Great list but I love love love Mad Monkey Kung Fu, it has one of the most iconic opening scenes and training scenes in Shaw Brothers history.

Thank you 🙏 It is a good film and has some awesome training / fight scenes. There's just a couple things that take it down a few pegs for me 😅 Cheers!

mostly agree with your list def Boxers Omen my least favorite - knew 36th Chamber would be number one since that’s such a great film. Think your number 5 I might bump down a bit and let’s hope no monkeys were injured like you mentioned in Mad Monkey Kung Fu.

Ah... very nice. Glad you're kinda on the same page with these haha. And yeah, really hoping it was just a prop monkey :-/

@@thesharphandpath5027 it was a prop monkey, but clearly the animal doesn't have a great time. A word of warning, there are a lot of Golden harvest films where chickens get killed!

I bought this set primarily to have Boxer's Omen. It's one of my favorite films of all time😂

The director did many films for Shaw of all different genres. His Kung Fu entry, Killer Constable is a must see.

That's absolutely hilarious, but hey, to each their own! Art is subjective, and if it worked for you, that's great! Thanks for watching 🙏💚🙏

You're two bottom were two of my top surprises. Really enjoyed Mercenaries from Hong Kong and Boxer's Omen. One super fun 80s action and the other off the wall awesome fantasy horror. Loved them. You want martial arts movies, you get them in this set but I love these gems too! I think your outfit in the video maybe explains what you wanted out of the set and the low ranking. But hey, all good! Like everyone, I definitely dig 36 Chambers!

My outfit is my at-home training gi with my clan's name / crest on the back, and crest on the front. I actually do a couple different Martial Arts in real life 😁 But yes, definitely more into the hand-to-hand combat style Shaw Brothers films. Thanks for checking out the ranking!

Excelent overview, I purchased both Shawscope sets but sold Volume 2 finding most of the films to be weak and very overrated.

Oh wow! So I guess it's easy to say you probably won't be picking up any of the Shout Factory "Shaw Brothers Classics" box sets?

I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on these films Jessie. I agree with you on the bottom 4, I thought they were all not so great - I didn't like the Jet Li film ,even though there are some fantastic scenes in it , it doesn't feel like a Shaw film. I think 10 tigers is really overrated, its one of my least favourite Venom films and its a mess but thats more to do with the problems around making it. I think Lau Kar-leung was brave with the sequels to 36th chamber, other directors would have just churned out the same movie again ,but showing San Te from different perspectives was quite brave. 5 super fighters is ok ,I think the idea of someone chastising people for being bad at kung fu is quite funny, but it's a Shaw film with no star power ,and they made a good few of those. I think the remaining Chang Cheh venom mob movies are superb, and my order changes depending on how I feel on any given day . The remaining Lau Kar-leung films are some of my very favourites of all time. He explores the master pupil relationship from so many different perspectives and angles - in Mad Monkey kung fu he takes the crippled master character to a different level -honestly I proper love that film and was literally fist pumping the air during the final fight . 36th Chamber is Gordon Lius most iconic role and there isn't much point going into it ,but it was so inspirational for so many directors and thank you for not calling him Master Killer ,god please !!! My young auntie is probably my favourite on the set, culturally it looks at how China was being left behind by Hong Kong and Kara Wai is superb in it . The thing that pi$$es me off is how even though she has the main role ,she still needs a man to save her, but this is true of every Shaw film ,equality did not happen back then. Also she was going out with Lau Kar-leung at the time ,but I am sure he wouldn't have given her lead roles if she wasn't great ,and she was great . Oh Shaw brothers made and bossted a new film "every 9 days "which given how long it takes to make a movie these days ,is mind blowing . In around 78/79 they made around 22 kung fu films a year ,plus all the other genres as well . Lau Kar-leung's brother is Lau Ker Wing and their adopted brother is Gordon liu. The Shawscope sets didn't include any films by some of the other really important Shaw directors (Sun Chung ,Chor Yuen etc ) but the Shout sets do . I really enjoyed listening to your opinions on this Jessie ,fist and palm salute .

Thanks for your thoughts my friend! And yeah, I dunno why anyone would call Monk San Te "Master Killer". It never says it in the movie 🤷‍♀️ 5 Superfighters was pretty good still considering the lack of any recognizable actors, I'll have to watch it a few more times. Maybe it'll grow on me. I agree that it seemed weird they tried to keep "saving" Kara Wai even tho she clearly didn't need the help haha. But maybe that was the point, she didn't NEED their help but the dumbass men kept trying to haha. I'm about to dive into the first volume of Shaw Bros Classics soon. I just wanted to focus on this ranking video first without more Shaw Bros clouding my memory. 🙏 Xiexie & Wanan 🙏

@@thesharphandpath5027 you will find the tone of the first Shout set very different. Although Shaw brothers had been around for years before, they were still finding their feet (and fists) in terms of wuxia and later kung fu cinema. Lo Lieh was a real big hero in those films but by the 70's he was one of the villians of choice in so many films. The more films you watch, the more your perspective of what their take on Kung fu cinema was and is. They made an awful lot of excellent films and very few of them really suck, for one studio producing that many films, like all the time, the level of quality is astounding. If you want to see just how many Kung you /wuxia films they made, search up Silver emulsion Shaw brothers - it's the most complete list I can find. I look forward to hearing your views on the first Shout set!

Honestly can't wait! I find there are a few eras of Shaw Bros where certain actors/ actresses are grouped up quite often / regularly for a stretch of films then it switches. Thanks again for weighing in on this 🙏😊🙏
