Shenmue Dojo Show: Yu Suzuki Shenmue Interview May 2024 Discussion (S4:EP4)

Ойындар

Hello and welcome to this very special Shenmue Dojo Show! Since we have just published an exclusive, huge face to face Shenmue interview with the man himself, Yu Suzuki - shenmuedojo.com/yu-suzuki-she..., we decided it would be fitting to discuss what this day was actually like, the questions asked and the answers given, and what happened after the interview!
Forum Discussion: www.shenmuedojo.com/forum/ind...
This interview was conducted by Shenmue Dojo co-owner James Brown (SkillJim), and also Switch from PhantomRiverStone.com. Joel Tess provided interpretation of both the questions and answers for Yu Suzuki. Many thanks to both of them for the incredible hospitality and allowing us the time to get through almost all of our questions. We hope that you enjoy this deep dive and discussion.

Great podcast. The Yu Zuzuki interview was amazing. You were so fortunate, but deservingly so. Especially loved the photo montage from your trip. My trip to Yokosuka last November was at dusk so it was much colder and darker. Really interesting to see the sights and sounds in sunlight. No Shenmue related goodies to buy on Dobuita St, but i did pick up some Yokosuka T-shirts and patches from the Fuji clothes store. You missed Tom's snack bar (in reality its more of a cafe less of a street stall). I skipped the big temple as there were people making their daily pilgrimages and i didn't want to get in the way as some filthy tourist. Met a fellow Shenmue fan at the bottom of those temple steps though. Hi to Enrique (not Iglesias) from Spain. Walked the area together chatting about the game and caught the train back to Yokohama. Thanks for the company Enrique (hope you found your train ticket eventually). Can't wait to go back and revisit at a better time of day. If only the journey from the UK wasn't so long. Still worth it.

I was so eager to read that interview, I neglected work for that time. It was certainly an enlightening read! There were aspects that were disappointing (I always imagined/hoped Shenmue IV was currently well into development), but it's encouraging to know there are interested partners. I'm also impressed how much Suzuki was able to respond to the story-related questions, as well. Some story beats I thought might happen one way, I was completely off on.

Yesterday I looked at the program of the creation of the game, which was shown on Japanese TV in 99, and it impressed me greatly. I tried to remember what life was like then. My gaming experience when did not exceed the games of Sega's like MK3 and the first arcade machines that appeared in Russia. It’s a pity that outside of Japan, few people knew about Shenmue, even my karate coach, who took exams in Japan to Abe. I hope that we will have time to see the 4th part and it will return an expanded or original combat system, as it was back in parts 1-2, and interaction with objects will become more modern, in 1 click insted of 5 steps, big street will filled with people who do not disappear 10 meters from you and I would like dialogues to be more varied and meaningful, not forced like after leaving the house in part 3. At least they can be different and not always turn on according to the script, when npc are busy with different things. As for the rest, if we talk about graphics or global illumination, it can be on existing level; this is probably not as important as faces style, good animations, mimics, simple interaction with objects, fights and the reaction of opponents in the fight. And let's be honest, quests like bring me wine 5 times aren't the most interesting things we've seen in games over the past 30 years. I really like Shenmue, this why i wish you success and creating something innovative once again, but matured with fan input that has likely already been explored.

P.S. And obviously, being immediately forced to walk in special places or having to take off your shoes with a separate cutscene is not a technical problem to avoid the loading zone, it emphasizes the peculiarity of the culture and mentality of the Japanese, their respect for special places or the importance of specific moments in everyday life. These bows make them who they are, special. Outside of Japan, in real life, you can see that everyone who enters or leaves a gym where people practice martial arts such as karate, everyone is sure to take off their shoes and bow. This Japanese tradition is as natural as the fact that liquid water is moist and mobile. Yes, removing shoes could be implemented in the form of real-time animation, but it would be wrong to interrupt it in the middle of the process, because this guy is consistent in everything, he was raised that way. Running in the wrong places could be marked by some unexpected reaction from the surrounding NPCs or a remark after a 10-fold sprint or jump, but this again goes against his spirit, he will not violate this centuries-old way of life and behave like a drunken tourist, he is 100 % Japanese, these aspects cannot be removed. I am not a historian, not a cultural scientist, but this understanding arose naturally for me, so if I am wrong, please correct me.

Having Niaowu on the scroll tells us which direction of the river to follow from Bailu towards the cliffs. This is a good way to keep it secret and also preserve it so it's not lost forever.

What made Shenmue 1 great was the ability to walk around 1980's Japan. Shenmue 3 has you exploring rural China...Not quite the lift Shenmue 1 was. Would have been great if it took place in 1980's Las Vegas as the series was eventually going to go there.

@@ShenmueDojoVOD i understand the etiquette of the interview and needing the conduct one self with poise as an interviewer, but im speaking as apart of the frustrated fan. his answers as far as making Shenmue 4 were vague imo. i know you couldnt interrogate the man, nor is it necessary lol, but I would've liked to hear him say "we have problems with sega, we dont have the money, an issue with demand , or even its not a high priority...etc". We're looking for a partner is super vague and you guys even made a whole video trying to decipher his answers. that said, I appreciate and much praise to ALL the work and content you provide in keeping the series alive. @coolraul510 Absolutely take the point made. He has to be careful. If he goes off on SEGA they may tell him he can't use the license anymore and then we would be royally screwed. If there's a deal signed (I don't think there is) then it'll be under NDA until it is ready. The way it seems is that there's interest and a gap between what he wants and what's on offer. So it is money. Whether they can find a middle ground? I'm not sure. But if we continue to make the noise we are then there's a chance something could happen.
