Sharp Pebble Whetstone Sharpening Kit - Review

We don't do many Amazon product reviews anymore. This was a great challenge. Sharp Pebble reached out to us. The challenge was to use the product in a video and we said that we were gonna go one step further. We did a full product review. You see the mistakes as well as some improvements that could be made. Were they successful? Were we successful? Find out. This was a fun adventure. $35.99 is very inexpensive. It's a very good way to get started. Watch our videos if you want to learn more about knife sharpening. This is not a knife sharpening tutorial. We put it to the test. Find out the results. Listed below is a link to the product.

I clicked on this video to see how to use the stone. Ten minutes into it he's still blabbing and hasn't gotten to sharpening. A 30 minute video on how to use the sharpening stone? I gave up and gave it a down vote.

First off, I'm not impressed! I would suggest that before doing any video on a new product you first watch the manufactures video on how to use the product and then produce your video. You then at least can produce a video that is competent, instructional and can give a quality assessment. So far this is worse than the blind leading the blind. And then the worst thing after your watch the instructional video and realize how to use the sharpener, you turn around take the stone out of the cradle and use the stone on your counter. Not at all testing the complete sharpening system. Even more unimpressed! And then you say "we used your system" NO YOU DID'NT.

This kind of synthetic whetstone is all around the internet, sold by various online retailers under lots of different names, but all most likely made in the same factory. 1000/6000 is a weird combination, 1000/3000 (also avilable) would make more sense since the "jump" is not as big. These whetstones are usually not expensive and a great way to start to learn free-hand sharpening. Got good results on my kitchen knives as well as PM-steel folders after some practise.

All those cheap stones are scam, nothing beats king 1k/6k combo.

I actually learned on a similar cheap stone like that which I got off of Amazon. It worked, wasn’t pretty, dished a lot but it did teach me much.

No offense to the company. The system is really poorly designed. I learned to sharpen just 2 years ago on a wetstone from KZread videos. Nothing about that system seems helpful and is seemingly making it harder because of the base and restriction to the full stone. Always great videos. Cheers

Those knife guides are a poor design. If you true the stones periodically the degrees will be changing as the stone thins out unless you take the time to calculate the exact depth of that stone in the holder and shim it as it wears. So weird...

I need to hone on a 8000 Shapton ceramic to get the skritch scratch aluminum oxide grit sounds out of my head!

Seeing you struggle with the angle guides had me laughing good for a little while 🤣 I don't prefer to sharpen like that either, but I can see it being useful for people just learning. I heard these Pebble stones dish like nobody's business. Keep up the great videos.

Thanks for the evaluation! I have had this stone for a bit over two years. I am a NOVICE so I haven't used it much yet, but it is good to hear that it is a great place to start learning. Don't want to dump a bunch of money into this before I have a few basic skills, that I hope to learn from you. Please keep posting!

I saw you mention in another video that you have a Tormek. I am looking forward to seeing it in action. I have a cheap knock-off Scheppach and it is great. It gives such a beautiful accurate edge.

Seems like a reasonable gizmo if your just starting out. I like the angle guide idea, but don't like the large knife hitting the end of the block.😔

It looks identical to the Worksharp whetstone, same plastic base and size, just different color.

You said "edge leading strokes up to 8000". Does that mean past 8000 I should be using edge trailing strokes?
