Nice video. I'm a wetshaver and I use a Merkur 34C (similar as the Edwin Jagger DE 89), and I usually put a Feather blade in cause it works best for me. The blade is just fantastic especially when it's new. Anyway, I used to be a Gillette M3 shaver but I always got razorburns and ingrown hairs by the 3-blade system, alot. So, (Steel is the best material in the world, and that means I was going to throw away the plastic stuff and get a safety razor instead).. - HUGE difference the first time though it was very new to me, and also a learning process. So here are some things that I've learned and improved over my 3 years of safety razor shaving. Hope it inspires/ helps. The most important, in my opinion, is to look, feel and learn exactly how your beard grows. If you have sensitive skin and gets irritation easily, try to shave 2 passes instead of the 3 pass shave. What I mean is to ONLY shave in same direction as your hair grows, 2 times in total. Of course, it doesn't give you a very close shave, but a very close shave can be a problem for people who have sensitive skin, and curly/wavy hair. I am one of them, you might also be. It's also important to find the right angle, shave with short strokes and to not use any pressure. 1. Another thing what I've learned is to make your skin "ready". wash your face with hot water to open the tiny openings on your skin (I mean the pores of course) and use a mild soap that doesn't dry your skin, (for example L'Occitane Ultra Rich Face Soap - it contains shea butter which doesn't dry out, my absolute favorite and I use it everytime. Really recommend it). 2. Many people think it's too luxury to use pre-shave oil, but it really helps to prevent all kind of irritation, and soften the beard. But don't use too much. 3. Don't use cheap shaving foam or gel. It dries out very quickly and is often "airy" and not thick at all. Learn how to work up a lather with your shaving brush- Use a shaving soap/cream that you like and lathers up the way you want, and leaves a nice slickness afterwards. For example Derby Shaving Stick, Palmolive Classic Palm Extract, Arko, Proraso. Theres many more, and it really don't have to be an expensive soap to be a very good one. 4. After the shave, use a ALCOHOL FREE balm. Alcohol just dries out the skin. Those after shave splash is going to get your skin burned and irritated, like it did for you. Finally, I hope my little "story" and tips helped!

Very good video. Watched all of them. Kind of weird how it can be enjoyable to watch another man shave, but it is, you, Paul H, TSE etc. All doing a great job, kudos to the bunch of you. I have myself started doing DE safety shaving for about 1 month now, loving it. And soon I will be having way to many products but shouldn´t complain, it is still a cheap hobby :) Anyway, good work man. Hope life and work is going great for you.

Summing it up: There's definitely a difference between soaps and creams, especially evident with or without a good preshave. There's differences in facial hair and how each of us reacts to different blade types used. Some say they get great shaves no matter what soap, cream, blade, whatever and I don't doubt their sincerity. I'm just not one of them. Don't ever let someone else's opinions it observations cloud your own. There's differences and that's becoming clearer to me each time I watch your videos. Keep them coming! Thanks again!

For me I bought my first cream. I hated it lets so much iritation through. For me I have to use a shaving soap. The longer lather time is worth it to me. And your right every one's skin type is different. So every one needs different lather and blades.

Rough shave on top of another. Guess why. You used a FEATHER blade. I recommend a Rapira Swedish Supersteel. Just one notch down from a Feather blade as far as sharpness but a lot more smooth and forgiving. The razor, prep with the pre shave soap & Taylor of old bond street shaving cream were good choices. The blade not so much. Next time try a wet Alum block instead of a Styptic pencil. Much easier to get ALL the nicks, rash and irritation quickly. works much better for me, try it next time. After that kind of shave, do not use your typical aftershave lotion with alcohol and other nasty junk that makes your face burn. Try NIVEA for men Post shave Balm, either the Replenishing Post Shave Balm or my favorite, Extreme comfort post shave balm.

Agreed, Taylor usually has a higher amount of glycerine which will allow the blade to glide more. Change up your blade and you'll be happier.

