She was terrified of being buried alive! | Mount Jerome Cemetery | Part 2
Фильм және анимация
Mount Jerome Cemetery & Crematorium (Irish: Reilig Chnocán Iaróm) is situated in Harold's Cross on the south side of Dublin, Ireland. Since its foundation in 1836, it has witnessed over 300,000 burials. Originally an exclusively Protestant cemetery, Roman Catholics have also been buried there since the 1920s.
The name of the cemetery comes from an estate established there by the Reverend Stephen Jerome, who in 1639 was vicar of St. Kevin's Parish. At that time, Harold's Cross was part of St. Kevin's Parish. In the latter half of the 17th century, the land passed into the ownership of the Earl of Meath, who in turn leased plots to prominent Dublin families. A house, Mount Jerome House, was constructed in one of these plots, and leased to John Keogh. In 1834, after an aborted attempt to set up a cemetery in the Phoenix Park, the General Cemetery Company of Dublin bought the Mount Jerome property, "for establishing a general cemetery in the neighbourhood of the city of Dublin".
The first official burial happened on the 19th of September 1836. The buried deceased were the infant twins of Matthew Pollock.
The cemetery initially started with a landmass of 26 acres and grew to a size of 48 acres in 1874.
In 1984, burial numbers were falling, thus the Cemetery was losing revenue and began to deteriorate. A crematorium was needed to regain revenue and deal with plant overgrowth on the estate.
The Funerary Chapel in the cemetery was the first Puginian Gothic church in Dublin. It was designed by William Atkins.
In 2000, Mount Jerome Cemetery established its own crematorium on the site.

Think the grave Martha Magee maybe said by her executors. She left a fortune that was looked after by two ministers. Part of it was used to build a college here in Northern Ireland which was named after her. Great video

24:14 You're correct of course, it says "Executors" not "Executioners". What a severe, austere necropolis. I wonder if there were height restrictions on the monuments in that region, or maybe it was just local taste. The few obelisks I saw weren't that tall. What the tombs lack in height, they make up for in their mammoth size. It's almost like looking at Ancient Egyptian sarcophagi, or some of the blocks used to make the Great Pyramid.
My partner and I love watching your video. I even send them to him to watch at work. Thank you. From Australia

LOVE cemeteries and LOVE your videos! I've been watching them for days now. Your voice is calm and comforting and you show so much respect to everyone, dead and living, with a kind sense of humor - "there ya go, Jesus" (17:57) is just adorable. Thank you for these videos. Superb. 💚🙏🏻
Remember me as you pass by, As you are now so once was I, As I am now soon you will be, Prepare thyself to follow me. If you ever see this on a stone do give it a shout out. Another interesting instalment. I wonder what they would make of the world as it is today.

Okay, then I want to leave a comment here as well. Your walk was very interesting, many beautiful tombs and tombstones, but what intrigued me, was, that a person, who committed a crime and was executed, got such a big memorial to be remembered of. Well, times are changing, and about hundred years before this execution took place, people who broke the law were buried in non-sacred ground. I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and hope to see you here again soon. It was great fun to meet other fans of Dead Good Walks. 🎄

If your talking about the Martha Magee one it say Executors not executioners! Martha Magee (c. 1755-1846) was a philanthropist and a co-founder and the namesake of Magee College in Northern Ireland
@sleepynightowl1550

Martha Maria Magee wasn't executed. He actually read the description on the memorial wrong, sadly. It says executor not executioner. An executor is a person named in a will to oversee the process of wrapping up the decedent’s estate and distributing the remaining assets according to the will of the deceased person. Martha was a well respected woman, widow of Rev. William Magee. Her husband died in 1800, leaving her to raise her two boys by herself while depending on the widow fund only. Both boys entered into the military and died as young men. Martha inherited a fortune from both her brothers, who were in the military overseas in India. She made a lot of charitable donations after she inherited the money. A year before her death, Martha bequeathed £20,000 in her will to the Presbyterian Church of Ireland to found a college for theology and the arts. Magee College opened in 1865 primarily as a theological college, but accepted students from all denominations to study a variety of subjects.

I don't suspect she did a crime. Executor is someone who takes care of all your affairs after your passing, in the case, burying her.

