@@stevemortillaro7201 The language in this movie is Mayathan, not Aztec Nahuatl. The Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortez (is that really him at the end of the movie?) disembarked in Yucatan, and this was once the site of the Mayan Empire. However, the collapse of the Mayan Empire occurred in the 9th century and Cortez came in 1519. However, the Aztec Empire did not extend to Yucatan. But despite the inaccuracies - a really good movie.

I agree- great movie. I am not an expert on ancient meso-American languages, so thanks for the enlightenment. I do know that it was the Aztecs who greeted Cortez- the day after an eclipse- so I guess that makes the king there on the top of the temple Montezuma himself. He had his revenge on me when I visited Mexico many years ago when I was a kid- couldn’t hardly leave the bathroom. 😂

"I am Jaguar Paw, son of Flint Sky. My Father hunted this forest before me. My name is Jaguar Paw. I am a hunter. This is my forest. And my sons will hunt it with their sons after I am gone." Fun Fact: Many substantial speaking roles were filled by Mayan people who had never acted before. The sick girl, who curses the hunting party as they and the captives pass right before entering the city, was played by a seven-year-old who lived in a dirt-floored hut in a village similar to Jaguar Paw's (Rudy Youngblood). High Stunt Fact: For the waterfall jump scene, Rudy Youngblood jumped in a harness from a 15-story building in Veracruz over about 10 takes. The shot was digitally superimposed over the real waterfall later. After director Mel Gibson harassed Youngblood about his initial fear of jumping, Youngblood got together with the stunt crew and goaded Gibson into taking a jump himself. Historical Fact: Apocalypto (2006) is the answer to the extremely racist and historically inaccurate "Noble Savage" myth. The film is allegedly inspired by the text of the Popol Vuh (sometimes called the Mayan Bible) and Spanish missionary descriptions of the Maya. According to director Mel Gibson and co-writer Farhad Safinia's DVD commentary, the halting of the sacrifices at the onset of a solar eclipse is a carefully-timed ruse by the Mayan ruling class. As precocious astrologers, the Mayans used their knowledge of celestial phenomena to control the underclass.

I can’t help getting the feeling though that as a devout Catholic, Mel Gibson framed the depiction of the Mayans as so barbaric and savage that the audience would feel that the conquistadors arriving and the genocide to follow is justified, and the Mayans getting their just desserts, that they have it coming, despite the fact that no tribe or people, Mayan or otherwise is safe from being literally or culturally purged or plundered by the Spanish and their overzealous missionaries. No one expects the Spanish Inquisition! But still, approximately 80 million people in South and Central America and the Caribbean would be killed by the time the dust settles. Some tribes like the Taino, supposedly the kindest and most innocent people, would be made extinct.

Herán Cortez arrived in what is today Mexico territory after leaving Cuba, where he had been living for 10 years. Before arriving on Continental America (Mexico) he had founded a successful business and a family in Cuba with a native American woman and had produced the first mestizo child in the Americas. After that he secretly and privately organized an expedition with his own money from Cuba to Continental America (Mexico) with 400 men he hired. This was done without the King of Spain even knowing. Conclusion: Cortez did not go to Mexico in the name of the Spanish King, rather as a privately founded expedition. He later claimed to the Mexicas (Natives of Mexico) that he arrived in the name of the Spanish King, but it was a lie.

If you notice, when the head priest is performing the sacrifices and the eclipse comes, you can see the priest who came to him in a trance briefly break the trance to point up at the eclipse. Then the head priest exchanges looks with the royal couple and announces that the sacrifice is over. Most people miss that the Maya were excellent astronomers and it’s highly likely in this scene that the priests, royalty, and nobility had access to the astronomical and mathematical information to know that that eclipse was going to happen that day of the sacrifice and they put on a big show for a disease and drought stricken population to control them and stay in power. Throughout Maya history many city states succumbed and were destroyed by uprisings during times of drought and hardship.

Thank you for wording this since it often flies above many people who watch this film. There are a lot of modern Native Americans left descended from the Mayans and Aztecs. Many mixed with the British whites and then the modern American whites and others, became Mexicans which are the descendants of the Spaniards mating with the Mayans and Aztecs. But a lot are mostly pure-blood descendants from Mayans/Aztecs and some tribes still exist and retain land rights now, some of which were given back and have their own sovereignty separate from the United States, albeit to a limited capacity but there are more "than a few" left.

Also, the Aztecs/Mayans did really do human ritual sacrifices as they were a very superstitious people and believed that some of their gods, including the god of the rain and the god of the sun, required them to sacrifice people to appease them and maybe grant them benefits such as protection from disease and/or bountiful harvests for their food, etc. Such ritual sacrifices were also seen amongst the ancient Egyptians, as well. Often they used the ritualistic sacrifices as a form of intimidation and control of the native tribes who were enemies of the Aztecs and Mayans. Keep them in line by use of terror rather than from belief systems. Many of these competing clans teamed up with the Conquistadors to take down their empires. Of course, the Spaniards turned around and subjugated them after defeating the Aztecs and Mayan rulers.

