this technique is spot on! I sharpened my F1 in a wrong way, it became a bit dull. After watching this video it was back in business after about 5 minutes. I didn't use the gerber thingy, just stropped it with a leather belt afterwards, good video!

Great video, thanks for sharing your tips. Coming from Australia, the only thing that disturbed me was the proximity of the fire to the leaves. We would have had a bush fire on our hands :)

thanks for this video. i've been struggling to get my F1 sharp with traditional fixed angle methods. this worked a treat with the convex curve on the blade

This way would be good for a V.edge but on convex bade only works in the short run. When you sharpen a convex blade you need to sharpen the whole of it, not only the edge. This keeps the propotions of the blade geometry just fine. If you sharpen just the edge, it gets thicker and thicker till it becomes impossible to put a decent edge on it.

Thanks for the comment Umberto but if you watch and listen to the video properly you will hear me say about the rocking with the dc4 thus taking an even amount of metal off the convex edge.

It does mate yes, I think some people have changed it to a skandi but it originally comes with a convex.

@kkwZero. Wet-dry sandpaper is cleaner, but this works as well. Think about it for a second. How do you sharpen a convex axe head. With a stone in circular motions keeping a keen eye on the blade angle.

Hi Duane, I have watched the vid and read the comments. The knife is sharp for sure and your understanding is sound. This method of sharpening a convex is fine for in the field. However to properly sharpen a convex it's best to use emery with a soft backing like a mouse mat. That way the whole convex gets licked, if that makes sense. You will not damage that knife very easily. It is very hard. The neg comment was rude arrogant not helpful. If you did damage it, it can be fixed easily. Sandy

is this method for convex edge or will it work for scandi grind and other grinds?

Thanks shannonandsheila1 Virtuovice shows pretty much the same tequenique using full size sharpening stones. Watching his videos I think he needs to use smaller circular strokes and use all of the stones surface. That way he won't get so much uneven wear on his stones.

This method would work for scandi grind, BUT you would have to have a very steady hand to hold the stone flat on the blade. There are better/easier ways of sharpening a Scandi. Check out Ray Mears knife sharpening videos he does some really good ones.
