Sheltering From a Storm in an Old Prospector's Cabin in the Mountains of Death Valley
Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #626
Date of adventure: 4/11/22
Exploring an old prospector's cabin site, hidden in a beautiful canyon way up in the mountains of Death Valley. The weather was really nasty, so it was the perfect opportunity to hunker down, make some hot cocoa, and read a very interesting story in the visitor's book while I waited for the skies to clear.

NOTHING BEATS SMOKING A HOOT AND WATCHING WONDERHUSSY. ROFLMAO JUST ABOUT LOST MY MIND WITH "UMMMMM THATS GOOD EATIN" .
My dad had the mine next to the Manson clan's place. And I remember passing them on the dirt road when I was a very little boy. And I remember how my dad jumped out of his chair after the arrest, pointing at the TV and yelling "That's Charlie". Thanks for your videos:)

It is a national network-grade music intro. Like it alot.
Emett Harder is a friend and fellow miner, blaster and author. He lives in Devore, Ca and stays active. He has interesting stories about his inter action with the Manson Family when they were living at Barker ranch. I'll tell him you were at his mill site, and did a vidio.
You can not trust a drunk.Enjoy your videos.
Emmett's place, has some great books available. He built the cabin and knew Manson. Mrs Harder used to run the Panamint Breeze monthly newsletter. I stayed there for a few days in 2020. Nice and peaceful that trip. I left all the food that's seen in the video. That woodstove is awesome!!

Other than the bullet holes, that bus resembles the one Chris McCandless was found dead in after he starved to death on the edge of Denali National Park in the mid 90s.
The 'bread' font made me think of the band too. Mike

I find that scotch improves the quality of water, especially when you use water sparingly. 👍
Is that the Manson bus ? You know, during interviews one of the girls was asked how Charlie got that bus over Mengel pass and she said they were all high on acid, but ‘Charlie didn’t drive it in, he FLEW it in !’ [ Helter Skelter ] You’re right, Emmett C Harder was an author and he did in fact spend time at Barker Ranch with the Manson clan. Prolific posts this week !

I am a woman traveler and I have had this situation happen and I did let them stay, however, it was a group of researchers who were not drunk, did not have guns, and came up during the day. There is no way (in hell) that I would let these guys in drunk at night with guns. These guys would have met the barrel of my own! They are lucky all she did was call the rangers 👍

Since my Grandfather had to travel away from home a lot (he was a road construction foreman), he had gotten an old school bus and turned it into a motor home so that he didn't have to stay in motels. That was the absolute best motor home I've ever seen lol. A lot of good memories were made with that vehicle. 🤗🤗🤗
I had an incident two years ago kinda like the one you read. I arrived at a fairly popular cabin on a Monday morning in hopes of finding it unoccupied for a mid week stay. I put up the flag and moved in. Later that afternoon I heard a bunch of vehicles outside. Three trucks, six people. A couple of them came up to the cabin door, knocked, and asked how long I was planning to stay. I told them 3 possibly 4 days. They then proceeded to drive down a couple of hundred yards below the cabin and set up camp. They started drinking and partying which at first was OK but then the guns came out. They started doing target practice across the canyon with full automatic and semi auto weapons. I always carry a pistol on my trips but I don't make a habit of shooting off rounds, only there if absolutely necessary. Next morning they started in again. It was just intimidation. Later that morning one of them came up again and asked when I was going to leave. I stayed one more night just for the principle of it then left early on a Wed morning. This also happened a week before Thanksgiving. The thing was a half a dozen other vehicles drove up during the two days I was there, saw the flag up, respected it and left me alone....

