No matter what your opinion of him, Tharoor comes across as a super bright, compassionate and honest individual. There is still hope, he could lead India back to decency and tolerance some day. Terrific podcast debut Barkha.. looking forward to more!

In politics there is a lot of compromise that has to be made. So even if one has good intentions the compromise and compulsions of practical decision making as a leader supersedes everything. Shashi is a nice man but not cut for the top job

Shashi Tharoor's clear conscience, his humanity, his discipline have held him in good stead during that time of torment when his political opponents didn't spare any effort to harass him day in and day out for a very long period.

Tharoor is a goddamn credit to Indian politics and political discourse. What a dignified man. Show ended with a rather grim note with the thought of Tharoor leaving politics. I would be okay with it only if his next career leap is commentating on test matches.

Its really well said when #ST said you need to have your own regrets which comes only if you think and DO try things in your life. Most of us just breath. Living is something more than that. Great to have this podcast. Loved the way #BD apologized for last two question. Very sweet n cute to accept her temptation.

Yes as mentioned it is such a pleasure listening to Shashi Tharoor, the way he communicates and narrates. But I obsolutely love Barkha Dutt in how she moderates and interviews in the highest standard with with fairness, simplicity and accuracy so as to make everybody understand as a journalist. My highest appreciation and admiration to both Shashi and Barkha.

Tharoor is the most practical individual we have in public service. No cliches, no bs - the guy speaks like anyone we know in our daily lives (no reference to his vocabulary). How the Congress sidestepped him for leadership is beyond logic.

A smooth and open conversation!! Well done Barkha. The student in US whose passport was impounded was Prof Anand Kumar. The Amb was BKN.

In politics, the best doesn't always win. However, I wish to see him as the prime minister of India someday.

That’s true humility and Dan Tharoor my first boss at RD would have been proud with it. 👍This man deserves a second chance in public life in an official capacity as a minister - maybe in education - would do the right thing by young people.

A habit we definitely need to develop a looooooot ! 🤓It's very interesting how he chose the particular word 'Read', it's the first word of revelation that descended upon the Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him from God. For a person who truly knows how to read correctly, will know how to think correctly, and will not develop the herd mentality.

I copied this passage from a BBC news article and am pasting it below, as for once, it seems to better Tharoor's expression when he talks about coping with the sad Sunanda incident "Defeat is often attended by a kind of self-conscious dignity that is," as Wolfgang Schivelbusch wrote in “The Culture of Defeat,” “as inaccessible to the victor … as the kingdom of heaven is to the rich man.” The result can be a sense of moral superiority, often attended by a process of purification.

It’s very easy to hate Dr Shashi Tharoor and the answer is very simple-apart from his good looks even at this age why is he so brilliant in every field of knowledge? Why does he speak such good English -has unimaginable vocabulary many which even the English speaking people have to look up in the Dictionary for the meaning? He even speaks Bangla so sweetly which even the Bengali speaking people cannot. Why does he write so well, speak so well, never gets angry, is so extremely polite-has all the qualities of a great gentleman which is very rare in these days? Why is he so forgiving, so unbelievably courteous, respectful, well behaved? Nothing and no one can make him angry not even his adversaries. Why is he such a great scholar, a famous author? So naturally if I do not have these qualities I will try to malign and belittle him in any way possible. But at the end of the day nobody can keep the sun from shining, not even the darkest of clouds or the night sky. And that morning sun - Dr Tharoor -will very soon shine in his true light 🙏🙏🙏🌕🌕🌕

Mr. Tharoor, you mentioned about being able to divorce your first wife, and seemed to be alluding to your Western influence for the same. People have their own reasons to divorce or stay married, I wouldn't comment on that, because everyone's situation is different. But you seemed to look down upon the low divorce rate in India. In general, I believe a low divorce rate has the advantage of India having a lower rate of loneliness unlike in the west, a more resolve to make the marriage work unlike in the west. I grew up watching reruns of Bandini on Doordarshan, and some movies where the wife stays in the marriage even when the husband treats her badly. There is this concept of pati parmeshwar, and my wife says these days why not patni parmeshwar to which I say why not. Because, if you think of it, at the root of it, the minute one says parmeshwar, one brings in a divinity to the relationship. After that, it does not matter if it is pati or patni as the parmeshwar. So, there are positive aspects of the low divorce rate in India. After all, what are the marriage vows.. in sickness and in health, in good times and bad times. They are very similar in the East and the West. I believe the Indians are keeping their marriage vows more than the Westerners. Anyway, always fascinating to listen to you. Keep up the good work. And thank you too Barkha ji/ma'am.

The problem with the intelligent leaders like Shashi Tharoor is that they are brought up and are easily swayed by western secular values. Nations led by these intellectuals lose contact with the real world of people. Lebanon got carried away by secular human values and lost its roots, Its culture and identity from a tolerant westernised nation to a conservative Muslim nation. This changed the day Muslims had majority. You give an inch and you will lose it all. Your identity, culture and beliefs are flexible but those who will benefit from these; have their beliefs cast in concrete and they are stuck with the words of their God. Given less than half a chance, they will impose their beliefs.. When they will come to power, you will not have any room for fine debates and intellectual niceness. The west is already discovering this where Halal, head scarfs, love jehad and honour killings have been imposed by a relatively small Muslim population. The tragedy is, citizens from the Muslim nations escape to free western nations and in few years revert back and want to thrive in male dominated comfort of their medieval beliefs. Indian liberal secularists are blind to this and therein lie our fault lines which can perish our identity.