Love these videos, dude. Try fewer passes though. One pass with the grain and one pass across the grain (since your skin doesn't like against the grain). You use quality goods so fewer passes could definitely help with the irritation. Especially with your beauty of a straight razor.

Props and sub for still posting this vid. I quit shaving and am about to try DE shaving because I constantly got painful folliculitis or cysts on my jaw line. Can you, or do you have a vid on avoiding these? Does an alum block do anything, should I be regularly using an aftershave with alcohol like you did after this unfortunate shave? Any tips please.

If I want a great shave, I use a pre shave (like proraso) to soothe my skin and hairs, then use Martin de Candre shave soap, followed by alum and aftershave balm (I love the baume.be balm) and when that has dried, some Penhaligon's talcum powder... Love the feel of my face after that :)

Revisiting this after Douglas Smythe posted a link on the How To Grow A Moustache Google+ channel. Just had a similar experience using a previously well-behaved shaving cream that always worked well for me, until not using the preshave soap and using a fresh Feather blade. I too got ingrown hairs, irritation, even nicks or 'weepers' as many call them, all over my neck! I got a new DE razor and really wanted the pricey Feather blades I have to work, never cared for them in a Weber I had but wanted them to work in an ATT. Being told I should use a quality shave cream to test this new ATT razor by the manufacturer, point-of-fact I was specifically told to use a cream like Prorasso but didn't own any. Tried keeping other variables out so I did a prewash and applied S. Maria cream directly. Feathers have always shaved sharp for me during the first pass but always became mean once the thicker stubble on my chin was shaved. Curious why I'd pulled out a Bausch & Lomb 20X Coddington loupe I used back when I was making and inspecting microelectronic components that went into the A-10 Warthog (also known as the 'Thunderbolt') fighter/bombers before and during the first 'Desert Storm', inspected the blade edge of a new Feather DE blade before shaving and directly after just one full pass. There it was, the evidence I'd been looking for as to why these Feather blades tore me up so badly! It wasn't that the Feather blade was do sharp, it's because the edge of a Feather blade is so thin that the thicker hairs along my chin were actually bending and nicking the edge of those blades like trying to cut through a coat hanger with a pair of sharp scissors! Sure Feather blades are sharp but that's not why they were tearing up my neck with irritation, burn, ingrown hairs and those nasty 'weepers'. They tore me up because the edges are too thin to hold up to the type of hair I was cutting. That's a FACT, not some fictitious remarks made by people saying they're scary-sharp, not some opinion by someone that can shave successfully with them probably due in large portion to they having finer facial hair that doesn't damage the blade edges. So if Feather blades are causing you grief, as they've always done me, you might be experiencing the same thing. Facial hair often differs from one person to another. It's no secret that people from different ethnic backgrounds have facial hair that varies drastically. My family tree comes from a mix of ethnic hair variations from thick Scottish wire hair to thin Native American and everything in between. Asians typically have extremely fine facial hair to it's of little surprise a blade made in Japan would work well for such hair types. That same blade, used against my hair-of-Scot, gets chewed into a real mess that's far worse than trying to shave with a serrated edge. Mystery solved! I have and can always gets fantastic shaves from vintage Gillette Blue blades, several good shaved as fact. They're much thicker than a Feather, the edges themselves are too. They're multi-ground along the edges and can be readily seen under light magnification. They start with a steep angled grind, followed by successively shallower grinds, they don't get rolled over nor chips in the blade edges I've found with Feather blades. Gillette Blue blades were designed by an American with very thick facial hair, designed and made for the average American of the day with similar facial hair. Is it any wonder why so many DE blade sharpeners were also made during the same time in history with this now in mind? If you're having 'issues' with or without using a preshave you might want to reexamine the blade you're using. Those that cannot benefit from preshave soaps or oils may also have finer facial hair than those finding major benefit from a preshave. If you're getting razor burn or rashes it may but be from the preshave, or may be due to the lack thereof simply because of the type of blade being used and the razor itself that the blade is in. After revisiting this video it's never been any clearer to me that this is more than a mere coincident. This is fact, clearer to me now than ever before realized. I do benefit from using RazoRock/HTGAM Mentholated Essential Oil of Lime preshave soap, big-time! I do have problems using Feather blades especially without the added protection a preshave provides against blade edge deterioration due to overly thin edged blades that wear out too quickly trying to mow through my thick facial hair. Don't let anyone tell you preshave doesn't make a difference. Maybe it won't for some but I'm not in that boat. I'm in the boat where my ancestors had heavy, thick beards and truly find benefit from using preshave and RazoRock/HTGAM preshave works wonders for me. Thanks again for this video. It wasn't only good the first time I've seen it, it's reinforcing what I've discovered since first watching it. I can't say that about a lot of online videos. This one and others you've made are ongoing for me. Thank you, again for taking the time to make them and for being honest!

