Shepherds Pie Recipe: How to Make Shepherd's Pie or Cottage Pie

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I demonstrate my easy shepherd's pie recipe. Shepherds pie is a classic British recipe,. It's simple to make, really tasty, and if you use beef mince instead of lamb mince, it makes Cottage Pie. I'm not claiming mine is the best shepherd's pie, but it's certainly very good! So if you want to learn how to make shepherds pie, then follow my simple recipe, and you'll have a perfect pie, every time.
Shepherds Pie is one of the classic of British cuisine. It's been around for over 200 years, and it's perfect for a cold winter's day. Shepherds pie is very simple to make - a rich meaty sauce topped with mashed potato and cheese, finished off in the oven. Traditionally, Shepherds pie is made with lamb mince, while its close cousin Cottage Pie is made with beef mince.

I clicked on the recipe and it doesn't call for Rosemary. My husband is from Scotland and I've been trying different recipes that he loves in his home land but so far I'm not having much luck finding any that he likes or that imitates his homeland food. I love watching your videos.

Keefe. Your recipe has sparked my taste buds up. Shepherds pie tonight . Because lamb isn't readily available at the market here in Thailand, I'll be using minced pork and maybe chicken, camouflaged with beef stock and OXO, for colour. Plus, a splash of of not to be mentioned, Thai copycat Worcestershire 'rockin orse'. Needs be and all that. I'll call it 'Farmers Mystery Pie.' My Thai family won't know the difference. I'm still knocking out your Cumberland sausage recipe. Sparked up with chili to suit the Thai palate. The kids and I love them. Thanks. Keep the videos coming

Ey up, Keef our goer! Aye, that shepherd's pie looks proper tasty, mate. Can't beat a good ol' British classic like that, especially when it's made wi' lamb mince. Love how simple and straightforward your recipe is. Perfect for a cold winter's day. The way you explained everything made it dead easy to follow along. I reckon I'll be givin' this a go meself this weekend. The missus and kids will be chuffed to bits! Keep up the great work, lad. Proper Yorkshire gold, this! Cheers!

Hi the 1st time i made this recipe. I gave my mom some, and she let 1 of my sisters taste it... 3 days later. I was asked to make it again, for a sunday dinner... Didn't realize my mom had invited some of my other sister's over to her house to eat some as well... O my GOODNESS. I made a BIG pan & it was gone in no time... After that day my family wanted me to make it at family gatherings. I LOVE this dish! I usually make it with ground beef. This time im gonna make it with ground lamb... I LOVE lamb so i know im going to shepherd's pie this way too...Thanks for sharing. 😊

Definitely right about everyone having their own take on it. My grandmother was from Scotland (Glasgow) and did use garlic in her shepherd's/cottage pie, didn't use any veg except creamed corn (not counting the potatoes), used Bisto in the filling, and didn't use cheese but put bits of butter on top.

NZ Shepards pie Grab a joint of lamb or hogget or Mutton, cook yourself a flash as Sunday roast , next day cut all the left over meat off the bone , make a couple of meat and pickle sandwiches for lunch , them mince up the remainder of the cold meat and throw it in a shepards pie. you will never look back at using raw mince again.

I take it back. I just looked at the menus of these places and the thing they call shepherds pie has beef. So I can get an improperly labeled cottage pie. There is only one place that uses lamb and they still mix it with beef. I'm kind of wishing for a proper British restaurant here.

I'm still getting to grips with the mid-roll ads thing. If YT throws in a video ad (as they have done on some of my other long vids) then it works fine with the static image bracketing the ad. But what's happening right now is they're using a banner ad, which pops up where it should, but then persists until you close it. I don't know if I can specify that they should only use a video ad in the position, but I'll check. Patreon doesn't have a one-off option, but I have that on my website: www.keefcooks.com/donate.php

  • @Keefcooks

Hello matey! I always preferred to buy mince from my butcher in Spain, who always minced it from actual meat while I waited and watched - also Spanish supermarket mince was dreadful. Nowadays, we don't have a proper butcher in our village, so I get it from Tesco's or Aldi, and it's not bad. I don't mind 20% fat. If you're confident that butcher is using named meat, then go for it!

