    I wish there was more awareness around the unethical breeding of French Bulldogs. They have such terrible breathing issues and so many other health issues. Ethical bulldogs are bred with a longer snouts so they have way less breathing issues. Thank you for rescuing honey bun.

    It can be much the same with pugs, and I also blame the amount of social media pugs etc for them having so many health issues. I have a pug and you can see the relief on a vet she's never seen before's face when they see she's not overweight, doesn't have any breathing, hip, ear issues etc (we've lucked out that our spainel thinks our pug is her 'baby' and pins the pug down for ear cleaning about 50 times a day, so she's never had any ear issues.) I view preventing common co morbid conditions as much as possible and doing as much as possible to avieviate them if they occur as paramount to responsible ownership and that would apply regardless of what breed we own. When we got my pug we immediatly decided to set funds aside for her to have nasal resection done when she was spayed and though we've been fortunate that she's not had any breathing issues we still had it done as a precaution. I'd rather a dog not have an anesthetic when they already have compromised breathing to FIX said compromised breathing; that just seems counterintuative and unnecessarily risky. Our primary vet has said many pug owners don't want to have NR done and was super relieved when they suggested it and we said we'd always planned for her to have it done. Apparently they are often chewed out for suggesting it 'unnecessarily'. I do blame the amount of social media pugs for a lot of the health issues brachy breeds face, and our vet is inclined to agree with us. New vets we see are always suprised to see our pug not overweight and I would be not only mortified if she became overweight, but would fully expect to be chewed out by the vet as I view non medical obesity in dogs as the owner failing in their responsibilities, if its due to medication or thyroid trouble etc then of course not the owner's fault but many people buy pugs not knowing the breed standards and mistake 'cobby' as my country's standards describe the pug build, for overweight, causing multiple hip, breathing and skin issues. And of course many social media pugs are overweight meaning an inexperienced owner may mistake that for the breed standard. Even the stereotype of pugs screaming their heads off at nail clipping can potentially be linked to owners not clipping them enough, and not aclimitising them early enough, causing (according to our vet) the quicks to grow longer than average, and that in turn making it harder to trim their nails, making them scared of it. If you are willing to work on preventing and alieviating co morbid conditions even an unethicially bred dog can lead as full and healthy a life as a champion line or ethically bred dog, but there for sure needs to be more regulation with breeders and dog ownership to make sure that happens. That applies to all dog breeds, not just the brachy ones.

    A lot of ethical breeders who breed the smushed face dog breeds are starting to breed out the smushed faces. Like you said, they are trying to breed longer snouts, unfortunately that is going to take a few generations before it becomes the more common trait since there was so much emphasis on the smushed faces for so long.

    I'm almost crying watching this. A few weeks ago at the shelter I volunteer at we had to put our frenchie River down for exactly the same problem. One day our coordinator came in and saw his back half was completely paralysed and he was in so much pain. Ultimately the vet and coordinator agreed that euthanasia was the best course of action for our River. He was a grumpy Gus and hard to home so had been with us for over half a year, we were devastated at his loss. I'm so so happy you and the family didn't have to suffer that with Honey Bun and that she is making a full recovery. Further warning for all Frenchie lovers out there (as well as the other breeds susceptible) IVDD is more common amongst poorly bred dogs! Sadly with rescues poor breeding is often a given, but if you are thinking of buying this is one of the reasons it's so incredibly important to do your research into breeders and buy responsibly not just the easiest or cheapest option.

    The only responsible way to get a dog when overpopulation has long been out of control....is not to go to a breeder at all. If you actually care about the millions of amazing dogs dying in shelters every year, that is. Endorsing someone who creates lives while we destroy so many others to make room? There is no such thing as a good breeder, no matter how much 'cope' a person can muster. ADOPT DON'T SHOP

  • @BriWolf112

    @BriWolf112

    2 ай бұрын

    @@MG-pj2oo obviously I'm completely on board for adoption but the ultimate reality is that there are always going to be people who go to breeders. Which is why it's important to encourage those people to at the very least go to breeders that do their best to ensure healthy puppies and help limit overpopulation by insisting that all puppies bought from them are fixed. I'm an advocate for looking into adoption first and buying second.