Well it took 3 and a half days but I'm now finished watching all of your videos.. I'm going to hazard a guess and say that the half door mosuleums used to have stairs going down to the doors which were maybe filled in to allow for level roads (no clue why though)... also I reckon you should try and invest in one of those snake cameras to put through the holes and cracks and see what's inside :). Amazing videos hope to see alot more of them :). Merry Christmas to you and your family. Have a great one :).
Maria Magee was a widow of a prominent minister, and took her inheritance from her deceased brothers and started a college. The executors are the people incharge of the school. Hence the children around her. (at 24:11)

First time commenting on your videos. I would like to say I really enjoy your videos a lot. We live in San Francisco here in California and just south of SF we have Colma, California which is called the city of cemeteries, no sooner do you leave one cemetery you run into another..Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma is a very beautiful cemetery with beautiful monuments as well, maybe someday you will get a chance to visit here in northern California and explore the cemeteries in Colma. One more thing..section 24:12 Mrs Martha Maria Magee's monument doesnt say executioner..says her executors..I giggled when you said, executioner 😁 All in all love your videos..Wishing you a safe and Happy New Year! 😊

Hello there, I find your videos so zen and interesting. Some of my husband's relatives are buried there. I did wonder whether it was a more prominently Protestant cemetery in the past. FYI the surname Meagher is pronounced 'Marr' and Findlater as 'Finn-d-later 😊 Thank you for all your really fascinating content.

The grave with the anchor and chain the round thing is a capstan which was used to wind up the anchor men would turn the capstan to raise the anchor
I remember going to that cemetery with my friend as a kid. There was and I presume still are round stones sticking out of the ground as you head towards the Church. They gave me the creeps as they looked like the skulls😉PS Enjoying your videos.
I believe a lot of Victorian graves had bells in them it’s where the term “dead ringer” comes from.
Back then medical science did not have a sure way of knowing if someone was really dead and no doubt a lot of people were likely buried alive. One of the most horrific ways to end up while conscious.
You should go to the pharmacist and get her something to stop that coffin!!
i can only think a bell and chane is there incase some wallop was buried alive and it was to signal they were alive still
That was a great walk! Interesting at the end to see the monument for the executed. Some of that stone is very odd almost a brain like texture.

the monument at the end, are you sure that read executioners? i'm thinking it may have said executors, lawyers, family, whoever had control of her estate 🤔.. awesome cemetery! interesting stonework..wonder if it was carved or a type of stone that weathers that way, in any case, very cool! lovely day too.. thanks Dan! Interesting. The big tall posh grave with columns with the 2 statues at about 24 mins in that bears the name Martha Maria Magee.I found her name quite easily by googling it. Same death date and year and it does not mention her being executed. She had a hard sad life with lots of deaths around her, including sons and brothers but left alot of money to be used for charitable causes etc the name Rev Richard Dill is mentioned in her life story and is also on your gravestone. Has to be her but no mention of execution.
@Sandra-dm8rd

She wasn’t executed. She was an executor. There’s a college named after her
In the case of Martha Maria Magee the word is Executors, they are the people she employed to take care of her estate after her death.
The one with the chain and bell is quite a story! I’m new, so I’m trying to catch up. I’m enjoying all your walks. It’s strangely calming and very interesting. It’s fascinating to hear the historical aspects of those places. I love the sound of the snow and frost crunching as you walk. Someone has been executed, I wonder what for. Great walk though.
You really need a flash light
🎉🎉🎉🎉
How did they build the tower with the chain in time for the funeral,surely it would have taken weeks/ months,by then folks would know for sure the person was dead🤷must be another explanation.
Would be slightly amusing if Findlater was a clerical error and was somehow finalised. Like they couldn't find his family name and wrote 'find later' on the papers.

@@deadgoodwalks Yeah, I figured that was likely the case after commenting. Probably something that person was never without in life. My mind just doesn't think in that sort of way when it comes to remembering dead loved ones, so it took me a while to work out why, lol.
That's where the saying ''Saved by the bell comes from'' They use to have ropes or chains with bells mounted on top above the graves, the rope or chain was fed inside the coffin so if someone was buried alive they could ring the bell to alert those above ground. There is no recorded case of anyone ever ringing the bell from the coffin. The TV show Mythbusters did a section on this. They proved that there is no chance that anyone could live long enough inside a sealed coffin to be buried alive and survive. They proved that you wouldn't last more than a few short minutes from lack of oxygen and carbon dioxide build up. So you wouldn't even make it on the journey to the cemetery, never mind being buried alive. They used all sorts of equipment to test this myth. So all the stories you hear of bodies being exhumed and scratch marks found on the interior of the coffin where someone was buried alive and were attempting to scratch their way out is nothing but fable.
@turbo.panther
8 ай бұрын
So then nobody was actually saved by the bell
When I was a child we went to take care of the family I was admonished for stepping on someone’s resting place. Lol
*Executors* are persons appointed to handle an estate.
Damn, undoubtedly ends up, in the coffin easy then and now to end up interred alive
@25:00 the hole end to end could be a pole to carry it?
Kurzer iis German I would think. Means shorter.
Irish stonemasonary at its finest.
Its a capston not a bollard.
