How’d it go?
New subscriber here. I have the Fiskars, Great States and the Earthwise reel mowers. I have modified all of them starting with the Fiskars in Spring of 2019. They all have their strong points and some weaknesses. I love the Earthwise for convenience and light weight and how well it cuts. I had made it my daily mower when mowing at 1/2 - 3/4" on my KBG. Use my Allett on the weekend for striping. Great job on the how to video.

Welcome aboard! I love my Earthwise. It weighs nothing and is super quiet. You’ve got a collection. I don’t even know how I would decide to mow with. This was my first time sharpening it and it worked great. I just went for it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Cool . My wife bought a decent reel mower but cut half lawn sits sat in the basement . I have ten power mowers and riders that I tinker with. I’m very interested in using this reel mower for the front lawn .

I say go for it! It is something different. It is very satisfying to be the power source for the mechanical action. You’d just have to mow more consistently to avoid taking too much at once. In my experience, reels don’t like taking a lot of grass if a blade.
Cool video. I had no idea.

@@Uncle_Fester24 I have had zero issues towing the cart behind the Ariens! It’s super simple to pull by hand as well. Yep I do wish it had a hill brake, but you learn quickly how to get it to hold still on a slope. Super stable. I do not regret replacing wheelbarrow ever for it. You’ll be happy you did! Thanks for watching!
I need to talk to you about my Reel Mower. Also at the end you stated you should have worn safety glasses.
What’s a good grease to buy for when reinstalling the wheels?
Nice, I am about to sharpen myself, do you think a half inch drill can do the job?

Okay so I’m a total noob to reel mowing and earth wise 16 is what I’m learning on. Are you suppose to adjust it to where it freely spins as good as yours is? I have mine adjusted slightly tighter where you kinda had it when sharpening. Not that tight, but tight enough it makes a distinctive noise of the blades rubbing the cutter. It’s definitely not a silent operation while cutting, and I’m curious if I have mine too tight. It cuts good, but I also have no idea how it’s technically suppose to be
@theSuburbiaDad
Жыл бұрын
I’d say adjust it to where it spins freely, but as close to the bed knife is humanly possible. If it sounds like metal grinding on metal or is not a breeze to push, adjust. It will cut great and be more enjoy. Plus, if it is silent, you can mow anytime you want. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching.
Did I miss it in the reassemble? Did you loosen the bed knife, returning it to its original position?
@theSuburbiaDad
2 жыл бұрын
Nope. I left it where it was after sharpening. After the process, it was spinning like butter where it was. I’m sure you can adjust it if you want, but mine was perfect! Thanks for watching!
Noticed you attach a grass catcher at the end. Did that come with yours? If it was ordered, will you please add the link?
@theSuburbiaDad

how do you adjust the sharpening bar. part where the blade hits to sharpen
@theSuburbiaDad

There are two bolts in either side on the top side - front and back right; front and back left. Adjust slowly, it doesn’t take much for a big change. Thanks for watching!
I have one of these and i am teying to figure out a way to get it to cut at 1/4". Thinking about drilling another hole for the wheels which should alow it to drop a bit more. Any thoughts?

It might work. I am not sure though. It does sound like a possible move. I will say, you better have super smooth ground that low. I assume you do or will plan for it. Keep me posted and thanks for watching!
I'm planning purchasing this mower soon, and wanted to know how easy is it to set height 1/2 " inch?

Super simple. It doesn’t take long at all!
could you share the attachments used to make the drill to reel connection
@theSuburbiaDad

Hi! Thanks for commenting. I didn’t use any attachments. Just a drill with a 1/2 chuck. I then tightened that directly to the axle. Hope that helps!
Wat kind of compound u put on the blade before u do the drill spin an how long do I spin it
@theSuburbiaDad

Hi! Here is the kit I used… amzn.to/3PASkDX As for time, basically until it sounds like it is spinning smooth. You can hear it the difference. Hope this helps!
After adjusting the height on my Earthwise it clunks more now? I never took the C clips off like an idiot or maybe their called E clips im not sure. Any ideas why? Both wheels spin the blades so the gears should be in the right spot. Also there is play on the wheel guard casing thing. It seems like it should be flush but it moves around a little. Is that normal?
@theSuburbiaDad
2 ай бұрын
It sound like, maybe, the reel is too close to the bed knife. Adjust the screws on either side until it spins freely with as little gap as possible between the knife and reel. That’s my best guess. When I’ve had clunk sounds that was why. Hope this helps!
How did you rig the stripper kit?

What's actually doing the sharpening?? The compound or the bed knife?
@theSuburbiaDad
Жыл бұрын
The friction of the compound to bed knife. The compound is like a sand gel mix. As it spins it recreates an edge.
What is the product name of the sanding compound you used? I'd like to get some myself, but my local hardware stores had no idea what I was talking about when I went in and asked.

What kind of attachment do I need on my drill to attach to the mower to spin the blades??

My power drill chuck is not wide enough to fit the bolt, is there an adapter to put on my drill so that it would fit?
@theSuburbiaDad
Жыл бұрын
I am not sure. You need a 1/2 chuck if I recall correct. The drill doesn’t have to be fancy. I like corded for this, plus they are cheaper. Another option, I think you can buy a hand tool that will let you manually spin it to backlap it.
Great job but you need to wear safety gear.
How often do you find yourself sharpening the blades on the earthwise?
@theSuburbiaDad

If the turf looks like it isn’t being cut or the grass blades look like they are being just ripped, it’s time. I don’t have a huge area I use it on, therefore rarely. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching.

Scared the heck out of me how you're spinning the reel so fast with your fingers. Ideally, the reel and bedknife should be sharp enough to cut paper even when turning slowly, like scissors.
