Grew up in Charleston and started skateboarding when I was 11 (1991). Shepard was at RISD at that time. Anyone who knew him, they knew about the stickers. I used to write to him and get stickers for a crazy cheap amount him. I think it was something like 5-10 cents per sticker. I also bought his first t-shirt, way before it was Obey. I think the brand was called Alternate Graphics. These stickers where everywhere in Charleston, due to me and my skate crew putting up them all over town from around 1991-1995. Continued skateboarding into my mid 20’s, but stopped putting up those stickers when I was 14/15. Having known Shepard Fairey, this video is very nostalgic for me. Honestly, this is a really helpful video. My only question is how he is able to openly talk about it without getting arrested.
He is such a fucking badass. huge inspiration.
I memba seeing the andre the giant face near Brooklyn banks in like 98 - 99 n being like wtf is this all about I didnt know if it was a skate company or a graff thing or what n they started popping up all over downtown near China town n near the o.g. graff shop near the village n I thought it was like a crew or something funny here I am in 2019 an just turned 38 n finally finding out what the deal was with the obey the giant gimmick ! I'm usually more of a old school graff kinda guy like marker tags n throwies n fills but always thought this stuff was dope n still do !

Every so often you can find remnants of the Andre sticker around Providence. The last one I saw was on the transom above the door at the Coffee Exchange(Providence,RI).
That was one totally pristine, undercover street artist garage door.
haven't had anyone snort it yet

Met Sheperd in RI in 95 I think it was. Good buddy at time opened his first tattoo shop on Atwells Ave. we used to go out to all the bars and clubs. We were members at same private tap room at a pretty famous Rhode Island Brewhouse/Restaurant! Drank many pints of amazing craft beer there!! Believe he was going to school at RISD at time! Still have a few of the old OG “OBEY” Giant Stickers!
Obey! Thank you for making our life more interesting and bearable