Scott Campbell I've tried the Feather as well with my Welsh and German beard, and everything you're saying makes perfect sense to this engineer. The first pass = perfection. Passes 2&3 feel like I'm using an X-Acto knife, and my chin and neck take the punishment, even with a detailed beard mapping to guide me.

Hey Nick. Love your videos. Just wanted to know what your overall opinion is of feather blades? Personally they just don't seem to work for me, which is unfortunate because I love their sharpness but they are so unforgiving. I can get a great first pass but if I even try to go across the grain - immediate and severe razor burn. It's so frustrating because i can easily go directly against the grain in most areas with a wilkinson sword..btw I use a Muhle R89 twist. I want to like feathers but so far they have been really disappointing.

John Flynn They will work better in time as you technique improves. And trust me it continually improves for many years. Try very hard on all your passes to use only the weight of the razor to do the work. Be very gentle and use short strokes use just enough pressure to keep the razor on your shin when gravity is pulling it away such as upward strokes from neck up and over jawline and chin.

Great video Nick I have to say that I use the Proraso soaps and get great shave. Could if be that you didn't soak the soap before using it that is what I do before shaving? I usually fill the Proraso tub with some warm water and let it soak for 5to10min while shower and then empty to the tub and start lather my boar brush.

Hi Nick, you mentioned that you used a Feather blade for your shave here ? personally love all that shave lather but it wont save you from cuts using a feather. I have found that Polsilver Iridium or Personna's platinum work well as they are milder on the skin for me personally. The Feather platinum will give about 5 shaves whilst the Feather Super stainless is a dead loss at just 2 shaves with the 3rd being dreadful, as in cutting the skin and leaving the stubble untouched ! I just could not believe that, but notably in my tests they have 2 good points - no burn & no irritation after the shave. I pretty much watch all your vids so please keep em coming. Kind regards.

Please do a video on making a lather with shaving soaps and include problem solving tips and hints. I'd like to watch you start the lather in the puck without it getting sped up so I can judge the actual time needed in the first step. I just can't seem to get a good lather from soaps like I do from creams. I've only been doing this for about a month and it's driving me crazy. Seems so easy when you do it!!! My "lather" seems okay but after I apply to face and start shaving it quickly becomes dry/airy "foam" on my face and in my mixing bowl. I've tried adding more and more water but just don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've ordered some Synergy Shaving Soap - Gondolier (rose, jasmine, juniper, cedar) and can't wait for it to arrive. I'm current using Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream Bowl, 5.3-Ounce and it's okay but leaves a film on my razor. The soap I've tried to make work is Colonel Conk's world-famous glycerin shave soap. Thanks for making such great videos!

I'm having the same problem with Taylor of Old Bond Street Rose. The lather looks great, and it feels like its slick when I rub it between my fingers. However, like you said, it starts to get a too airy in the bowl and on my face.

Nick, soaps are indeed typically more slick than creams. Sometimes substantially more so. Remember: the sharper your edge, the more slick the lather that you need. Creams are actually - in basic form - soap with more water (ie: "pre-processed") so that they will be faster and easier to lather. But, you lose some of the soap glide in the process. BTW: Since the Proraso product did not let you get as close and consistent a shave, your whiskers started to become ingrown quickly. ANY soap or cream that does not allow for you to get a "proper" shave will contribute to bad after effects. BTW2: A straight razor shave will also help to reduce ingrowns etc!

