UPDATE: About a month after she fell into a coma, Zhu Ling passed away on December 22nd, 2023 at the age of 50 years old. Various Chinese media report that she experienced a rapidly increasing intracranial pressure and fatally high fever, a complication from a suspected brain tumor as well as the coma. Her parents, retired and in their 80s, were her caretakers for close to 30 years. The team sends their deepest condolences to the Zhu family and Ling’s loved ones.

Keep in mind, this is her roommate, sunny watched as Ling lost clumps and clumps of hair, lost her vision, was in such severe abdominal pain and probably took sadistic joy out of that. Like stephanie said, this isn't a fast-acting poison of anything like that.

Just wanted to let everyone know that she passed away on December 22nd 2023. My she rest in peace .Zhu's parents revealed that she had to be hospitalized at least once a year following the poisoning. Following a flu in 2011, Zhu was hospitalized for ten months. The flu resulted in a lung infection, resulting in her only being able to eat liquid food from then on. On 18 November 2023, Zhu suffered a brain tumor attack, with a fever of 39 °C (102 °F) and fell into a severe coma. She died on 22 December 2023, at the age of 50

The minute you said her hair was falling out in huge clumps made my mind go directly to thallium poisoning. I am retired ER nurse and if you see one case of thallium poisoning you NEVER forget it. It is very difficult to diagnose unless you know specifically what to test for.

i actually attend tsinghua univeristy. I was discussing this case with some of my chinese friends. After this incident chinese students who get accepted into tsinghua are actually told by their teachers to always keep their head down, be humble and to 'hide your intelligence'. Changing your name and going into obscurity are pretty big moves for someone who claims to be innocent. Also the fact that the police just closed the case, like Sunny’s innocent case closed. That is such a strange way to find Justice. Since Sunny didn’t stand up for her innocence, the public will render their own verdict, not that she has to suffer any consequences.

For them not to test for heavy metal poisoning is absolutely insane. I'm no medical professional but anyone who has watched any crime or medical procedural show can tell you those are symptoms of heavy metal poisoning. Within the listing of the first two symptoms I had already guessed where this was going. I rarely have time to watch true crime but even I've heard of several cases of this poison being used.

one correction here: Sun Wei (Sunny) did not marry an American and moved to the U.S. Her real identity has been carefully covered with her family's help. No one can say for sure where she is today but the most recent online investigation shows evidence of her living in Australia, where she has an interior design firm. Rumor said that she was never able to get a U.S visa because the U.S embassy in China is aware of this case. Back then, a U.S embassy staff helped with the email translations and they make sure all consulates in China reject her application. This is likely to be true. In 2015, Sun Wei got so angry and frustrated that she went online to argue with netizens. She mentioned that she did not marry an American, she cannot travel internationally, and her life plan failed because of this case. New evidence show that she might be married to an Australian citizen in exchange of Australian PR, but I am not sure how true that is.

This story is literally scaring me to death right now. I am a foreign student studying in Chinese university. my classmates are also foreigners but there's this one girl in our class that has issues with me and even tried to bully me quite a few times, because teachers likes me and also, because I had to inform teachers about her bullying. The scary thing, she was also my roommate for sometime and I had to change my room due to her constant monstrous behavior towards me for no reason. I have complaint to my teachers and management in our school they warned her but the worse thing, the more teachers scold her and advise her to behave, the more angrier she gets, the more violent. I have been having nightmares and suffered from panic attacks due to her, even imagining things because she is heavier and larger than me in size and has men around her most of the time. Even me being a 30 yo female, a masters student, I still have to go through all this at this age. My mother tells me to always make sure to keep your room locked and never go out alone or pass by her. Thankfully this semester is over so I don't have to see her for a month but, God forbid, if she does something to me, I am going directly to the police and take action. I am praying and I ask you all to pray for me too..

You are and will be protected and covered in God's name, amen. I can't exactly say don't worry, but be cautious and vigilant. Always move with friends or crowds, and if you ever have an unfortunate encounter with her alone then make sure to record any and everything on your phone or a recorder. It's always your words against theirs or theirs against yours when there's no physical evidence. Please take care of yourself, and if you truly feel unsafe try to consider transferring to a different school if it's possible for you to do so. Don't stay where you feel unsafe.

