A fantastic series of shows. I have the entire series and watch it right through every couple of years and thoroughly enjoy it. Like sharp, I was commissioned form the ranks and know what it’s like not being accepted by the officers or trusted by the troops. It took a lot of he’s work to prove myself in both sides of the fence, but I made it and like sharp, eventually made it to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He has been something of an inspiration over the years.

As an Amerocan who loves this show I'd describe this show as a Newer colorized Combat! Based in The Napoleonic Era. If you've ever seen Combat! You'll know that even with a lower budget it was a high success due to superb writing and acting.

MANIKOS: Shame about the TV series which completely bastardized the books. I've rarely seen such a mish-mash of a series compared to the books and the people responsible for whatever reason for destroying the excellent Sharpe series should be kept well away from any future series by any author ever again.

@Matthew Shrubsole The reason Bernard Cornwell worked on the scripts was that he probably got very well paid for it and it was in his contract, however, to be fair, he said he did like Sean as Sharpe. But my criticism still stands as they entirely wiped out all of the India stories and just adapted them to France. I recommend this critic's version of why he used to love the TV series until he read the books and then he rapidly changed his mind. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nKOctNKvk6jTgcY.html

@Matthew Shrubsole I'm sorry you're so ignorant of reality. Tons of authors have "sold out" and most have been well paid for it, not all, but most. The TV series you love is a travesty of the books and I honestly wish Bernard Cornwell the best of luck and I sincerely hope he keeps writing more of ALL his books. Just because you decide to misinterpret what I said and really decided to get offended on Bernard Cornwell's behalf doesn't make your point/insult valid. I believe there's only been two TV shows I've ever watched where the productions were nearly word for word and scene for scene to the author's. And that's a very rare thing. If the books are so fantastic and worth making a TV series of them, why bastardize them so badly? The Hornblower series is another one which was another mish mash of an excellent series of book. All fine actors and they really were on ships, but the books were horribly mangled.

No question this series wouldn't have been the same if Sean Bean hadn't stepped into the lead for Paul McGann. McGann looks more like the character in the book, but Sean Bean's appeal is the heart of this series. Wouldn't have been as good without him as the leading man.

Apart from Sean Bean, my favorite character is Sgt. Harper simply because actor Daragh O'Malley does have a great understanding of the character. Harper is a bit of a "nursemaid". He does a good job of hiding that aspect, but he deeply cares about Sharpe and the Chosen Men. While acting gruff, its the subtle things he does that show his nature. He also does a great job portraying the way Harper's fee!ing change towards Sharpe in the series. He goes from one of his biggest detractors and openly hostle to Sharpe to becoming his best friend, confidant, bodygaurd and nursemaid.

While I enjoyed the Sharpe series, it always bothered me that there was NEVER an adequate number of extras to give the feel of full-scale battles -- 'battalions' and 'regiments' of no more than 50-100 men. In all of the Waterloo battle, there was probably a total of 100 men, wearing different uniforms in different shots. I know they did the best they could with the numbers they had, but would it have killed the budget to hire a few hundred extras for a day or two?

I think TV was just different back then, you didn't have the movie level burgers you get now for Netflix and HBO shows. Star Trek the next generation was the most expensive show filmed in the 1990s, looking at it now the sets, costumes and makeup look pretty solid but that's it. In Sharpe I think the idea of a small group of skirmishers works because it's closer to how modern combat is. Some of the sieges are bigger scale but the advantage of a small group is you can delve more into their characters.

well the war ended at Waterloo. The later movies set in India was inspired by the book that takes lace when Sharpe served in India as a Private and sergeant. before getting back to europe and becoming an officer. And Bean is getting older, so any new movie would have to be set in the 1820ties or later...

I watch all historical films. Gods and generals about the american civil war showed unrealistic history...sparkling clean uniforms fresh off the press and reproductions for swords and militaria was about as boring as you can get. Coupled with the comfort of camp life and No sickness or pain made it a boring movie..gettysburg on the other hand was a little better using Don Troiani as adviser. Sharpes films have many actuall antique weapons mixed in with quite accurate militaria reproductions....Maybe not everybody looks for these things but I do and it brings it all to life....for me

Yea, I was expecting the hair-raising shock of the opening of 'Glory' with it's pretty accurate depiction of how horrific Civil War combat was. 'Gettysburg' was okay as it had some really good moments that salvaged the rest. The uniforms were sparkling clean and another thing was the immaculate regimental flags which after 2 years of war would have had holes and many times were nothing more than shreds. In 'Gods and Generals' there was a little joke that was completely unnecessary-it was when the Confederates were attacking a Union camp and a box labeled 'chili powder' exploded. I wholly agree-very little blood, neat uniforms, little dirt, no incessant coughing. I'm reading 'Gangrene and Glory' right now and I was surprised to find out typhus (caused by body lice) was relatively unknown during the Civil War. The soldiers washed at least once a week with soap, especially during the summer so lice wasn't as big a problem as I expected it to be. The 'Sharpe' series did very well with cut, patched, faded and dusty uniforms.

I love Sharpe, watched the series at least 3 times over. I don't down on it for this reason, but all the sword fighting and battle scenes are choreographed so terribly.
