Jazak for your advice and good intentions, and the brothers who have answered in this thread. The issue of believing it is a religious requirement or at least a recommendation to cover one’s head in salah is a common misconception, understandably. I see you have presented some verses and Hadiths as evidence. The evidence you presented is well known to us and the traditional scholars of the 4 schools of thought. But none of them is evidence of covering the head during salah. The verse quoted ‘zeenah’ means ‘decoration, beautification, presentable’. All scholars agree that this means according to the customs of the land and community you live amongst. This ‘zeenah’ would be what is considered in day to day beautification for all men, Muslim and non-Muslims alike. For example, the head covering, turban and colours the prophet pbuh wore were a custom and norm of well-presented men in Arabia where he lived, and the evidence to that is that his kafir enemies such as Abu Jahl also practiced that exactly the same. Consider that the prophet pbuh also was seen wearing a Roman cloak and Persian cloak in Salah. Does this mean we should also buy Roman and Persian cloaks to wear in our Salah today and would it be considered a ‘zeenah’ or a ‘sunnah’ of the prophet pbuh? Obviously not, and no scholar I know said such a thing. This answers the Hadith evidence you presented ‘pray as you have seen me pray’, since he prayed with a Persians and Roman cloak we know that this is not what he meant. What is meant is the actions of the specific Salah, not the turban or how he dressed because his dress was inside and outside of Salah, not specific to Salah. Also, the prophet pbuh was in fact ‘seen’ without a head cover, as authentic Hadiths describe he used part his hair in the Centre. Furthermore, there is no textual evidence to suggest that we must or is recommended to cover our head in Salah or even outside of Salah for that matter, neither in the Quran nor Hadith. Many don’t know that the term ‘sunnah’ has 2 meanings, a shar’i meaning and a linguistic non-shar‘I meaning (scholars termed it legal and non-legal sunnah - sunnah tashri’iyyah and sunnah ghayr-tashri’iyyah). Legal sunnah is what Allah revealed or the prophet pbuh did out of the ‘religious practice’ as told us so or his companions indicated this or the scholars indicated this. Examples of non-legal Sunnahs is the prophet’s pbuh preferred food, preferred colour, preferred dress style, and covering his head. They are not connected to religious legislation or rewarded practice. Some scholars, such as in the Hanbali school which is what I studied, who said it is recommended to cover the head in general said so not out of a legal-sunnah but a non-legal sunnah based on the norms of the people’s practice, not applied to all and everyone in every place and community. Additionally, their opinion was just that, an opinion, not a ruling. You’ll find these differences of opinions a lot in madh-habs, depending on which one you follow, but it cannot be imposed onto others as you claimed. I do not usually cover my head because I do not live among a community or region where this is the norm, but rather it becomes a type of ‘standing out- Shuhra’ which is another discussion topic among traditional scholars, and which is a separate topic. And where I was is the UK, again not a custom nor a considered ‘zeenah’. May Allah guide us all on what is best and pleasing to Him, Ameen.

My dear beloved brother and great scholar of Islam. Assalamu aleikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu. We all believe that the best role model for humanity to copy in the way he cut his nails, wore his socks, wore his shoe’s etc. is Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him), being as a true lover of Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him), we better follow his teaching and lifestyle the way SAHABA and TABI’UN followed. The lifestyle of Owais Qarni (a Yemeni TABI’UN) is a good example that encourages us to love Prophet (peace be upon him) and his lifestyle though we have not seen him wearing black or white turban. The unique lifestyle of Owais Qarni and his intense love for the Prophet (peace be upon him) enabled him to be acknowledged by the Prophet (peace be upon him), although they never met in person. As a true lover of Prophet (peace be upon him) we must love Arabs and its customs for the sake of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). As the Prophet (peace be upon him) once said to Salman al-Farsi (r). “You will leave your religion and faith if you hate me.” Salman al-Farsi said, “How can I hate you? I sacrifice my mother and father for you, O Rasoolullah! Through you Allah has guided me, so how can I not love you?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, “If you don’t love the Arabs, you don’t love me.” 'Love the Arabs for three reasons: because I am an Arab, the Quran is in Arabic and the language of Jannah is Arabic'. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said “None of you will have faith till he loves me more than his father, his children and all mankind.” Abdullah ibn Hisham reported: We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he was holding the hand of Umar ibn al-Khattab. Umar said to him, “O Messenger of Allah, you are more beloved to me than everything but myself.” The Prophet said, “No, by the One in whose hand is my soul, until I am more beloved to you than yourself.” Umar said, “Indeed, I swear by Allah that you are more beloved to me now than myself.” The Prophet said, “Now you are right, O Umar.” Let’s forget what customs, culture our forefathers brought us, as of now let’s dress for prayer exactly how Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) dressed, to become Owais Qarni of our time.

@@user-cp4qp7lh2rdear brother, I don’t think you understood this matter correctly. Firstly, loving the prophet pbuh does mean to copy every single action of his unless it is a religious shar’i sunnah, otehwrise we would be speaking ill of many companions such as Khalid Ibn Al-Walid who are lizard meat in front of the prophet pbuh and invited him to eat but the prophet pbuh showed distaste to it and refused but continued to watch Khalid Ibn Walid eating. By the approach you have taken to prove that loving the prophet pbuh means copying every single act is saying the Khalid Ibn Al-Walid did not live the prophet pbuh enough to also say ‘if you do not lime lizard meat then out of love for you I will also not eat it even if I like it.’ Instead he continued eating in front of the prophet pbuh knowing this, yet this did not mean less love for the prophet pbuh. Personalities and ‘Urf عرف is something the prophet o u encouraged. As an example Ibn Hajar and as-Shatibi both clarified that there is no origin to the claim that covering the head in slab or outside of it to be a religious sunnah nor even mustahab, but a custom of the Arabs from ‘Urf. Loving the Arabs does not mean dressing like the Arabs, for the prophet pbuh also wore a Roman and Persian cloak, which I’ve already stated. Furthermore, the Hadith you quoted about Salman Al-Farosh raa is weak in its chain, although other Hadiths allude to it in a different wording. You are stating that if we do not wear a cap or turban then we lack in love for the messenger of Allah. Perhaps you are following specific teachings of Shafi’i school who believe it is recommended in salah and disliked not to. But to impose it on others and make it seem to be religious and follower of the prophet pbuh is to start wearing a cap or turban is misleading and making something the sunnah made wide very narrow.

@@belal.assaad My dear brother I am not a scholar, neither a follower Shafi’i school but a fan (lover) of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). For me the love with Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) lifestyle is more than my Afghani lifestyle and customs. As an Afghan Muslim, I love what Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) loved and hate what he hates. I understand that wearing a cap or covering one's head by a man for prayers is neither rejected nor obligatory, but Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) wore it and loved it while praying, therefore, we wear it and love it even today no matter if it is against our Afghani customs.