Sun Wei 孙维 or Jasmine Sun has another 2 accomplices who helped her orchestrated the whole incident. Jasmine's grandfather was an influential local government official who helped her escape from facing legal prosecution. 3 girls staying in the same dorm with Zhu Ling poisoned her twice. The first incident led Zhu to suffer from temporary coma in which she was admitted to the hospital and stayed in for a week or so. But it was the second poison attempt that destroyed Zhu for the rest of her life. Believe it or not, these 3 spider girls still kept in touch with one another years after the incident.

Just to show how talented Zhu Ling was in Guqin/music, from what I read, she only picked up Guqin at 12 but within a few years she started to study after a renowned musician (孙贵生）at 15, and she was so talented that he taught her for free. She also played the piano from an early age and learnt many different traditional Chinese instruments later on.

Nothing is missed by God, at the same time we can repent to him, he is all forgiving.

As someone who can speak Chinese, that letter was just written with so much more NON-remorse and entitlement and evilness than the translations seem to portray. I think sunny is definitely the one, even if she’s not the only one, she could be the main mastermind. The entitlement in the letter just matches the high profile snobbishness (putting it lightly) that Sunny’s family have... and also someone who is abnormal in terms of their jealousy threshold compared to most others

Wasn't it postmarked from CA where she now lives?!? 😮 In a way, it felt like Ling and her accomplishments and talent is still living in her mind rent free. I hope it's still eating away into her dead soul. If she had been living a happy life in a foreign land, she would never have given a thought to Ling.

This story is like the Count of Monte Cristo there is a part in that story where the evil "friend" tells the count he did all those evil things against him because how can a poor nobody could be so happy or happier than him when he was the rich kid that had it all. It seems that even after all the harm sunny did to Ling and her family, she's still jealous....how sad! And she will always be sickeningly jealous, that is her punishment, because she knows she will never be as good as Ling was....never!

Sunny didn't just rob Ling of her life. She robbed her and her parents of their future. The hopes and dreams of seeing her graduate, get married or having kids and grand kids. She ended their family line by taking their only child they had left. And then to send that letter. What a despicable excuse for a "human being". May Ling and Jing rest in peace.

Thanks for sharing this...I'm crying again. After 29 years of struggling, Ling left at December 23. It must be a cruel mischelf for her parents. All these year, Ling's parents are used to take care of her. Ling's mother got her profile picture as a mother bird feeding her baby. It just so heartbreaking looking her last daughter dying in such a long span. Life is so cruel that we all know who is the KILLER, but still fail to reach justice for Ling😭 Now the KILLER Jasmine Sun (aka Sunny/ Shiyan Sun) moved to Australia, having the nice life that she took from Ling. Honestly, I wonder how Sun's kids are. If they are living a good life the way things are. As much as I despise Sun's murder of Ling, I feel torn between wishing for Karma to catch up to her, but also not wanting her kids to get involved with her bullshit. I don't want for children to be branded as a Killer's offspring by others, there are always assholes out there to bully them for that.

i feel like the doctors were probably bought off by Sunny's family too. corruption was/is rampant in China. it wasn't even an open secret during this period, it was just open. I'm of Chinese descent and I remember seeing sooo many minor acts of bribery when I visited as a kid. Somewhat hilariously it was always with cigarettes. Want to get in the bank five minutes before closing? Pass the guard a cigarette. Want to avoid a ticket for jaywalking? Give the cop a cig. Want to go in the back of the zoo and pet a baby panda? Hand the zookeeper a pack of smokes. Of course "favors" of this magnitude probably required cold hard cash, but when you're a government official you've no shortage of that because people wanting favors of you are just opening gifting you priceless shit.

@@Uvlugiak I got my diagnosis from one of the top doctors in my country at age 26 after a lifetime of struggle. It can happen, hope isn't completely lost. Just keep on going and trying out new doctors as long as possible. One of them will listen to you, you just have to find that one.

​@@pixitjeI think that doctors should think of both because I had a doctor who wanted to diagnose me at 20 years old (and vaccinated against chocked pox so never had them) with shingles. I had a staff infection. I think horses should be thought of first and when all the horses have been accounted for, start looking at the zebras. Because there are only so many horses.

