."

This is the short story where Holmes makes the world-famous comment about the curious incident of the dog in the night-time :-) But I have never come across his equally famous remark (about the depth the parsley sank into the butter on a hot day) anywhere in the canon. Can anyone help me with the source?

4:10 A bit too melodramatic for me, especially with the "We're off...haah!" It would seem that J. Brett found more eccentricities than are written of in the stories; more Brett than Holmes, I think. But the series, in general, are splendid: great period sets, costumes, acting, and directing. And both Watsons who appeared in this series, especially David Burke, were terrific. Edward Hardwicke, the one here, is also excellent.

I think Brett's interpretation is spot on. All actors must bring some interpretation to the role, BTW. Having read the stories, I find Brett to be most accurate to the Holmes I envisage while reading Doyle.

Ronnie Moore, I did not like Jeremy Brett at all as Holmes right at the start. Like you, I thought he was far too theatrical. But I have to admit that he grows on you. Now I hugely enjoy all his looks, gestures, sudden shouts, throwing newspapers about, etc. The Holmes in the canon is much less exuberant, I agree, but Brett is definitely my favourite Holmes. And David Burke is my favourite Watson, it's such a pity he couldn't stay to finish the whole series. I like Ed. Hardwicke, he interprets Watson as a thoroughly nice chap, but he's a bit old for the role and he lacks David's sparkle and roguish charm.