Great reaction to a great movie. Careful saying truths like you did about the Europeans rescuing the thousands of victims of these brutal tyrant warlords. People in the western half of the world are afraid of truths. But you're absolutely correct. They were savages. Plain and simple. All were barbaric to one degree or another. This is objective fact. Europeans didn't "not understand them." They understood perfectly. This is nothing unique to the Americas. ALL of the world went through the same stages of development. The only difference is that most of the rest of the world went through it thousand[s] of years earlier and gave up the tribal warlord barbarism and religious performative sacrifices for better modes of government/spirituralism. Objective truth distorted by modern fools trying to re-write history for political gain. Colonists saved and aided more than they harmed, at least to the peaceful ones, which is why from the very beginning many tribes became close allies and assimilated early on. A rare few savages were "noble savages" and actually deserve respect for their high culture and morality and society. That's the exception, not the rule, and it's a shame the rare few who deserve special consideration are obscured by the BS rainbow-washing of history pretending that violent savage tyrants whose primary mode of rule was terrorysm, grrrayp, kidnapping, ambushing soft targets and avoiding warrior targets, and enslavement (the norm for most) were "good guys". They weren't. That's like pretending the Vikings at their worst were just misunderstood victims, too. What a joke. The real amazing/good ones are hiding behind the political smoke screen, sadly. Modern terrorysts are better than the average american tribe back then. This movie excellently showcases the typical violent barbarians using warlord-like power to rule and terrify, and it also shows the "noble savages" who were just primitive humans of great virtue and wisdom. The latter was routinely preyed on by the former. Thankfully, many colonists protected and shielded the former from the latter, too. They mixed cultures rapidly and integrated century[ies] before the others.

Lol What an amount of bullshit!! The "Good colonizers" went there for one thing: richness. They didn't save anyone: they enslaved the natives, and the one who didn't want to submit were publicly tortured. Cristoforo Colombo, for example, was very know for making his soldiers cut off the hands of the savages who refused to work for him as slave; then they lean their hands around their neck "If you don't want to work, then you don't need your hands": Very similar to what King Leopold II of Belgium did, in XIX century, to the africans of the Congo. Now, don't get me wrong; I'm not saying that we (the whites) are the "bad guys", and them (Aztecs and Mayans) are the "good ones". I'm just saying the all humanity is shit. The ones with the superior technology, and who was more numerous in numbers, enslaved/destroyed/killed the other. And that's all. If you're older than six, you should already have gotten sick with this "The Good ones vs the Evil ones" game.

hi The Loud Guys. 2 of the 3 main civilizations of the Americas were the Aztecs and the Mayans, who were in Mexico and part of Central America. The scarificios were to satisfy the current god, in this case, Kukulkan or Quetzalcóat, which is the same god, which was, the god of: creator god, and the god of rain, wind, storms , and life. creator of man, the Lord, of the Dawn, and the Serpent, Rain Cloud. There were other gods, depending on why they requested their presence, as well as the arrival of the Spanish, who brought with them many diseases, and took away the wealth. They believed that the eclipse was a message from their god. when in reality, the shaman or priest, who made the sacrifices, saying that they had to give offerings to the gods, paying with their lives that they were satisfied with what the gods gave them . pre-Spanish beliefs. Mexico is currently North American, which at the same time makes it a Hispanic American and Latin American country, which covers, from Mexico, to Argentina, the language being Spanish, which is used to communicate with all the countries before, mentioned, with the exception of the United States, and Canada Important fact: The United States IS NOT AMERICA, because AMERICA is a continent, and not a single country. This is South America, but similar to Mexico at the time as well with the domination of various tribes, including slavery, sacrificing humans, etc, etc, etc. Mayans, Inca, Aztec (Mexico) were all brutal and sacrificed people. This is well before any European nation stepped foot in the Americas (South/North). Then the Spanish amped it up many levels and slaughtered. Think about that. Also - in North America the Native Americans slaughtered other tribes so let's make sure it's clear there was always blood lust in the Americas.

A total lunar eclipse occurred on March 4th 1504, visible at sunset for the Americas. During his fourth and last voyage, Christopher Columbus induced the inhabitants of Jamaica to continue provisioning him and his hungry men, successfully intimidating them by correctly predicting a total lunar eclipse for 1 March 1504 (visible on the evening of 29 February in the Americas). Some have claimed that Columbus used the Ephemeris of the German astronomer Regiomontanus,[1] but Columbus himself attributed the prediction to the Almanach by Abraham Zacuto.[2]

This movie is historically inaccurate on purpose I think. The types of sacrificial death cults on the scale seen in the movie were practiced more in Central Mexico among the Aztecs and Tarascans than among the Maya. The Maya who are depicted on the screen also did human sacrifice but it was on a much lesser scale. By the time the Spanish arrived the Maya were already a shadow of their former selves. The city state shown is more an example of what they could have been like during the Mayan classical period several centuries before. The Maya also were never a united people nor did they have a single language. They spoke multiple Mayan languages with one being the sacred one used on monuments. They lived in multiple flourishing city states but war, droughts, and over exploitation of their resources caused them mass casualties over the centuries. They are notable for their writing system, mathematical and astronomical knowledge, as well as their engineering feats. When the Spanish arrived they were also already under heavy influence from central Mexico. The tribal Maya from the jungle are a representation of the lacandon Maya who shunned Maya and Spanish civilization and preferred to live in the jungle, but they appeared much later in time.