Sunny definitely poisoned Ling, she had all those connections but still couldn't be compare to Ling. The saddest thing for me is that: How did this really benefit Sunny? What does it all mean in the grand scheme of things? It was only university. Sunny could have still built a life of her own. Kind of like she has now, she is out there living, with a career and presumably, family. Ling could have had her own separate life away from Sunny, had Sunny not been so shortsighted. All this for what Sunny? Its crazy.

the injustice of this makes me so angry. this case is like the worst possible corruption and negligence of the medical industry, police system, and arguably even academic system (I mean how did NO PROFESSORS think to check up on ling or notify her parents? how did no one notice that LITERAL POISON was being taken from the chem department???) all wrapped up in one. not to mention the privilege afforded to people with wealth and power. what a cruel case.

I think the fact that police didn't look for another suspect after interviewing Sunny says it all. They knew she did it but, because of her family, they couldn't charge her, so they left the case "unsolved". It's better than framing an innocent person, ig And I believe that that letter was from Sunny, but I think she probably just used language to make it sound like she wasn't working alone. The letter arrived 10 years ago, so Ling would have been about 40. I can't imagine anyone but the person who hurt her wanting to write a letter like that, rubbing it in her family's faces so long after the attack

One police officer told on the internet that it did not take long for Sunny herself to confess during the questioning, but after her families came they overturned the whole confession and she was never questioned again. The university made an announcement not to grant Sunny her degree, the university did it to calm the anger of the public but imagine Sun's family said nothing to this if she was innocent.

Feelings of guilt can also transform into hatred against the innocent victim, so lashing out against Ling was a way of letting out the unbearable, confusing mix of emotions seething inside of her and eating away at her. Corruption is more proof that humanity will never be capable of bringing forth real justice. From history and modern views, corruption is inevitable, it seems. Bit by bit the rules to keep it at bay become eroded and we ALL suffer for it.

During the Chinese Civil War, Sunny’s grandad, Sun Yueqi (孙越崎）was initially a high member of the Chinese National party but turned to the Chinese Communist party when the National Party fled to Taiwan and he gave the Communist party resources that belonged to the National party. As you can imagine, he was a big deal politically. He was also very close to the Chinese President at the time of the crime, Jiang Zemin (江泽民）. Rumour is that Sunny’s grandad asked Jiang Zemin to save Sunny. Also Sunny moved to Australia since the White House petition. There are KZread videos of Ling’s lawyer.

The hospital not even wanting to testing for thallium had me mad but the letter the family got made me furious. To say that anyone deserved that horrendous decline of health be cause she “might’ve been a bit mean to other people” is WILD. I also think it’s false. But also to upset the family that like years later and for why?? Who needs enemies when you got friends like this.

I had a friend who I spent a lot of time with. We were both freelance designers and we were doing ok. Then I got a job with the biggest agency in town and he changed. He would make snide remarks about me copying designs from other designers, and then say he was just joking. He just felt "how can you be so good." One day another friend of ours told me how he was always asking questions about me and my projects, and about how much I was being paid. This other friend advised me to be careful around this guy. That was when I cut off ties with him. These kinds of people have a philosophy, "We can be friends, as long as I am better than you." They are potentially dangerous.

EVERY time I hear about thallium poisonings it makes me think about this mysterious illness I had while living in a cabin with this roommate but I steadily got better after moving out from that situation. I don't think this was a case of jealousy so much as malign envy. She didn't want what Ling had, she specifically didn't want Ling to have what she had. To a truly cruel and destructive level. I truly fear for what kind of person can feel so entitled to inflict something like this on not only Ling, her supposed best friend, but her whole family. "Friends" enacting such violence on someone is it's own particular kind of scary and stomach turning. Especially for girls. We deeply trust our girl friends. it's so surprising that Ling didn't have her personality altered by her sister's death. she wasn't like traumatized and started doing bad at school. these two girls were trully perfect. trully perfect and someone destroyed both.

