Burt probably didn’t know the Buford was coming to crash the party. This is great improvisation at it’s finest. Jackie Gleason didn’t have scripted lines in the the 3 Smokey and the Bandit movies. These movies were prove that you don’t need a script. As Gold Hat said in the “Treasures of the Sierra Madre”…”Badges? We ain’t got no badges. We don’t need no badges. I don’t have to show you any stinkin’ badges!”

I read on IMDB that Jackie Gleason was first cast as the sheriff, just by himself. He convinced the producers (and Burt Reynolds) that his style of comedy needed a straight man to play off, and so they wrote his dingbat son into the script, just for Jackie.

In the Navy, after refueling from a support ship, the receiving combatant pulls away at a high speed and usually had a "break-away" song that is played over the ship's 1MC (ship-wide loudspeaker). Our Skipper would order up flank speed and as we pulled away from the supply ship we'd blast out "East Bound and Down"! Awesome; we loved it!

These movies came out when I was a kid. Didn't get to see them until adulthood...but it was worth the wait. Burt Reynolds and Jackie Gleason just made this whole Sheriff/Bandit relationship so memorable that decades later, we're still watching and enjoying it. Well done, gentlemen. You're gone, yes...but you are far, far from forgotten....

What a great tribute to Burt Reynolds to have the great one "Jackie Gleason" come in and pull that off unexpectedly! What a great movie "Smokey and the Bandit" was!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Talk about offended. Imagine Don Rickles at one of the Dean Martin roasts. Those day's a joke was a joke. No one got offended. Now as for Burt. I remember when he was king of the box office. And those bandit movies. Those were good times. Burts laugh used to crack up the whole theater. Man in the 70s we had great actor's, movies, music, fast cars hot chicks. We had it all. ☮️✌️🕊️🤟

You can add the Cannonball Movies to that list. Especially the banter between Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.
