Montage of 'then and now' photos of some places I have been in Sheffield.
All the modern photos are my own.
Most comparrisons don't match up EXACTLY, but are near enough.
Hope to be doing more soon.

The old stuff may have been difficult or dirty (I grew up in it) but the people had souls. The replacement is barren, depressing, architecturally dead and soul-less

In almost all the pictures the older ones look better. We're always hearing about lack of housing, but these pictures show locations where homes once stood are all too often waste land today. So very sad.

My sentiments too ... felt sad about the character of the old buildings and then seeing wasteland, as you said where homes were, church etc.

It's slightly depressing to see grand buildings just disappear. I see Sheffield every day and I clearly have no idea of it's history and heritage. I'm a southerner originally, but have lived in Sheffield longer than I've lived anywhere else. A very interesting video, thanks for posting it pal.

Thank you so much for showing the old Sheffield that I loved, but which has gone. Even so, I dearly wish that I did not have to leave. I could quite happily live in the new Sheffield.

I'm not old enough to remember what a beautiful looking place my city used to be, so thanks for these. I can only conclude that a high trust, indigenous society has been deliberately destroyed by the policies of our governmental system for decades

If you ever wonder why there is a housing shortage, look no further than this. The rate of AFFORDABLE HOUSE building is pathetic, but deliberately done so as to keep house prices in general artificially high. Pensions and other investments are tied up in the housing market, so to flood the market would cause major financial problems, as if there aren;'t enough as it is.

What strikes me if how much housing has disappeared, only to be replaced my waste land. Why can't the council build homes there instead of taking up greenfield land?

  • @timeyre-swain9484

At 0:15 I thought that was a car on fire for a second lol. Thanks for this, great to see a bit of past Sheffield. I feel its losing its character as they are re-gening the place into glassy neo cheap quality buildings, dont know, I love the heavy brick architecture. I loved the dodgy box housing like Norfolk park flats, I dont know why they didnt just clean them up, were they that bad? As for what they are 'doing' to park hill estate, Im lost for words.

The city where I was born. Buildings torn down to permit feral trees to cover lack of foresight. 1960s & 1970s thinking of stupid left wing municipal politicians. Proof that city planners don’t know how to ... demolishing local architectural gems. Good series!

It"s about the people what live or lived there ? Being a ex sailor I can warrant there isn"t many places with a "feel" and togetherness than South Yorkshire . My family originated in Ireland a couple of hundred years ago so most were splattered over northern Britain and some Emigrated but all speak well of the Sheffield connection as my Dad"s Ma lived there all her long life ,a stones throw from Sheffield Wednesday"s ground . The small house is still there a few 100 yards from my present address and it"s hard to believe she brought - up six kids in that terraced house .As for @bruceburns from Aus. educate yourself Brucie Boy - All of my family had their own home by 21 years of age and most had their own businesses . Sheffield was a old city and some parts needed demolishing ,but you know what us Yorkie"s say " Where"s there"s muck ,there"s Brass " ?. The family that stayed put in Britain are seriously better - off than the one"s that went to Aus . 🧐.
