Hold strong. Wait it out until he talks to you about it. Chances are he's sad, because he may have realized what he's done/not done throughout the years. There may be some embarrassment. Father's & Mother's Day is honoring all Parents especially if they are still living just because the person isn't your Mother/ Father doesn't mean you can't give them a gift especially if it is your wife/husband.

He’s not your father. If you have kids help them do something for their father. If they are of age then they are on their own. I take my mother out for Mother’s Day. Not my wife. My wife gets 364 days of attention.