The shaving soap in question is Taylor of Old Bond luxury shaving soap, and I just can't seem to get a consistent lather with the soap. Is it because I'm lathering my brush wrong? (It's my first time having done this), or is it just the soap?

Well, may not have been a great shave, but it was a great vid IMO. Being a noob, it's nice to see that even the best of 'em have their off shaves (has Geo ever had a weeper lol). For my first DE shave last week I had pre-existing irritation from my last cartridge shave, but couldn't wait to try my stuff anymore. Funny thing was, even though I had some weepers and burn, it was gone the next day. Before if I had irritation and shaved again with a cartridge it would just become a downward spiral until I'd have to skip a week. I used to not be able to shave more than once every 3 days, but now I've shaved every other day, and the results just keep getting better. Wish I wouldn't have waited so long to switch. One question though, can we still expect to see vids after the move! I'm guessing you're probably going to be run ragged with the new job (congrats btw).

Your videos are great! Just a suggestion... I used the D89 and found it takes way too much "work". It irritates my face because I have to keep doing so many passes. It's finicky with blades too. I just picked up a Gillette Slim Adjustable on eBay and put it up to 5 with a Voshkod and it was smooth sailing! I can adjust the razors aggressiveness to whatever I want based on my skin, blade and even my mood. If I'm just cleaning up after work for a date. (Ie single pass) i can turn it down. I can use almost any blade in it. This razor really is awesome! It's built well, heavy, TTO, non slip and looks nice on the counter. James Bond even used one!

I have recently started using shaving soaps again, but the one thing I've noticed is they do tend to dry my skin more and leave it feeling tighter, and not so much in a good way. I think with creams there is the opportunity for more emollients in the recipe because of the composition. I have fallen in love with C&E Nomad shaving soap; great lather (even with a badger brush), good slickness and the smell is INCREDIBLE, but it's drying out my face more even after using AS balm and a good quality lotion afterwards. Maybe I just need a longer break in period...I would really hate to give up on it. Gonna have to go back to cream for the next couple shaves to calm my face down I fear. Any recommendations? BTW, I love the DE89 and feather combo...that's some good shaving right there, and I have fairly sensitive skin. Keep the vids coming and happy shaving!

hi. i am 38 and have had a beard or perpetual stubble since i was 21 or so. i shaved my face for the first time in at least 5 years at the beginning of november and mucked it up so badly that shaved again. i haven't watched all of your videos (i plan to) but i have two questions for you: 1. while the skin on my neck was not initially irritated, after a day or two it was on fire... as if the hairs were breaking the surface of my skin. is this delayed razor burn? i looked closely and didn't see anything that resembled ingrown hairs, but could it be that? what did i do wrong? 2. how do you shave "near" your lips without shaving your lips? is there a trick that no one ever taught me? (actually, i taught myself how to shave long before youtube so there are probably a lot of little tricks i don't know.) note: i went out and bought a gillette fusion proglide w/ flexball as it seemed to be the most popular. thank you for the videos.

Robert Marriott Well... I had the same problem with my skin... You gotta shave at least every other day and let your skin break in ! Start shaving with the grain... then when you get more comfortable with your shaves go against the grain ! And remember, don't put any pressure on your face when using a razor... Just enough pressure for the razor to sit on your face ! Also remember to always shave in a direction perpandicular to the blades ! With single blades, try to maintain a 30° angle... But don't worry much about that... You'll get used to it sooner than you realize ! If you are using that Gillette cartige razor, then well... This one is too easy ! Except for the lips I guess... I had the same problem until I figured out that I was putting the razor at a weird angle against my moustache area, instead I should keep it laying flat on the skin ! I also used to use a lot of pressure on the skin which I shouldn't really do... Good luck man ! I hope I helped you... And if I didn't, well I hope my comment helps someone in the future... who knows ! :)
