~looks at my shelob decklist~ No no, he’s got a point. My favorite card in it for making stuff fight is boxing ring. Send out a random spider give it 8 boxing gloves and a pat on the abdomen you got this. Also just being able to make a token to deal with all the other token creatures is nice. The one thing I hate is that it forces us to pay attention to every single food token we make. I’ll hit a dozen fliers with silklash spider and then I have a ton of food tokens of creatures that I sorta know what it does but I’m always gonna miss triggers if I play this with actual cards and not just on arena. I love when I can solo out a few creatures and use them to my advantage. I’ve gotten some hilarious combos because of it. But it is one of the decks that just says “I don’t want my friends to have fun” and “I want my turn to last 20x longer than everyone else’s”

No, read it again: it doesn't care about OTHER spiders in your deck. It wants to fight your other creatures so it can turn them into noncreature artifacts where you can still access their activated, triggered, and static abilities! The only other spider you even need is a Silklash Spider to control the skies!

That's actually the canon look to her character surprisingly, she's got a story like Medusa but is able to either cast an illusion to look like her old self or actually just shapeshift. I don't remember exactly which it was

Shelob really needs an 'oops, all bugs' set to drop in order to really get some sauce going tbh, since as is she's basically delegated to running a fight club full of spider-man cosplayers as there... really aren't enough good ways to get spiders onto the battlefield otherwise. For another weird little guy to roast, might I suggest Grolnok, the Omnivore? He's practically the living embodiment of 'we have gitrog at home'

I feel like reducing Grolnok to "Gitrog at home" is kinda unfair. They have different color identities, completely different playstyles, and Grolnok is actually pretty good in his own right even though he's not a combo machine like Gitrog. Really the only thing that links the two is that they're both frogs that eat people

However, Grolnok in-lore was spawned from one of Gitrog's eggs, and they're both 2-color frog commanders in green who use a form of graveyard recursion to give you lands and card advantage. The biggest difference the two have is that Grolnok cares about his little frog friends, wheras Gitrog is more than happy to eat trees every turn and whatever happens happens

I made a good token deck around this with spiders and changlings and it’s actually not bad

Also shout out to the artist for making her something that *looks* like a spider, but isnt. The book even describes her webs as not actually being webs, but darkness that sticks to you like webs.

And then it got instantly powercrept by Vraska, who is three mana, makes treasures, and overall serves as a middle finger to protect you while the rest of your Golgari value sludge comes online. Give Shelob trample. Let the spider step on people damn you

Vraska is still a sidegrade as she gives no blanket buffs (Shelob has tribal synergies that WORK) creates treasures (that aren't tokens, which is actually NOT that great) that can't immediately be popped and needs you to PAY for each one made.

We already have two different spins on First Strike Deathtouch in Golgari alone, to say not a word about Thalia and the Gitfucked Monster

It's the curse of typal commanders for bad types. The payoff they provide needs to be good enough to justify running all the bad pack filler creatures, but if they present enough potential value on their own, you're often better off just cutting all the garbage and replacing it with cards that enable the Commander as a standalone card.

​@@BioRose671my shelob deck runs multiple enchant land auras that make my lands tap for 2 mana instead of one as well as a lot of mana rocks. Shelob is slow so you have to get her on the field fast. She will also almost certainlg be removed immediately so you have to expect to recast her. Ove had games where ive had to cast her 4 times. You need very fast mana ramp and just a lot of mana in general woth shelob. Ive found vraska plainswalkers are great since ypur already running a ton of mana, ypu can cast most plainswalkers if you can cast shelob as the good ones arw around 6 mana. Lolth the spider queen is a must. Anything that spawns spider tokens. Maskwood nexus is handy for makong anything thats not a spider into a spider. Fight spells are necessaey as you opponent wont attack or block with their best creatures with shelob on the field. So you use fight spells to take their creature effects. Lure effects that force opponents to block shelob with all creatures able to do so can boardwipe someone. Carry cards that exile opponents creatures as the NUMBER 1 weakness of shelob is any creature with indestructible. Her wffects cannot get through them and you have to have removal for those creatures

I'm not sure whats meant by "power levels" but the likes of Azuza Eldrazi, Kinnan, Urza, Slicer ect would rinse that deck before she touched the table, even ramping. Say she hits the table, she's dead at conception or you're finding yourself with a 3/3 drake...

She's the secret sauce in the 99 of Thanatis, the warweaver. You're gonna be swinging a lot and feeding tons of spiders into your opponents boards, gets out of hand fast.

​@@snowboundwhale6860 Checks out. Same company that have Giant Solifuge and Haywire Mite as insects, even though mites and solifuges are arachnids, then created the mite type for 1 card and a token anyway.

My wife loves this deck. She threw a lot of strong stuff in it one of it being doors of destinies. She made quite strong even taking on my elf ball deck and dragon deck even a chaos deck called child of Alara

Have hope my brother in Vermin, it was a damn decade before I got support for Marrow Gnawer. I remember thinking Typhoid Rats was a staple. Eventually caved to changeling/shapeshifter fluff and aristocratic combos. Try something like bloodline pretender, changling titan, webweaver changeling, and maybe Phyrexian Obliterator if your focus is on forcing fights. Faceless Agent would let you tutor a spider, and maskwood nexus would make every thing a spider.

At least Rats had lots of options and somewhat of a cohesive mechanical theme. Besides what kind of support did we need? We had relentless rats, pestilence rat, plague of vermin, ratcatcher, and every nezumi. What more could you possibly need?

