Most people know this song as Carol of the Bells, but the original belongs to the Ukrainian carol Shchedryk, and it was Ukraine that created this masterpiece that has been heard throughout the world for centuries. I want more people to know about it and differentiate the versions. Of course, the English version is good, but I am very glad that the original belongs to Ukraine

Little mistake - for centuries - not through the whole world, just in Ukraine. It started widely known after it was presented on the concert of Ukrainian choir in 1919 in New York and translated in English. It became very popular very quickly. It is very old originally - first words of the song say that the small bird returned home in spring after spending winter somewhere in South. This song came from times when people celebrated New Year at the start of spring.

This song is very old. Hundreds of years ago, even before Christianity, Ukrainians celebrated the new year in the spring. And the traditional songs were wishes for a good harvest and a healthy herd of domestic animals (and, accordingly, prosperity) in the new year. That is why the original text contains the words "a swallow flew in" because migratory birds return to Ukraine in the spring, and "lambs were born" also happens in the spring. But the words "your goods are all good, you will have a lot of money" because in ancient times people lived from what they grew and sold, then these words are a wish for the owner of a good profit. When Christianity came to our land, many pagan holidays were replaced by Christian ones (imposed on top). (for an easier transition) And although this song had nothing to do with Christmas, it was traditionally continued to be sung, because there is nothing unchristian or bad about wishing for well-being. Thus, this song, through the centuries, has survived to our time. As well as carols (kolyadky), shchedrivky(Songs of wishes for well-being) and freckles (vesnyanka - Songs calling for spring). By the way, the most famous Ukrainian vesnyanka (pagan traditional song of summoning spring), which is many hundreds of years old, is "SHUM". Performed by Go_A, it took second place at Eurovision in 2021. We are a young country, but our culture is very ancient

This song is a thousand years old, because Christianity was introduced to our land - Kievan Rus' a long time ago. Then our state was one of the leading countries in the world, then there was an invasion of the Tatars on our land, the hetmanship, then slavery in Russia, and here we are again reborn and fighting for our independence.

Here is another eye opener about the song. The original lyrics in Ukrainian which have been translated here into English do not mention Christmas, Christ, caroling, bells, or even winter. Instead they make references to the beginning of spring, e.g swallow coming back after seasonal migration, cattle giving birth to their calves and lambs... This is probably because the song dates back to the ancient tradition of celebrating new year in spring, not in January.

Yes, you are right: it does have pagan origins - the antient (Ukrainian) Slavs regarded spring as the start of a year. Over time, as Christian priests tried to rebrand pre-existing traditions, it lead to turning the song into a Christmas Carol even though it's not mentioned directly in the lyrics. See some of the pointers in kzread.info/dash/bejne/fX96m9WAgrmahso.html

Your goods [livestock] are great, you will have a lot of money, [by selling them]. If not money, then chaff: [from all the grain you will harvest] You have a dark-eyebrowed [beautiful] wife." Shchedryk, shchedryk, a shchedrivka, A little swallow flew. Shchedryk, shchedryk, a shchedrivka, A little swallow flew. Shchedryk, shchedryk, a shchedrivka; A little swallow flew And started to twitter, To summon the master: "Come out, come out, Oh master, Look at the sheep pen, There the ewes have yeaned And the lambkins have been born. I think you should know a little more about the history of this song and the author of the melody, Mykola Leontovych. He composed "Shchedryk" in 1904 (premiered in 1916). He was murdered by a Soviet agent in 1921.

I am Ukrainian and we have this New Year's song, although it has nothing to do with winter. "Shchedrik" is the name of this original, and it is a purely pagan song about the new year, which, as we know, began in ancient times - in the fall. It is sung about a swallow that flew in and began to call the master, praising his labor, the bountiful harvest and the fact that now he would have money in abundance.

When you said "I can't help appreciating the sound of the sound of the language itself, it's beautiful" you said something that it is so important for Ukrainians to hear and to know! I have a Ukrainian friend who has some Russian relatives, and she told me that she has so often heard that Ukrainian is an ugly language by these relatives - and told her that she should speak Russian instead. So when I let her know that Ukrainian language is beautiful with a lot of soul, I said something that ment a lot to her.

Shortly before he was killed by the communists in 1921, the Ukrainian composer and choir conductor Leontovych toured America. So his adaptation of the Ukrainian folk carol Shchedryk became very popular. Since then, his Shchedryk has become popular in the West. So the Ukrainian version is the first, the original one. There are many options for its implementation. All the rest are secondary, including the English one.

Unfortunately, it is a sad Christmas in Ukraine now The songs are more than one year old. But the war in Ukraine has been going on for many years. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lZ5_07qAl9mcm6Q.html А prayer for Christmas 1 At Christmas, on Holy Evening, the little ones gathered, Mother has already put the corner on the table. We are missing someone in the house: "Children, dad, ours is fighting, We pray that he will return." Chorus: That prayer at Christmas will keep him in battle, And Olenka waited for her dad. Nicholas and all the saints, return him to me, And there is no need to give anything more. 2 Virgin Mary, a black wind blows from the east, I want him to bypass our house. Our Ivasyk was born, he just got a tooth, He has never seen his dad before. Chorus: That prayer at Christmas will keep him in battle, And Olenka waited for her dad. Nicholas and all the saints, return him to me, And there is no need to give anything more. 3 Nikolas straightened his mustache, scratched his beard, I asked all the angels - those who were in the war: "Is Olenka's father alive, will he return to the village?". They don't take his grenades - the Mother of God saved her. Chorus: That prayer at Christmas protected him in battle, And Olenka waited for her dad. Nicholas and all the saints, save it for me, And there is no need to give anything more.

"A swallow flew in and start call a master" thats mean spring come, because birds came back, so nature wakes and masters can go do their property to good shape after winter and gardening finally ))) Song about master, householder, well served property, nice good family, respect at community for fair work, for developed house and yard, carol is such a praise to a master, thats all about ukrainian mentality. That motive super ancient. From Cucuteny-Trypillya culture till today we like to grow to improve our houses and suroundings. Just never try to get away a garden, house, property from a Ukrainian, hundreds of defunct empires made this mistake, but Ukrainians still dig in their garden beds to this day, mostly as a hobby in the country house.

When Word war 1 was almost finished, Ukrainian started its fight for independence. Shchedryk was represented to the Europe and Canada, and USA during big World tour, to show Ukrainian culture as a unique culture of people, that wanted to realise their right to have their own sovereign country (and the war for freedom was still going on the territory). It was not realised then. But Ukrainians as an independent political nation started their way). And Leontivych was killed by Russian special agents, by the way..
