I'm getting tired of the 70s music I grew up with and love your song in the intro of Atheist Experience. Love you voice and your message is more relevant to me as an atheist than so many of the god-drenched songs of earlier decades. Keep it up! And I love this song, so honest and clear.

  • @ShelleySegal

This particular song is about being told directly and indirectly by my family and religion that the person I loved wasn't the right person for me. This has happened to me many times and mostly because they weren't from the same tribe as me. That judgement and interference was so painful for me - it was one of the hardest times in my life as I felt that those parts of my life (family and my community) should celebrate love and amplify it, but instead they were tearing me down. This song is my expression of the pain of that situation but also standing up for myself, saying that I won't be told how to love, or who to love. They call that behaviour itself love but how could it be, it is just control. I hope that helps it make more sense, especially the chorus. "I can't love somebody like you, just because you want me to." That's why I filmed the video in a synogogue - similar to the one I grew up in. Despite being there my whole life I couldn't get married there, in the place where my grandparents and parents were married, because the person I loved was the wrong tribe. Even though I don't believe, that is an incredibly painful and hurtful rejection. That was part of why I had to leave. My cousin Angelina plays a young version of me in the song, (she choreographed her dance!) and I show her running away Thanks for asking :D

@@ShelleySegal You're welcome. I love your songs. My favourite is *"Saved".* I can relate to what you're talking about. Although I grew up in a non-religious household, I have family members who were *devoutly* religious, who would often tell me that I was a bad person, that unless I repent and accept Jesus Christ as my lord and saviour, that I was going to Hell, as if it was an unpleasant place for *"sinners"* to go when they refuse to apologise for their *"sins",* etc. Although I wasn't allowed to say it as a boy, I was like *"yeah, right!",* or *"that's bullshit!"* :)

@@ShelleySegal I'm *"bi-sexual",* meaning that I'm attracted to both men *and* women. I don't know why it's considered a *"sexual orientation",* since I see nothing sexual about my attraction to men and to women. I don't know what it is. But I was told by my religious family that any kind of attraction towards the same sex is considered a *"sin"* against *"God".* Even then, I thought it was bullshit.

@Marcus Lewis, The lyrics might've been slim, but I perceived it as almost like a mantra, and standing up for herself. Normally I can't stand "radio type" songs that just repeat stuff over n over but this wasn't like that. It's a message and a point being made, and ground being staked. I just discovered Shelley but this one is probably the most powerful one I've heard so far. The trauma that comes from family not accepting you or your lover runs deep in so many people. The family think they're doing what's best because that's what their religion tells them is best. In reality they are causing pain and pushing away their family. Keep expressing yourself Shelley! So many people can relate to what you have to say. Even if the lyrics are "slim". Slim but POTENT