@@PhoenicopterusR ratcatcher is a very expensive tutor, and I’d say ogre slumlord is better 100% of the time. colony > relentless, most ninjutsu users can just be replaced with a colony in fact. Ink Eyes was good until they brought out Nashi, and even that card got phased out of my deck. Plague of Vermin is a okay plan B with Ayara, but without Mirkwood Bats coming out it would have been relegated to just that combo, and being a 7 cost card hurts when, fun fact, you should have won on turn 6. But it’s all good G, I know you’re trolling by including Pestilence Rats 🐀 but if you being serious I gotta say you probably don’t play rats. If you do though please replace that worthless card with Bloodline Pretender.

The rats are in there because it's a rats deck and they do rat things, simple as that. So I'll pass on that off-theme junk unless I have zero options. At least I'm playing actual rats.

But Shadow of War Shelob though.

In fairness, it invokes the Lazav problem of if you trust them to not shift to a more horrifying thing mid-coitus. Then again, some are into being a spider's bottom. Then again, seek help vigorously.

Wizards has to stop making amazing tribal commanders without first giving that tribe enough playable creatures to make a deck. Its the same problem with King/queen among bears. Crazy cool paired together but theres not enough bear support to make a tribal deck

For the bears I've always understood that the tribe is basically a meme and the king/queen both play into that meme. Honestly that might be why these things get to be so good: the actual creatures are a pile of draft chaff, so the commander gets to be extra juiced to make them halfway viable.

Ever since queen bear showed up I wanted to do bear tribal. And now with chonky king I'm doubling down. Just let me make a deck with Yogi and the boys and still be viable. That'd all I ask

Built the deck, really enjoy it but Shelob tends to do the fighting herself as the rest of the spiders mostly suck and die before she shows up. Like a mom that finally went “I’ll do it myself before I blow a fuse”

my Shelob lairs of death is a turbo fog deck, I basically play on my opponents turns. Shelob, child of ungoliant is in the 99. Opponents dont dare go near the spiders web.

My first deck I built for myself and beloved child! Shelob seems like it's possibly mid until you start giving her the slightest access to trample. I call the deck "Feed Me (Seymour"

Give em’ Unnatural Growth and +1/+1’s up the wazooo and we got a problem lol

Something fun not to many people consider with Shelob is eating your own non-spiders for etb and ltb effects on your foods. There's a few ways to cause some of your spiders to attack your own stuff and if you can get a little Graveyard recursion you can essentially bring back a great ltb effect and keep making foods to sac for health and an additional effect.

Well, the spiders don't have to kill. They just have to land a punch. So well timed thornbite staff effects are very useful.

Someone hasn’t seen Shadow of War. That spider can ABSOLUTELY get it

My spider commander deck is a spider mill deck. There are some changelings in there too. It's pretty funny sacrificing spiders for treasure tokens, or using them as deathtouch blockers and just bringing them back. Or using something like graverobber spider and a trample instant to do massive damage.

Don't you think for a moment that I miss that bender reference. You're a futurama nerd.

Green comes with so many "Target creature gains indestructible" or big enough buff spells that you can still have shelob ready for next turn after stealing the combo player's card draw

In Shelobs defense, she is a shapeshifter and does have a human form. She is a Primordial after all. Just be sure to be on her side and she wont feed you to her kin haha

I once had an opponent who went super wide use that white craterhoof behemoth that gives flying, forgot the name, but he didn't see I had the spider that could deal x damage to all fliers as an activated ability, so I just deathtouched his whole board for 1 and stole all his effects. So many food tokens.

So, did go up against this recently actually.... I was playing White Black Vampires and every time they tried to force a fight with one of my vampires that I didn't want them to get a copy of I would just toss it on Ashnod's Altar... Petty, maybe, but if I don't get to have my nice things, you don't get to have my nice things.

Ah, but you see, I just put Shelob into my Thantis deck and now she’s the support to another playable spider commander

Btw for the spiders who fight things you have spiders fight your own board and this can cause even more broken combos like: eternal witness a card back like a fight spell to kill eternal witness get a food copy that returns the original eternal witness. Or devoted druid but as a food token who can untap and tap for green infinitely. Remember changelings are spiders too and you don’t need 30 spiders to make shelob worth it as a commander.

I predict that Spiders is going to keep getting better and more fun.

It´s a huge spieder, but is one of the only spiders I saw without reach.

This deck is quite good. So many cards that can steal you a ton of stuff. Stats don't mater when the spider has death touch. And many values go out the window when you play academy manufacturer

What I've found is you need to LEAN into the Food aspect and have junk spiders to throw under things with Gyome Master Chef telling your spiders dying is gay

Yeah, I wanted a spider EDH deck ever since the Innistrad Green spider with a black activated ability. I just wish the creature type got some love.

Spiders are what got me into Magic back in 2013. Ever since, I have always tried to make spiders viable. Having Shelob on the field definitely scares people lol. My only issue is that insects started getting more support right after Shelob came out (I took apart my insects to make her, I didn't even get to try my Zask) and I don't want 2 similar Golgari decks...but I might-

We need a spider nest card or better yet a spider mother that just makes a bunch of baby spider tokens when it dies

Every spider is worth playing if you lower your standards enough

I built this deck and it's just like you say. Only difference being she is a 6 mana 8/8 commander with built in deathtouch and access to green. Just giving her trample means you need to block with 8 creatures to avoid commander damage, and then you pump her more. Or one of the equipment that makes the equipped creature deal 1 damage to anything that blocks. I built the former version however and instantly scrapped the deck when an angel gave my opponent and all their permanents protection from creatures and even if I did have tutors nothing in the deck could remove it because all the removal was creature based.