    My pup passed away In 2014 at only 5 years old due to complications from IVDD, and it was one of the hardest moments of my life. Since losing Benny, we’ve focused on owning pups with health issues, but after losing 2 more since then and seeing how it affects my kids, we’ve had to hold off on caring for special needs pups for the time being. Our only boy at this time is fairly healthy thank goodness, but special needs dogs need love too and we’re likely going to open our hearts again soon. The pain of losing them just hurts so much. 😢❤

    I have a rescue dog which is a mix we've had in our family since... I was 2? Maybe 1 even! He's still alive but we also have a chocolate lab. A couple months ago my mom had to fly him to Nassau, Bahamas so he could have emergency surgery as well. Turned out, he scrounged up a baby coconut seed??? Since then he's been in love with sea animals for some reason. Poor Honeybun! Sending love to y'all!

    I had a freak out from my cat when she was a year old, I heard her LITERALLY ripping her fur out, from ribcage and down her back legs, followed by a rash, I took her picture of the rash which was everywhere including around her butt, and shared them on the Facebook cat groups asking if they have or had a cat or cats that this happened to. A majority came in half was possible bug bites but others said food allergy. Course I took it seriously but I wanted to know by her vet, she too said food allergy. Ever since then I feed her seafood only ingredient cat food. As the rash was going away and her fur was coming back I thanked everybody on the groups using what would Mae's words.

    We have pill boxes for every member of the household and the dogs are no exception. Whilst our dogs aren't on any perscribed meds, just supplements, it has been a lifesaver for keeping their med's separate if one is on antibiotics or they're due worming. We have a spainel and a pug and they have a minimum 7kg weight difference (our pug is on the petite side) and thus they take vastly different doses of the same wormer etc so we can't go mixing them up. We have ones with 4x daily slots so if they need to take an antibiotic a few times a day it can be dosed out in 1 go.

    This exact thing happened to my french bulldog! We also had to get this same surgery and my poor boy was on bedrest with IV's and had to stay with the vet for almost a full week. Then when we brought him home we had to keep him sedated and in an enclosed space for another 3 weeks as he recovered getting medication around the clock. It truly was so tough to see him like that but It's been about 3 months now post-op and our boy is back to being his rambunctious self! Very grateful to have our healthy boy back. Sending love to you and Honey bun❤

    I'm so relieved that she has recovered so well. Maybe when she is feeling better you could reward her with an anything she wants from the pet store. I just rescued a miniature Border Collie and she was one of eight pups. Sadly, she was the only one who made it because the owner set out the mom and pups. So glad you all gave Honey Bun a good home with lots of love and two great sisters (Blueberry and Coconut).

    I know exactly what this is like to have in a dog. Just a little bit over a year ago my precious dog Mia had to get put down. She didn’t have a split disc but instead a ruptured one. We monitored her and ended up taking her to the vets a day or two after due to trouble getting her in. She was in lots of pain and as well was paralyzed from the waist down. I begged my parents to do surgery but it they said no because the surgery had a high chance of not working. So we put her down because it came down to what quality of life she would have if given the surgery.

    I have a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard dog and they’re known to have slipped discs too as well as arthritis 😢 luckily my big boy hasn’t had any problems yet but I’m glad Honey Bun is getting better 🥰

    I'm glad Honey Bun is doing much better.! My shepherd had hip dysplasia. She passed away peacefully 3 years ago of stomach cancer. We miss her every day,

    I had a German Shepherd for 8 years. One day we came home and he wasn't able to stand and he was having a lot of accidents because he couldn't get up to go to the bathroom. We took him to the vet and they did surgery but unfortunately it never got better 😞 he struggled and we ended up losing him. I'm so glad that honey bun is doing better
