I was wondering how he was gonna play this fiddle tune without a fiddle but I gotta admit he sure pulled it off. Shawn is a very talented musician, of that there is no doubt. Everyone who already hasn't should check out his tribute to Flatt and Scruggs band, Earls of Leicester, that was put together by the great Jerry Douglas. Bluegrass done the old, and in my opinion, best way!

I first heard Ricky Skaggs version of this song and I was initially impressed with this young man's skill in making his guitar sound like a fiddle but he lost me when he called Sis Draper the 'devil's daughter'. Sorry, like Ricky's line better, "Sis Draper is her Daddy's daughter..."
@danielmorris3687

Shawn sings it the way it was written. Ricky is too religious to sing it the original way. He notoriously also changed a line in 40 Highway Blues that originally mentioned having a beer. I suppose he deserves to be respected for his beliefs but he takes it a bit far in my opinion.

He also changed another Guy Clark line in "Heartbroke." The original is "Pride is a bitch and a bore when you're lonely." The Skaggs version is "Crying when you're rich . . ." which makes absolutely no sense to me.

Faust? Robert Johnson? Devil at the crossroads? Striking that deal to play the fiddle/guitar (or do whatever else) the best anyone ever has in exchange for your soul? Familiar with these stories or ideas at all? And the song references a jealous grandmother, jealous because grandpa used to date Sis. “Sis Draper is the devil’s daughter” is something grandma might say disparagingly, and an envious country picker might say admiringly. It’s tongue-in-cheek. Folklore. Mythology. You know, the stuff of legend and fairy tale. Relax. It’s just a song, but a brilliant song just the way it is. The way Guy and Shawn wrote it!
