She Does It AGAIN! - Onboard Lifestyle ep.273

On this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle, Linh takes the lead mechanic role and digs deep into both of our Yanmar 3YM30's to resolve our pesky overheating issue. Did we mention that she does this while simultaneously baking focaccia bread, definitely a slam dunk performance. Teal, Emma, and HDI Marine get the assist. Come back next week to see what else is on our plate...see you then!

Teal, as Professional Mechanic , a little suggestion for cleaning gaskets. I find that soaking the old gasket with a spray lube like WD-40 (Or just brush on some diesel fuel, it works in a pinch) it does two things. 1) It loosens the bond of the old gasket to the metal and swells it up a bit 2) It also lubricates the razor blade to glide over the machine surface, preventing it from digging in and gouging.

Teal: She.... folds up nicely. Put her in a suitcase take her anywhere. Unpack her- she immediately bakes bread & fixes the nearest engine problem. Linh: I got this. Order engine parts from 5k miles away. Help husband install parts. And make focaccia bread too. No big deal to me. Emma: My room is a mess. A minor inconvenience. Best education you will ever get is... learning from your parents and their mistakes. Compass: No where to be found. I surely thought that he would inspect the new engine part boxes. It is his boat after all. Glad this problem with the port engine overheating is fixed. Check that box off your list. Onboard this boat the Lifestyle is southward. Safe travels crew of Basix.

Well, I had a crack at the bread yesterday and it wasn't too shabby! I think that I will use a touch more yeast next time and maybe a little more water - my mixture appeared to be a little stiffer than yours. At the insistence of she who must be obeyed, I added a small quantity of chopped olives to ours, at that stage where you transferred the mix to the baking pan. I sprinkled some on the top, then folded one third over them, then sprinkled some more on that and folded the final third over them. I confess, it was delicious and she who must be obeyed was correct in thinking it would be a nice touch.

That's awesome! Yes, sometimes you will need to adjust the yeast (depending on how old it is), and water based on the humidity and altitude. The best thing about focaccia bread is adding any toppings of your choice. Olives, rosemary, coarse salt are always a hit. So happy to hear you liked it! Cheers!

I learned as a young boy that some women are as good or better than men at things you wouldn’t expect. After a storm downed a tree in a neighbor’s yard I witnessed my mother cut through the 10” trunk in with an axe, in a perfect V, with chips the size of a fist flying - something she learned to do with a 12lb double-blade lumberjack axe as a farm girl in the 1930s during the Great Depression to help with the family charcoal business. She was only 5’ 6” and slight of built but had an intuitive talent for solving problems and had figured out how to use leverage, momentum and gravity to do the work. During WWII she was trained as a machinist and solved a problem which stumped all the engineers and managers at the aerial camera factory where she ran milling machine. The leaf shutter was warping and sticking. She put the shutter in a vise between two hardwood dowels and gave it a whack with a hammer to flatten it. That fixed the problem and became one of the production steps. She might have invented “If it doesn’t work hit it with a hammer!” She became a Cub Scout leader when I was five and we’d buy her power tools for Christmas for her projects. She also taught me how to throw a curve ball and really set the bar high for finding the right soul mate. Seems you struck gold with that Teal. 😊

somedogy advice to help with the re-install - the bolts on the exhaust manifold ideally should have "never seize " (nickel based) and if you are trying to get hoses on to new fittings - a little bit of dishwashing liquid. this process makes up for the obvious strength differences between Teal and LinH. Good effort all round. the manifolds are notorious bits of junk.

I got a recipe from a sweet Fijian elder, been a family secret for ever, her daughter and I worked together. And she thought I was lovely, so she sent it. Hi guys, it’s so good when you can deal with people that know what they’re talking about I have a can-am Ryker Which is made in America/Canada, and I can get parts for that faster than I can buy it here in Australia. It sounds ridiculous but they can send it within four or five days. I will have it here in Australia anyway. Hope everything goes well for you guys. Keep up the good work really love and appreciate you all, Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia 🇦🇺🧑🏾‍🦽

For the part that cracked part you may wish to keep it because you can weld stainless steel and it would make a good emergency repair. Nice time to see if JB Weld works on stainless as well ......😁👌👀........... enjoy

Have you guys looked into OC Tenders? There is no air to go flat. The Wynns are getting one for their new boat and LaVagabond also just got one. Swamping them is almost impossible, and they last a lot longer. They are out of NZ and built really well.
