She Filmed Herself Confronting Her “Racist” Uber Driver. It Backfired.
Today I’m reacting to a viral TikTok of a woman filming herself confronting her Uber driver over comments he made about Asians. Was she right to stop the ride, call him out, and post the video online? Or is this just another case of over-sensitivity to perceived racism? Let’s watch.

I know this is another echo chamber channel but I have to say this take is bad. If someone who interacts with customers shows racism a company would sack them to avoid backlash, to protect the people of that race and keep a certain standard of customer service. That means practically anyone has the power to get someone fired depending on the actions of the customer service provider. In this instance of course it was not racism but personally I feel it was understandable ignorance and all she had to do was explain and not over-react. This was not an instance that got him fired hopefully partially because most people are disagreeing with her and clearly it was not racism.

You are confusing the power to fire with the ability to plead a case. Anyone and any group can plead a case. The people that get to make the decision- aka the power to fire still belong to the hegemony.

And when I tell you, many times a day I think to myself “damn…many of them look the exact same”. I do not believe it’s a racism thing. I think it’s simply an ethnic thing. First she is saying "them" is the keyword to recognize racism - and then she uses "us" for herself. When you are seeking problems, you will find problems. I am so happy that she didn't get the reactions from the internet that she actually wanted.
I am from South Africa and, whilst travelling in America, when people asked where I was from because of my accent, 99% of the time the immediate response was "but you are not black!" (almost like a shock knee jerk reaction) I found this very funny and only appreciated their curiosity as it gave me a chance to explain my country to them. Curiosity should never be "offensive". This is how we get dumbed down as a society. Curiosity is key to education. Education is key to understanding. Understanding is key to tolerance. Tolerance is the key to rid ourselves of racism.

She measures her response based on the intent of the person asking. If they're literally well-meaning and just curious, she'll kindly tell them. Only 1-2 times in the near decade we've been together has someone come off intentionally snarky / rude / mean-hearted...to which she either ignores them, or replies with "figure it out on your own time - have a blessed day!" I honestly find myself getting more upset in those rare instances than she does - but then again, she's so graceful and kind in all she does, it's just natural for her to handle even the most uncomfortable situations with such class. That's the way it usually goes. Someone sees something, makes a guess based on their own knowledge, experience, assumptions, etc... asks that person about it... and then the person is wrong. And then you have a conversation about that. I'm mixed race of a few and people ask me if I'm Mexican, Native American, etc all the time. I'm not, not even close, but it doesn't offend me at all. It's often even hard to tell where someone's actually from even if they're native. There was that one Japanese guy (I think Yuta or something) with a KZread video where he asked Japanese people if they could recognize from which south-eastern Asian country people were from. And... they had just as much of a hard time telling as non-Asians would. Even for Japanese people themselves they had a hard time telling. It's just dumb to assume someone knows everything about you just by 1 look. Not just dumb, it's very arrogant. And then getting mad about it as well. In 1998, I was flying from Washington, DC to Arlanda, Sweden. My seat mate for the first leg of the journey was a Sikh man. When passengers got settled in and the flight stewards were finished with the safety demonstration, one came through the cabin, verifying meals. She asked my name and verified my vegetarian meal, and then the man in the seat beside me, and he confirmed, too. She grinned, and in a friendly nature, surmised we must be friends, since we had the same meal types, side by side. We all smiled and laughed, understanding it was humor meant put us at ease before a long flight. As a vegetarian for a decade at that point, I'd heard far less kind things - even cruel and threatening at times - directed towards me. My seatmate struck up conversation with me (I'm of NW European origins, he of Indian origin), asking how I came to be vegetarian. He then shared with me that it is a feature of his culture and faith as a Sikh. We had a wonderful conversation over the hours of the flight, celebrated our vegetarian meals, and talked more. At the end of the flight, we shook hands and wished each other well and departed. I would like to think my experience was not an aberration, but the norm among decent, civil people everywhere.
It's always interesting when I watch videos of people filming themselves being upset. If I were being victimized, I would point the camera at my offender. That makes a stronger case. That didn't happen here, so it shows that she considers herself to be self-important and that the rest of the world by default should adore her and admire her courage. Her acting is laughable. Thanks for your spot-on analysis.
It breaks my heart, he’s trying so hard to explain but it’s clear his language barrier was inhibiting him in noticing how certain words offended her. She bullied him and he is clearly afraid of what she’ll do to him and his reputation. All he tried to do was ask question to learn about her and educate himself better. She could have helped him, maybe even give him some sentence examples to better get across his curiosity and learn easier. instead she used this as a chance to be a victim and get internet brownie points and sympathy. . Horrible woman, glad it backfired.
I'm Asian (Korean), and I get asked all the time what I am because people can't tell, which is totally fine. It's not meant to hurt or degrade you. Yes! I grew up in S.F., in the Richmond District, a mixed salad of ethnicities with a variety of Asians. As a kid, I was always interested in the cultural distinctions between groups and over time I acquired the ability to observe subtle patterns in appearance that might indicate ethnicity. Instead of being offended by my guess, they were entertained by my curiosity and surprised by my frequency of guessing correctly. I would follow up by saying hello or using a phrase in their native language. This never offended anyone, and instead was met with a smile that opened the door to friendship - enduring friendships now many decades old. The best man in my wedding is half Chinese. Fast forward some years and my young blonde son was the ring bearer in his sister's wedding. At the altar, his blonde hair stood out like a soar thumb in a line up that was otherwise entirely Asian. 😄 To think, the beginning of our friendship and discovery of what would become my second family all started when I was 11, after I approached a kid in boy scouts and guessed his father was a serviceman and his mother Japanese. (She's Chinese, but met his father in Japan... Close enough!) I'll never understand how she was offended. I might easily do the same thing with no intention beyond starting a friendly conversation, which I believe was his intention as well. What she did will probably change his attitude toward Asians. His caution will make him seem cold and unfriendly, which may be interpreted as racist by Asians meeting him in the future. These leaps to accusations of racism in the absence of racism only makes things worse. Plus, she blew an opportunity to reciprocate and inquire about his background - to learn and build another bridge between cultures. Damn shame.