Although the cult case and the junko case from Japan feel much more gruesome, in a different way, this case feels so bad because it shows how someone close to you who you trust a lot and have no suspicions toward you could literally cause you so much trauma and pain…and you don’t see it coming. It’s like, there is no way to save yourself from that kind of crime or avoid it from happening to you if you have friends of any kind vs many others where it’s like “oh just don’t walk alone at night” or “oh just don’t join any organization or suspicious cult sounding groups” like no, ur roommate or best friend could do this and you wouldn’t suspect them at all

So SAD THAT POOR Ling passed away. May she rest in peace and may Sunny recieve the judgement and punishment that she deserves.

The suspect Shiyan Sun has fled to Australia and even got a whole new identity - new name, new birthday and all. Heard she might've even had some plastic surgery done. Their old classmates don't seem to care much though. One of them, who's now working at Johnson Johnson in the US, said the whole Zhu Ling poisoning mess really messed up their class's chances of being recognized as a "top group" by the university, and that is what they cared about most.

I'm bawling my eyes out... she'll be 50 in 4 days. Happy birthday Ling ❤ you're a true gem. You didn't deserve anything that happened to you. I hope the woman who did this to you faces her karma.

You got all parts of the Chinese culture and the crime right. Seems you and your researchers have done your homework. Thanks so much for spreading of this information. The world needs to beware of Sun’s atrocity and justice itself needs people like you.

You did the victim's family a great service by sharing this story with a wider audience. I heard about this incident and tragedy years ago when I was a kid. It was beyond a child's imagination how such cruelty would be inflicted on anyone. Unfortunately, I went on to learn that narcassistic psychopats do exist and they are great danger to all innocent lives that cross paths with them. I don't think the perpetrator will ever be held accountable. How could the case end so quietly in China back then? The perp's family must be well-connected. Now they live in paradise on earth overseas and are probably laughing about how they got away from justice. I do hope karma exists and can send the perp and her family to justice in any possible form though.

I have a hardcore special interest in toxicology and poisons and I knew it was thallium within the first 10 minutes of this episode... it's so terrible she went through this. Thallium poisoning cannot be understated as one of the worst forms of poisonings you can go through. I wish the doctors had spotted it sooner considering it was one of the most prolific forms of murder-poisons of the 1920s.

The doctors probably spotted it a lot sooner, records show doctors suggesting it is heavy metal poisoning at the early stage, Sun's family had ties with the hospital so people suspect they were misdiagnosing on purpose, to render her disabled or dead, so it's easier to cover up. Zhu Ling's classmates even had her symptoms translated and wrote a letter pleading help and doctors around the world diagnosed it as thallium poisoning but the hospital dismissed them. The video didn't go into details on how much the hospital pushed back on ling's family in this case.

Medical incompetence is so painful They act like they're the smartest people on the planet and the only thing they have greater than the average person is arrogance.

A bunch of doctors chose their job, because they feel superior to nature. Most doctors tho, the system just doesn't allow thorough checks. You really need someone who's willing to go out of their way. Then again, you're only one if their patients. They aren't as emotionally attached as you are

I honestly think it's not only jealousy, everyone gets jealous at one point in their life but this level of pure evil, wanting someone to die a slow and painful death is not even possible to explain with such a common term. I think the pressure and anxiety of someone being better in life and the whole atmosphere of that school is a huge factor into making someone even commit such an atrocious act. There is no excuse for doing this but I feel like jealousy is such an understatement for this evil. It makes me so sad to hear such a talented woman getting robbed of her bright future....

Jealousy/envy is one of the 7 deadly sins, trust me this was jealousy and jealousy alone. Just like how people have higher murder intent, higher anger issues, some people's jealousy are much 'eviler'

Since Ling was better than her or so Sunny thought in her head, she should have just used that as motivation to improve and become a better person! Or just I don't known distance herself from Ling and focus on her own self, since she clearly had self esteem issues.

Sunny is guilty. If not why would she changed her name and date of birth unless she want to hide something. Sunny even moved to America. Last of all, the letter that came from the state about the victim's character. Who else lives in the state? Jealous has killed so many people around the world and this wouldn't surprised me at all if Sunny is the killer.

