This my old town, where I lived from being born in Oldham in 1973. Our family moved to warmer climates in 84, to Somerset. But joining you on this brilliant tour of hone again feels amazing

Hi Sarah, the old midland bank was a bar called 'Legends' and first opened as a 'Bar' around 1990 and was called the 'Gallery.' The post office hasn't been a post office since 2008. Gonna watch the rest of the vid now. xx

Not been to Shaw for a while. Caught a few fleeting glimpses of my favourite places - the Shay Wake pub and Armstrong's - the chippy! Nice video.

I had a relative who was a Shaw Gawby😄Always liked Shaw years ago because I found it a lot quieter than Oldham and a closer community, There were some good walks nearby too, in Dunwood Park and over Crompton Moor.

Lovely to see your footage of Shaw!! I was born there in 1966 but moved away as an adult. Sadly it is looking a bit rough around the edges these days but many many happy memories of the town & miss it. I might take a trip back there one day. ❤. Thank you! x

I've lived in a village just a few miles away from Shaw for many years and I cycled through the centre of Shaw for the first time just a few months ago. My first impressions were "hmm, this is dead rough". Actually, my last impressions were exactly the same. Real shame because many of the surrounding local areas are extremely attractive and even picturesque.

Loved your video of my home town Sarah you taught me some historic facts that i wasnt aware of, Alsoi have lived in Shaw for 44 years my kids went to st Pauls nursery which was based in the building it really upsets me about the building which i think was a Weslyian building and also the midland bank building that has been left to rack n ruin i am ashamed every time i see them on a daily basis and so the people who are responsible for them have left them in such a state should hang their heads in shame!!! XX

hi Sarah, that old church was bought a few months back and we're going to be turning it into a mosque, the part of the building which collapsed we will be making a car park on that part and the rest of the building we're renovating to be the new Shaw mosque - the old one on Refuge St. was getting too small as it was a 2 bedroom terraced house turned into a mosque and with the growing Muslim population in Shaw, we outgrew it and we had to relocate to a bigger location. The original owners of the church actually had a higher offer than the one we made but those people with the higher offer wanted to turn the church into a nightclub, so the church owners sold it to us even though our offer was lower, because he said it's best that it stays as a place of worship. The part to the left side where the gate is with the "children playing" sign is part of a nursery which was also part of the site when we bought it, we'll most likely be renting it out to be a nursery to generate extra income to go towards the renovation of the mosque (as we're still raising funds for the renevation - gonna be 300k+ in total once its fully completed) :)

i've always said Shaw actually has so much potential if people make the right investments into it, and if they buy all those derelict places and make something out of them it'll be good for this town :)

Hi that's brilliant news. I'm glad to hear your making something of it and yes it should absolutely stay a place of worship. I'd love to come abd gave a look inside if I can when it is complete. I've never been inside a mosque and I believe they are beautiful. I was invited to the massive one in glodwick on an open day once but couldn't make the date due to work xx

Isn't the site a grade 2 listed building? And full of graves? What are you doing to preserve the heritage of the structure? Shaw doesn't need any more car parks, and that section of road is already to busy, I'm staggered that any of this has passed planning permission. Shaw Parish Council are notoriously hard to please for small changes and extensions proposed by local individual homeowners, but seem willing to grant permission for HMO's to property developers cashing in on the area. Our once famous market has been destroyed by the parish council to increase parking, our swimming baths taken, and slowly our heritage is being erased.

Was in Shaw having a mooch about today . It's not as bad as people make it out to be. I dare say there are worse places (anywhere in Rochdale 😂)

The engraving on the stones was so it could be reconstructed. Every stone had a place. Something interesting in the park that most people don’t see is the memorial to the men who lost their lives in the Boer war in South Africa. It’s tucked away by the library

Thirty years since I've been to Shaw. What a shame it is so many buildings are going down. I remember a TV programme called Common as Muck being filmed in the old market and in one of the pubs (cant remember the name) and a cafe. Top cast of well known TV stars in it including Neil Dudgeon, Roy Hudd, Tim Healy and Edward Woodward, plus so many more