Secondly, I'm surprised and also not surprised that you managed to find out my ethnicity, probably thanks to your screen-addicted nature. Firstly, let me state that I agree with you. People of our generation are intellectually and morally crippled. They've been unexposed to a lot of hardship and forgot about the higher purpose that is in dealing with it. Then there's your case; why the heck are you so caught up on dogs and cats? It wrenches any person's heart to see such disfigurement. Once, 2 mice got caught in a trap I set in my house. They were pests and as a man in my household, I took up my duty to painlessly kill them. It was an awful experience. I don't like death. No one does. Change, however, does not come through starting needless arguments online or forcing your worldview on others. Are you out in nature saving the animals? Pushing for more eco-friendly codes? What have you besides a nihilistic attitude and a willingness to dig up information on strangers online? You put that well. I was feeling the same thing. They young ladies condescension and arrogance is amazing.
I’m an ethnic Chinese Singaporean and have lived in Scotland for 6 years. I went to my local chippie and after placing my order the lady there said to me, while she was cooking, in her Scottish accent: “you have a strange accent! Where are you from?” I told her I’m from Singapore and she explained afterwards that while I looked Chinese, I did not sound Chinese, and was simply curious because she had never met a person like me before in all of her life making fish and chips at that store. She was very friendly and we had a nice conversation about what life in Scotland and Singapore was like for me. Nothing racist there!

I was just on a day tour in Scotland a week ago, and our tour guide was talking to my husband, myself (U.S.), and my Aunt who lives in Surrey, England. He was trying to guess where we were from based on our accents, and my Aunt's was completely throwing him off. Because while she has been living back in England for 7 years now, she moved to the states in her 30's and lived there for 30 years, so she had lost some of her accent. He was a lovely man who was just curious.

Considering the context of the video, your comment is fairly dismissive to bring up. On first glance, your comment has a lot to do with the experiences of the Asian in the video but looking deeper, it's quite different. Also, the experiences of those who emigrated later in life versus those who were born or emigrated earlier in their life tend to be much different.

A true apology is not the words you use (ie I'm sorry) but the action to try and never repeat that original action again, otherwise it's like someone slapping you in the face, and saying sorry over and over again. How many times do you accept their apology before you realize they don't mean it? Forgive, change, remove yourself if need be, and move forwards. If you've done wrong, apologize and take the steps to make the positive changes you need to become a better person for yourself and for those around you, regardless if it's constant contact or a once off.

I need people DESPERATELY to understand that when the left want you out of your job - they ARE trying to kill you. No income so you can’t keep up with rent/house payment, utilities, gas, groceries, medicines if you take them, etc. Sooner or later you’ll be out of shelter and at the whims of society, or dead. Your job is your means of obtaining goods and services legally in exchange for cash. They WANT to destroy you. They just don’t want to get blood on their shoes while at it, so they take more passive aggressive routes to their enemies’ death.