I'll bet you know my good friend Guy Starbuck... That was a Panelray Propane Heater in the bus. And yes they made a camper out of this bus or they were making it. Emmet Harder was a DV explorer and wrote the book "These Canyons Are Full Of Ghosts'... A must read for any DV enthusiast.
That racket from the Corrogated iron roof at night would be something special lol😂👍
Becarefull of the high winds in DV. In taking the DV route to Trona in the early 70s, a wind storm blew in black out driving conditions. Which brought traffic to a halt except for the brave few like myself. It was down around the dunes which was the worst. You could barely see the road, covered with sand. Cars that parked on the rd were a real danger, with sand piling up mid door height. It was so dusty inside of a closed car I was wearing a bandana around the face. Only able to creep along at 5-10 mph for 1.5 hrs. When I finllya hot out of my car, I saw the real damage. The sand had blaster away areas of the vinyl roof and the paint has been sandblasted off the sides of the car. My band new rims also had a different look. And my windows were frosted over by the sands. All needing to be replaced. When the insurance adjuster saw the damage he asked "couldn't you have gotten an accident son?" he wanted to total my car out from a sand storm So beware of those high winds around the Dunes Kid's
I had no idea there were so many interesting places in Death Valley. No one does it better than you 👍You intrigue me to take a few days and go for a drive through the desert.
I love wind in the desert. That is the kind of thing that can make me stay up all night long to listen to it and sit outside in it while nursing a cold beer. One of my favorite places is the Lodge At Summer Lake in eastern Oregon. It is a lodge/restaurant combo out by the Summer Lake National Wildlife refuge. Every night, the wind comes down off of Winter Rim, a long two- or three-thousand-foot-high escarpment behind the Lodge like a hurricane. The huge old willows and cottonwoods around the lodge whip about crazily while coyotes sing in the distant darkness and the moon blazes down out of a sky that seems almost white with stars. As for the two dudes with shotguns, I agree with you entirely. No matter how inconvenienced you may feel, the right thing to do is just accept that someone else got there first and go away. I thought everyone knew that you cannot bring firearms into a National Park, but I guess some folks are a bit denser than others.
dang gum good times, at stories with Sara Jane a cup of hot cocoa, with hot sauce, and a whole lot of yarn spinning! thank you ALL stay safe
If we ever meet in person I’ll tell you a very cool Manson story as told by my grandmother that occurred at the store in Cantil (jawbone canyon store)
Cocoa in a cozy cabin and story time - you nailed it!
Paused video, made cup of joe and enjoyed story, and the way you told it, very much! Love the way you edit your videos! The voices in that short mysterious phone call was a riot!
Finally I beat Wonderhussy to a location.
M715 is a 1 1/4-ton 4x4 military pickup truck made by Kaiser Jeep. I was disappointed you didn't show the front of the bus. Such a view would allow us to know the maker and it's approximate year.
My two sons and I were just in Butte Valley and braved the sand storms at Stovepipe Wells, riding our dual sport bikes leaning into the wind. We stayed at Mesquite Springs and then moved to Texas Springs for the remainder of our stay. It was always a great feeling to return to the camper after two nights venturing out ,sleeping in tents. Having a place to cook meals, take showers, and sleep on a real bed. We had such a wonderful time this year and look forward to doing it again. I always enjoy your videos because when I was young my family went to Death Valley for Christmas from Oregon on a regular basis. Thanks.
Happy 420 to you Miss Sarah, and to everyone watching.

A couple of drunk dudes with weapons show up in the middle of the night to a remote cabin in the mountains. Sounds like your typical Sam Peckinpah plot. Those usual end in a hail of gun fire and blood spurting out in slow motion.

As soon as I heard, "Barker Ranch", I could hear Neil Young singing, " oh to live on ,Sugar Mountain, with the Barker's and the colored balloons, you can't be twenty on Sugar Mountain..."
I couldn't stop giggling all through this video, so when you said pour hot cocoa, I poured Jack Daniels instead and when you showed the final pin in the atlas card in the log book I burst out laughing!!!!!!
Every time I watch your videos I make it a drinking game.. every time you say " Apparently" .. I take a shot.. I can say that by the end of the video.. I'm feelin no pain ... lol
Hi Sarah I love when you go in structures very interesting places .stay safe
DuPont made explosives! For those old enuff to remember, You would wire a stick of dynamite to a cedar shingle, light the fuse and throw it into the water, if there was a lake nearby and the dead Fish would float to the top and you had your dinner ready to cook. It was called a Dupont spinner!
Always wonder why I watch you, but somehow you capture the wandering spirit. Thanks for the adventure.

I am not an art collector, but I would take a piece of those gun-shot walls for my own, if I could. In his final years, William Burroughs made pictures of his shot gun paintings of paint on plywood. "Gather ye rosebuds, while ye may." Hell yeah.