It really does! although from what I can see in this video I'd say your knife probably needs a proper sharpening with a whetstone, this should help a little :) A word of warning though: having a really sharp knife is very addictive, I'm tempted to sharpen mine all the time but I have to resist the urge so as to not wear it down too fast. If you do end up sharpening it or getting it sharpened, make sure to read up a little or watch a few videos on knife skills on youtube, people tend to cut themselves a lot when switching from a dull knife to a really sharp one because of the bad habits they've developed. Once you get the proper technique though, cooking with a sharp knife is SO much nicer!

I usually use Henderson's Relish - it tastes very similar to Worcester Sauce, but doesn't contain anchovies or fish sauce. But it's generally only available in Yorkshire which probably isn't much help to you. It's not an essential ingredient, just adds a bit of zing.

My shepherds pie recipe has always been beef, sauteed with onions, topped with a layer of corn, followed by a layer of mash potato, then baked a bit to brown up the potatoes a bit. As you say, everyone has their own version! I'm going to give your version a go next time around, but since corn will be in-season in the next month or so here in the New England region of the US, I'll probably swap out the peas for fresh corn. And I'll slurp as many times as I want on my spoon, Lady-From-California!

I think I'll also try making Shepherds Pie using chicken. I'd probably start with something like a chicken fricasse base, but add some lemon and capers to it (I LOVE chicken picatta). Not really sure how the mash potato would go; may be too much moisture. Perhaps a biscuit crust? I know the word "biscuit" is used differently between the US and GB; I'm referring to a dough that is rather like an unsweetened scone. Possibly try parmesan cheese rather than cheddar as I rather like the way parm. and lemon go together.

Make a Fran pie, also known as a stupid pie" and went on to suggest I stick my head in an oven. Quite a shining example of British wit, that. The Bard would be so very proud. {sigh} Pity. im glad, he mentioned there was a difference with cottage pie , and a shepherds pie, and thats difference between blueberry pie, and apple pie, but the way he makes it, it looks really sloppy, either pie should be more of a gravy mix then a sloppy joe, just by his knife skills i can tell he's not a real cook or chef. adding salt during a reduction can make your dish saltier if your not careful. adding salt near the end of the cooking process will make it less likely to have problems finishing the dish off. if he used his cubing technic in most kitchens would get him fired, ( look up cubing carrots and knife skills 101 ) . if your knife skills are as good as his, safe your self the bother and buy the frozen peas and carrots you'll save yourself a lot of time. the reason for the two types of pies i beleive is one is more expensive then the other to make, and at one time very likely they were reversed in cost.

I can tell from your lack of capital letters and general sentence structure that your mastery of written English is poor. Yet you wrote a comment and I was able to get the gist of it. In the same way, I know my knife skills are crap but I don't let that stop me from doing what I love. 'He' doesn't claim to be a 'real' cook or chef (I presume by 'real' you mean 'trained professional'), has never worked in a professional kitchen and has zero desire to do so. I try to make cooking accessible for average people, and entertaining too.

  • @gr8witenorth61

very cute, attack my sentence structure, this is the internet not the new york times, i assure you i have seen far worse comments on other recipes that made less sense than your ablity to entertain, like your attempt at long eggs, that was entertaining.( maybe stop at the whites and add the yokes in raw and let the cooking process do the rest, like that of proper scotch egg, nice and runny). i have had shepherds pie and cottage pie in some of the best and lowest places in canada. although canada may not be british enough for you, we still follow british formats and traditions in this country, the tradition of this dish is everything. do you do a faggots and mash or is that too p.c. for you? now there's a traditional english dish, and learning about the seasoning for that "is" important, along with being able to find the wrapping that goes along with it. (i believe its the lining of a cows stomach, known as "tripe")

It’s called Scottish Sheppard’s Pie not British. It existed in Scotland where the primary location of all thenSheppards were hence the famous Scottish wool jumpers, sweaters, lamb, mutton, kilts... when Scotland was its own country long before it was forced to become part. Of England and Great Britain.

Oh dear. It's called Shepherds Pie, not Scottish or British. I've not come across any references to it being Scottish in origin, and we've always had plenty of sheep here in the North of England. Scotland is not part of England, but it is, and always will be, part of Great Britain which is simply the name of the island we share. I dare say Scotland will regain its independence, and I wish it well.