I want to know how the hell Sunny was able to procure such a toxic element out of the laboratory. What were the Professors and Postgrads doing? The department is to be blamed as well. They would be required to dispose off the protective gear that they used before going back to there dorms considering thallium can harm on contact and inhalation. HOW THE HELL WAS SUNNY ABLE TO CARRY THALLIUM ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE DORM WITHOUT HARMING HERSELF? The college authorities should have been investigated too.

It's not that hard to gain access to things from a department or workplace you have access to. No one is sitting in the Chemistry lab all day watching the elements. Why would you think it would be hard? Even if someone saw her go into the lab outside of class hours no one would bat an eye because she is a chemist student added to the fact her family is prominent and powerful. The true lesson here is not how to secure thallium but how dangerous jealousy can be.

Or maybe she didn’t carry thallium to the dorm, but instead carried ling’s belongings to the laboratory.

Hearing thallium is mistaken for potassium gave me full body shivers, every muscle contraction and relaxation requires potassium, thats probably why the entire body is in so much pain. Terrifying to think about, that poor girl.

Yeah, once I scalded my hands badly and the pain made me want to die. Just blowing on my skin was agonising so I can’t even begin to imagine what it felt like if I had that pain all over my body.

I saw a video of Zhu Lin's father being interviewed. In the video, Zhu Lin's father suppressed his sadness and comforted the people who cared about his daughter. The next second, his father's face showed sadness. I feel really heartbroken when I see this. The murderer and her family have enjoyed a better life, and the murderer even fled to Canada.But zhulin lost her life several days ago….

it’s cases like these that help me understand why my Asian American parents strictly tell me to not eat or drink anything at anyone’s house or whenever offered.

I am shivering. Like literally trembling. That photo of Ling in the hospital bed with open wide eyes, mouth, no hair and just paralyzed...God, my heart dropped when i saw it. I got really scared, but i don't mean to be offensive, just like her friend who also didn't mean it. She did so much, but in the end, it got all taken away from her. So this case took place 1994, when Ling was 21 years old and when the whole thallium posioning started. Have any of you ever thought WHY the KINDEST people suffer the most?? I don't want to compare any/anyone as a target, but if i say "concrete-encased high school girl murder case", do you get it? That girl did nothing, yet she suffered 44 days of hell. May God Bless those who got killed and couldn't finish their future. This is just so unsettling.

It teaches me never to tell your friends your plans or even your results . To humble yourself because also jealousy is the most dangerous emotion . I don't like jealous people or friends . Jealousy is very much real. I just don't know why people can not just be supportive and happy for their peers.But I think in some way it teaches the importance of good parenting . It is psychopathy not jealousy😅. No amout of jealousy pushed people to kill!! Sunny wished for a better status, Ling was in the way. Sunny compiled the most brutal and untraceable tactic to kill her. Had no regard for right or wrong to achieve her goals. And she did it. Graduated top of class from the most prestigious school in China and moved to America; success guaranteed. Bruh this already sounds so vile is like a movie

And Ling eventually passed away on this December 22th, after 29 years of suffering. Will there be justice for her and her family?

I heard there's another case of Thalium poisoning for post-grad student in China around 2013 and thankfully, the preperator is jailed. It's really shame that Ling didn't get her justice. I wish all the best for her and her parents.

Someone else commented that Ling’s doctor may have refused because he already suspected or knew it was thallium poisoning and wanted to study the effects on Ling. He went on to write papers on it so it seems he did receive some acclaim.

Changing her name and moving to the US is an admission of guilt. Dong dong is a pseudonym. It was Sunny, exclusively. Nobody would confide in someone else with such a secret and get away with it.

Word of mouth is that Sun is living her best life in Aussie married with kids. While Ling suffered a brain tumor and passed away on Dec 12 2023.

It's so scary and repulsive to think that this letter might have come (and probably did) from one of the perpetrators, which means they not only have no regrets, but also think they did right by punishing poor girl like this.... Imagine, these people walk amongst us. They are our colleagues, neighbors. And they probably sleep just fine at night...

God is real not karma

The way you described her condition in the hospital is my final image of my mom as she took her final breaths. It was the most traumatic, soul wrenching moment of my life. No one should have to see their loved one in that state. It's something that destroys any innocence you have left in your being and changes you permanently.

This is the scariest thing I have ever heard. The fact that the killer got let go makes it 100x worse
