I was partly responsible for saving this combine. I just missed it at Garden City, in July, 1985, as it had been sent to the M-F company store in Hutchinson. By the time I got home, a month later, I called the Hutch store and to my horror, had found out this and about 19 more old M-F combines, had been bought by a salvage. Sadly, most salvages refuse to sell or let go of any intact combine or any other machine or vehicle. I called Mike Prieb of Mike's Equipment in Buhler, KS. Mike was going to part out the old Number One, but I begged him to spare it. He did mention how it sure seemed reasonably sound, when he drove it about the lot, but with so many others, he just could not get overly excited about "just another M-F 760," until he heard the story behind the combine. He agreed to not destroy it, but would offer it for sale, as was, and without any repairs or improvements. I sincerely thanked him, too. About 2 months later, I was in Kansas, on another business trip. I actually went to Mike's Equipment, to meet Mike, but the famed 760 was gone. Sold to what had been promised to be a good home. I finally got to go out to Smith Center and meet Melvin Lyon and his son. I was again, very disappointed and disturbed to see the combine just out in the open, not far from a ramshackle, dilapidated house, which was not even livable, by most standards. I took many pictures of it. Apparently, it got moved from that spot, and the house eventually razed after the son died, but after 20 more years, NOTHING had been done toward restoring, repairing or even sheltering this poor 760! I had kept in touch with Marvin Helland over the years, after meeting him, nearly 40 years ago. Knowing his enduring love for Massey-Harris and especially Massey-Ferguson combines, I wanted him to buy the machine from Mr. Lyons, way back in 1988, when it had become obvious, after 3 years, the Lyons' really cared nothing about this icon of history. Apparently, Marvin did make eventual connection with him, because when I finally got to see him again, in late May of 1999, in Hugoton, KS, he had the job of cutting wheat for Melvin Lyons. I always knew if anyone could further help save this last surviving of the first 1971 pilots, it would be my good friend, Marvin Helland Sr.!

nice to see it got restored. I have 2 older ones for parts and 2 newer ones that I used until last year. I really liked the v8 perkins with hydro. Got stuck several times trying to straight cut flax last year. I finally swathed and pulled out the parked 851 pulltype with the 1370 case pulling it with duals on. only got stuck one more time.. one neighbor with 3 large JD combines and got stuck 13 times in 25 acres. Bigger not always better.

Actually, there were a small number of "TX Series" prototype Model 760's, which precluded the first 10 pilots, which were also hand-built. This was the first of those, just after the TX Series.

For those wanting to get rid of mouse smell in a machine cab for a seaso, after cleaning and you still have that smell that's really hard to get rid of, try sprinkling a little coffee around in the cab.... Just the cheapest regular grind coffee you can find.... Works well, makes the cab smell like coffee instead of mouse....
