I believe we lost Mama Cass too early also Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, John Bonham (Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly, Big Bopper - The Day the Music DIED) to name a few.

Janis lived her life hard and fast and, unfortunately, that led to the heroin overdose that took her life. Her most well known songs are probably Me and Bobby McGee and Piece of My Heart, but Tell Mama, Cry Baby, and Summertime are great Janis songs. RIP Pearl 🙏

Janis Joplin was relatively unknown at this time. She was only about a year into her professional music career. But she blew everyone away with her rendition of Ball & Chain". Interesting Note: The lady watching Janis performing here at The Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 is Cass Elliott from the group "The Mamas & The Papas". Her mouth drops & she mouths “Wow" after a particularly strong vocal run from Janis.

Janis in my opinion, the top of the top when it comes to authentic communication in song. Her voice cannot be replicated naturally. Her death was devastating to so many. Want more Janis? Cry Baby, Bobby McGee; Summertime, the list goes on. Glad y’all found this incredible woman’s talent A true one of a kind and an icon lost much too soon.

" Her death was devastating to so many." Yes, and so unnecessary. The heroin she injected was found to be 50% pure and according to the report it is normally only 3% pure. Seven others died that weekend from the same batch. She had been clean for 6 months and they figured her body has lost its resistance to heroin and it just stopped her heart. In this video she is 24 in another 3 years she is dead at 27.

Her microphone technique on this song is outstanding. She absolutely knows what she is doing with it.

This performance, along with Jimi's "Hey Joe" that you also watched, were both performed at the Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967.

I saw Janis live in 1970 in Calgary, Alberta......A fantastic soulful singer , she puts it all into every song. Very unique. This was at the Monterey Pop Festival 1967. The woman in the audience is Mama Cass from The Mamas and Papas.

This performance took place on Sunday evening, June 18th, 1967 at the Monterey Pop Festival. Janis had performed the day before but it hadn't been captured on film so she did this shorter second set so it could be captured in all its glory.

Best female vocalist to have ever graced this planet. She was basically a nobody when she walked on that stage and when she walked off she was signed to a contract on the spot.

That's just awesome!

She was a crossover between rock and roll and soul singer. But her biggest achievement was the passion that she brought to the table and opened up the door for other women rock and rollers.

I love watching people react to this video of Janis at Monterrey Pop in ’67… every time people are blown away and SHOULD be! There will never be another singer who can belt out the blues with such raw, unvarnished emotion. RIP Janis.

this performance at Monterey pop festival is where she was discovered by the great Clive Davis who was in the audience, and that was Mama Cass Elliot in the audience from the Mamas and Papas looking on in amazement. Great reaction

The lady indeed was Singer, Mama Cass Elliott from The Mamas and the Papas fame.

First off... Love you and your reactions !! as a side note. Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company (relative "Unknowns" from San Francisco) played the first day of Monterey, to rave reviews. The cinematographer, D.A. Pennebacker, was late to arrive and the first day was not recorded on film, so the promoters (this year the promoters were John and Michelle Phillips. "half" of the very popular group, "The Mama's and the Papa's". (That's why "Mama" Cass Elliot was featured in the recording) invited Janis back on the last day to perform "Ball & Chain" again, to be filmed. Her backing group feared Janis would be signed leaving them to fend for themselves. The promoters also informed a bunch of "record labels", that this sensational women was going to perform again on the last day, so about 8 record companies offered her a contract, and she signed with Clive Davis from Colombia Records. The rest, as they say... "Is history" !!

Yep, the awestruck audience member was Mama Cass, who at the time was already famous, while Janis was still relatively unknown outside the San Francisco music scene when this was recorded.

Old guy here who saw her live. A passionate performer but she wasn't one of these pop stars who would get all dolled up and sexy. She was a natural "this is who I am, warts and all" type of person. I did audio work for years. As far as the mic goes, I think it did OK. Back then there were good studio vocal mics but not a whole lot of top quality choices in stage mics. Also, Janis was a screamer. The gain had to be set high enough to pick up her quiet passages but not so high to distort when she got loud. Fortunately, she was smart enough to back off from the mic when emoting.

Another one of the 27 Club. Along with John Belushi and others. Sound system was perfect she was playing the Mike. She knew how to work the mic fade-in fade-out Etc. That's a people did back then with the sound systems.

Good to see other generations trying to understand the 1960s vibes going on here. I've heard other people compare Janis' voice and delivery to Robert Plant's. Both artists were heavily inspired by blues singers like Big Mama Thornton. But I've always thought that she must've listened to a lot of early James Brown, as well. Some things are just universal to Blues singing, I guess. By the way: I loved watching your daughter react to this video -- she totally gets it! ;-)

Joplin's version of "Summertime" is the one most people think of rather than the original _ The two very similiar songs Cry Baby Cry and Maybe, though it is like splitting hairs, i like Maybe first _ Joplin did a song on the "Dick Cavett Show" called Little Girl Blue that is one of her lesser known songs, but i love it, from the Pearl album i think _ And her very popular "Me and Bobby McGee" i never took to that song, especially compared to "Piece of My Heart", or "Move over", or "Try", or Get It While You Can, and "Ball and Chain" of coarse, and yes those shoes, Janis can really kick it wearing those . . . :>/

Janis as child listen to. Bessie Smith, and other blues Artists. If you listen to Bessie sing you can tell Janis's influence. RIP Janis She died a 27 of a heroin overdose. It was at that time drugs were popular for artists. Most unfortunately many great musical geniuses died before there time. I was young then and had many of their albums. I cried many tears of their passings. (Janis Joblin Summertime) you will love it

Janis pushed many limits. Cass Elliot showed that in her appreciation of Janis. She was a key to transitioning the sound and lyrics of music in the '60's. I have long wondered where music would be today if she had 20 more years to influence progress. Lost too soon.

This is what you get before you totally corrupt the music with electronic madness. This is it, the mostest way it should be. Perfection isn't always perfect. When Janis left the stage she had given her soul. Once I was at a birthday party for Bo Diddly, (he invented a hole portion of rock that Bo Diddly beat)) His bass player was the band leader. When he did a show he used them. After about an hour she is frowning .. it gets worse. She keeps trying to get him to the side and close the show. After about four hours she dies 100 times, so pissed. Two roadies stand on the stair to the steps up to the stage,. Bo just falls over into their arms and they drag/carry him to his RV. on October 1, she performed "Mercedes Benz" in the studio for fun. On October 4, she never showed up for recording, so her manager John Cooke traveled to the Landmark Motor Hotel where she was staying (via Unlimited Classic Rock). There, he found Joplin's body after an accidental overdose.

Long time ago after I saw Led Zeppelin at Montréal where I live, a critic of the newspaper the day after this show, comment not necessary like you about the similarity of their voice but said about Robert Plant; No body could have a show like him or can not been more sensual than Robert Plant or excepted Janis Joplin. Two solo albums and two with Big Brother. With "Mercedes Benz" recorded I think three days before her death. That little laugh at the end of Mercedes Benz is such a sadness...

We typically go into this as blind as we can to get a real reaction to everything. Afterwards we learn some stuff from the comments and we go look it up. Sometimes it just feels like if we look stuff up beforehand, it can ruin some of the surprise or suspense of the song/artist
