Man, unbelievable golf match/commercial/documentary/time capsule. This is the world I was born into, and it's really grievous that it's almost totally gone now. You don't have people or a pace of life like this anymore. Almost 60 years and the world has changed dramatically. (Long sigh.)

To your point, it seems that far too many people have used this access to so much knowledge merely to find better and better ways to confirm their biases.

This was the year that George Knudsen paired with Calgary's great Frank Fowler at the Canada Cup (after that the World Cup) played in Japan that November. Knudsen won the medalist in the tournament though the US Team of Arnold Palmer/Jack Nicklaus (ever heard of them?) won the important tourney. I used to caddy for Fowler in the sixties and he was one of the great drivers of the golf ball.

In August, 1965 I by chance was fortunate enough to be paired with Frank Fowler as his caddy in a new tournament called the Willow Park Classic at the inaugural Willow Park Golf and Country Club in Calgary, Alberta .I was 15. For the first 2 rounds Frank was paired with the great Al Mengert from Seattle. I remember how well Frank could drive the ball. He was short and a little stocky but could hit the ball a long way . He had a great swing and the ball 'bored' through the wind. In 54 holes he missed ONE fairway. Unfortunately he wedge play wasn't very good and putting was average. An icon of golf.

One area where the difference between today's pro's and those of this era is really apparent is in the short game. One the opening hole, Knudson hits a shot from just off the green to within about 15 feet and it's hailed as a fine shot. Today's players would most of the time put that within 6'. I think the emphasis on the short game today, and the amount of time players spend perfecting it, far surpasses what they used to do.

Yes, but there were pros of that time and even farther back in time that were short game wizards, bobby jones was one of them but he didn't have any weaknesses and you must realize the clubs and ball were inferior making it more difficult. Rough was taller, thicker and some course didn't rake bunkers or they raked them in furrows. I have video of bobby jones hitting bunker shots that he stepped on mashing them under the surface then he just blasted them out with a niblick, pretty much a nine iron.

My goodness, this is Golf Swing City. You can't help but be a better player by watching these two.

Gene Littler was my idol when I started playing . Great tempo which I tried to emulate and I still work on that today after many years of playing and practice. Served me well

My paternal grandpa, who was course-marshal at the local course, knew Gene. They used to call him Gene the Machine. Much obliged for the vid! Sure brings it all back. All I need to see now is a Hamm's Beer commercial with the Hamm's Bear.

My favorite swing of all time.

Thank you so much for uploading these. I started golf during Covid and just love Knudson’s swing. An older gentleman I golf with in the mornings told me about Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf and I have been going back watching them this off-season. This is what The Match should be. They even have shot-tracers of sorts. Amazing.

Shell gasoline in 1966: less than 36 CENTS a gallon! Titleist golf balls: $12 /dozen. Green Fees at Spyglass Hill GC in Pebble Beach: $15 a round. and on and on....no one believes me when I tell them of these things!

Here in 2020 prov 1 is $45/dozen that cheap! compare to 12/dozen back in 66.

I payed $15 at Spyglass, but that was twilight. The next day I paid $25, but I shot 80 from the very backs--still proud of that. Early 80s. Oh, when I was a very young lad, they had gas wars sometimes and my dad paid 19 cents per gallon once--1965.

Also the shots near the beginning of the middle-aged lady on the golf course all dressed up complete with handbag and hat, as though on a shopping trip to a high class city department store …. guess she must have been the wife of a high-ranking official of that golf club - keeping up appearances, so to speak 🤣

George did the same thing when he played AL Giebeger, on this show at the Royal Victoria Golf club, couldnt putt worth a dam. I'm sure if he had been an average putter he would have won 20 plus PGA events and few majors

Such great ball striking by George...really was a pity he made Hogan look like Crenshaw on the shorter putts. Those 4 to 8 footers are real killers for poor putters.

Does anyone know what their bag makeup looks like? As someone who loves playing classic clubs, would be awesome to look for some clubs played by these fine golfers back in the day.

Google Search "George Knudson Golf clubs" and it will give you some idea my friend.

We all know that George had a great swing but so did Gene. Very solid indeed with minimal hinge in the wrist but great width and rotation

George Knudson, premier ball striker on this show over Littler, but putts like 20 handicap. I doubt littler would have kissed the putts George did.

I often wonder just how many PGA tournaments George would have won if he was a good putter. Yea Littler wouldn't have missed some of those that's for sure. George was quoted in an interview "I try and hit every fairway, every green and try and 2 putt, never try and 1 putt." It's clear his mindset towards putting was the exact opposite of his long game. And it showed.

George Knudson, million dollar swing but 2 cent putter, if he could putted average for a PGA tour pro he would have easily won 20 tourneys

How could one with such a fluid, rhythmical swing as George, have such an awful putting stroke.

Two golf swings sweeter than honey and whipped cream. Gene Littlers swing resembles Louie Oosthuizens gorgeous swing now. I think Littlers swing actually is even more efficient a move than Louies. Knudson had everything in a player but a putter! In this match he resembled a four year old on a putt putt course. Even a decent putter would have shot four or five under par in this match. Knudsons mantra appeared to be "drive for show and putt for chump change." There is no doubt Knudsen would have been one of the all time greats without that rusty flat stick. Gene Sarazen could also be the rudest little turd you ever encountered. Sarazen won all four majors but I doubt he could strike a ball as sweetly as George Knudson. It's no wonder Knudson was on the shell series as often as he was. His swing should have been mounted on a museum wall.

Thanks for the comment.It's a good one. The more I read and watch about George, the more I realize he just didn't care about putting. The sweetest thing to him was swinging the club and sending the ball exactly where we wanted it to go. Which he accomplished much of the time. Take care

Sarazen was indeed a jerk some of these old timers had a highly inflated opinion of themselves, Jimmy Demaret was the better host and he loved George Knudson

I've come to thee conclusion that as somewhat of an Introvert but, due to this evolving nature of Pro Golf= GK was at the mercy of being forced to play all facets of Thyne Newveau Game of Golf...which unfortunately for His Innate Mannerisms included to many of its follies, The Dreadful Putt for Dough! Cuz GK obviously had zero wants of practice nor did He even care about its Prize Winnings +/- affects it influenced His Ultimate Journey thru Our Grand & Beluved Walk in Zee Parkette?! Lol He was downright terrible lol as Gene reminded Him of = 36 putts thru 18 Holes is BLASPHEMY within Thyne Realms of Pro Golf & It's Overlords lol Even His Driving from what I've watched/heard was akin to Seve'esk...It was His Masterful Art of the Swing & Subsequent contact with Clubhead/Ball that made Him Awe Inspiring to those who knew the true Ease of Difficulty held within Golf's Secret Lore's past down & learned thru hard work of practice.
